General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Darmok Is A Great Baby-sitter
« on: February 25, 2006, 01:15:26 pm »
My niece had to go on an unexpected trip to Fla. yesterday, and asked me to puppy-sit her teeny-tiny little 4 mo. old Rat Terrier pup, Toby till she gets back on Wednesday.  Well, I already have an 8 mo. old Rattie, so I said ok.  Took the 2 pups and Dar to the ballpark this morning (temp was 24 degrees, but sunny--not so bad!) and she proved to be such a great baby-sitter! She watched over the two of them, and played with them, even. She laid down on her belly to play with them so she wouldnt hurt them! She is the best dog, I swear! Toby was amazed at such a Giant!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New Collar
« on: February 11, 2006, 12:12:20 pm »
I'm such a sucker for dog collars, leashes, bandanas, etc!  We went to a new pet shop yesterday, and I saw this beautiful collar that was very heavy-duty and beautiful at the same time.  Heavy black plastic quick-snap, heavy-duty black steel d-ring, and it was a smooth, shiny webbing with a flag design!  (HAD to have it!)  But the price was $12, and I really didnt want to spend that much, cos I already have about 20 different collars at home! I was telling my wife "naaah, I think I'll pass on it, cos I dont want to pay that much" and the store owner was right behind me when I said that.  He came over and asked "what's the price on it?"  I told him and he said "you can have it for $5 if you want it".  COOL! I couldnt refuse that!  But before I got out of there, I ended up buying so many treats, toys, and other stuff that it cost me $42.50 to get out the door~! Big savings, huh?  ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Rally To Rescue
« on: January 27, 2006, 09:40:46 pm »
I found the greatest thing  tonight at the farm supply store here locally.  It's a set of 2 collars, One for your dog, and one matching  miniature dog-collar style bracelet for YOU to wear!  They are reflective safety collars, and they are made by Purina.  Proceeds of these collar sales go to Purina's cause called 'Rally to Rescue' and it is a fund to help pay for dog food, supplies. and financial help for shelter dogs. What a great win~win situation! My dogs get reflective collars to wear so if we are out walking and it gets dark on us, the collars shine in very low light, I get a nifty little dog-collar bracelet that matches the dogs', and Purina donates money to help shelter dogs!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dogs In The News
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:11:54 am »
This is a pretty cool story that happened the other day just up the road from my house! The dogs were old lab-mix dogs, but they were really on the ball! Kind of nice to see a GOOD story about big dogs in the news these days!

Deputy: Dogs Helped Save Diabetic Master's Life

POSTED: 7:37 pm EST January 17, 2006

CENTERTON, Ind. -- A sheriff's deputy who found a diabetic man who had collapsed in a cornfield says the man's dogs are a major reason why he survived.

Morgan County sheriff's Deputy Steve Hoffman said he had just finished with a traffic stop on a rural road in Centerton on a recent night when he noticed something odd coming from a cornfield.

"I noticed what appeared to be an illumination or a light that was flickering and facing my direction," Hoffman told RTV6's Ben Morriston.

Hoffman said he went toward the light, where he found an unconscious Bill Burns and Burns' two dogs. The light was coming from a flashlight, which one of the dogs was holding in its mouth.

The other dog was lying on Burns as if to keep him warm, Hoffman said.

Hoffman said he saw on Burns a bracelet that indicated he was a diabetic. Burns was taken to a hospital, where he spent four days before being released.

Burns had been walking with the dogs when he collapsed. He said he doesn't remember the ordeal, but he believes that Hoffman seeing Burns' flashlight in the mouth of one of the dogs is remarkable.

"It's got to be just fate or faith, one or the other," Burns said.

Hoffman said the dogs "definitely are the heroes in the story."

"Had he not had the dogs with him that evening, I think the outcome would have been a lot worse," Hoffman said.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Cousin Eva
« on: January 04, 2006, 01:57:51 am »
Darmok and Sasha got to play with their "cousin" Eva tonight.  Eva is my brother in law's GSD, and they came for a visit.  Sasha enjoyed Eva's company, but Dar preferred the 'silent' dog!

Doberman Pictures / Another silly video
« on: December 30, 2005, 07:50:38 pm »
I'm just having too much fun with this Kodak Easyshare!! I had to put this one on, but I promise I wont film every time she farts or anything like that!  Dar used to grab my socks in her mouth when she was 2 - 3 months old and I had to chase her all over the house for them so I could get ready to go to work. Since it seemed a 'natural' thing for her to do, we just built on that little quirk of hers, and heres the result:

Doberman Pictures / Video of Darmok
« on: December 30, 2005, 11:49:40 am »
This is my first attempt at copying video.  It's a quick one! My Darmok does so many things that I tell people about and they go "yeah, right..." so I thought I'd show how she gets me the telephone when I ask her to.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Squirrel Hunting
« on: December 17, 2005, 01:58:53 pm »
Bought a new camera (thanks, all my BPO buddies for input on this--I actually convinced the salesman that I knew what I was talking about!!heh heh ;D)
So anyway, here's my first attempt at shoting, and posting all in the same day, so I used Darmok in her new 'Squirrel Hunter's' coat that I made for her.  She STILL has a hard time telling the difference in a squirrel and a cat!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Nothing to do With dogs:
« on: December 12, 2005, 08:50:31 am »
Hey you guys, I'm on a mission to buy a digital camera this week, and I know absolutely NOTHING about them! (yeah, I'm a duhhh  ???) I hate to ask the sales guy at a camera store, cos they will do a big pitch on the most expensive ones, when maybe a lesser one will do all I need it to do. Was at Wal Mart last night, and they have some on sale, but didnt want to ask the guy working in that department any technical questions, cos he probably just got shoved over in the camera dept from toys or something and knows about as much as ME! What should I look for, or beware of when looking to buy?  All I need is something with a good viewscreen that doesnt take forever for the shutter to close so the pics arent blurry. Can ya help a guy out????

Doberman Discussions / My "Watch Dog"
« on: December 11, 2005, 10:43:41 am »
My wife swears that Darmok can tell time!! I live close enough to my job that I go home at noon to walk the dogs, play with them, etc. for almost an hour, and then go straight home at 4 pm before I go anywhere else.  If for some reason I 'm late at noon, or am late by even 5 minutes at 4 pm, Darmok will wail and howl and pace till I get there! It drives everyone in the house crazy---but it lets me know how much my doggie loves me  :)
