We had so much fun on Sunday! Craig got to play in some snow.
He was a bit camera shy.  :D

Meet & Greet BPOers / Any BPOers in Oceanside? Craig needs a playmate!
« on: January 16, 2009, 11:36:12 am »
We're looking for a large/giant breed friend for Craig that doesn't mind letting it all out when he/she plays.
He's not a giant...26" and 90-95lbs, but he likes to run, chase and wrestle without holding back. We usually have to leave the dogpark because he tends to offend and scare dogs that are smaller(so far mostly pit bulls). I feel badly for Craig because he can't take a hint and ends up being "annoying". He tends to gravitate toward boxers, rottweilers, rhodesians...t ougher breeds that can wrestle.
Today he almost got into a fight with a pit who was guarding his owner and I'm afraid we won't be able to go to our park anymore. :-\
Not sure what I can do for him.
So anyway...North County? Anyone?

Mixed Breed Discussion / Has anyone tried DNA testing their dog?

Just curious.
If you have were you surprised or were the breeds in line with your opinion?

Hey all! I haven't been on BPO in a couple years, and I have a new friend I'd like everyone to meet. This is Craig! Mr. Craig was sprung from the Humane Society 3 weeks ago today. Poor guy had been locked up for over 3 months because he was deemed "too old, and too big"(I live in chihuahua-land).
I do believe I got the best doggie in the whole shelter! Craig is loveable, very gentle and kind-hearted.
He comes to work with me at the gallery and has become a tour guide for all the visitors.
And for some reason I can't post pics so all I have for now is the avatar photo.
Also, I cannot figure out how to make a profile for Craig...and registration isn't working. Help!

Started about two weeks ago. She is scratching the right side of her face to the point where her lips are swollen and scabbing  :(
After ruling out fleas I suspect it might just be her dirty nails that are irritating and causing her to scratch more.
Is there anything I can put on her face and lip area to disinfect and soothe? Is peroxide ok?
I feel so badly for her.
Thanks
Meredith

I am writing on behalf of a friend who is trying desperately to find housing in san diego. She has a well behaved, 6 year old rottweiler and has been repeatedly turned down by landlords because of Nikka's size and breed. I understand there are incidents with rottweiers(like any breed) but if she doesn't find housing soon she will have to go back to Colorado. Anyone have any suggestions of places to live or ways around people's stereotyping?

Anything Non-Dog Related / a bird is in my store...what do I do?
« on: June 06, 2006, 04:11:13 pm »
I feel dumb right now for asking this but a bird walked in my store and freaked out and I don't know how to help it leave. It's flown into four windows and is now perched on one of the gallery pieces near the ceiling. I feel so bad for it....it's terrified. Anyone deal with this before? If he/she is within reach is it okay to pick it up and put it outside or should I let it find its own way. I don't want to make things worse. Oh great it just pooped on my floor  :P

I don't think I've posted for a month or so....internet slow and I have no patience to wait.  :)

But we made it! Lucas n Daisy will be a year old on the 10th. Hopefully in the next couple weeks we'll get REAL internet and I can post some updated pics.

How is everyone's day today?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / severe aggression in puppy
« on: April 07, 2006, 03:51:31 pm »
I posted earlier about my friend who got a dog from the shelter who has severe aggression/ jealousy issues.
She needs to make a decision based upon whether this dog can or cannot be rehabilitated which could mean putting it down....so I am reposting as I have no solid advice to give her.  :-\
Hannah is 7 months old and a very sweet, playful dog. She listens when called, retrieves, loves to play with my dogs and seems like the perfect family pet. As soon as her owner comes around there is a hair trigger reaction to protect her(or for anyone she's close to, a warning to stay the h*ll away), and she starts raging...the best way I can descibe it. Hannah attacked Lucas, and then went for Chip. She's gone after my friend's mom, and has bitten my friend as well, leaving a nasty bruise...which isn't very protective.  ???
Has anyone had problems with this kind of aggression? My friend is very attached to her and heartbroken, and wants to know what she can do-if anything, to work with Hannah on this.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Can dogs catch colds?
« on: April 05, 2006, 10:57:33 pm »
Since this morning Daisy has been snorting and huffing....bes t way I can describe it lol. At first we thought it was cause she was in hyper-mode, but I think it may actually be congestion of some sort. Is this normal? I can't remember her doing this before. Is there something I can do for her?

I just got off the phone with a friend who two weeks ago got a 7 month old retriever mix from the local pound. Unfortunately my friend is the sort that only sees cuteness and not the time and work that goes into raising a puppy. She is now feeling very inconvenienced(grrr) and wants to take her back to the pound. This will be the third time in a month that it's returned...and my guess is the last. I told her to bring the puppy to my house tonight so I can meet her. I want to see whether the dog is really a lost cause or just needs special TLC. So far all my friend's complaints with the dog seem like normal puppy behavior ie..chewing up shoes, crates, toys etc. She sounds just like my sweet Daisy! She's also shocked at how much money she has to spend. AAAAAGH! I'm trying not to get upset with her but I feel like she's being unreasonable.

Okay so my point is...if the puppy comes over with kennel cough are my dogs going to get sick? I can't remember if they got immunized for this(they've had all their shots). I want her to meet them and see if she gets along well.

Secondly...doe s anyone have advice on how I can get this dog a second chance? I am off the next two days and told her I'd keep her to see if I can work with her. She could be socialized a little more, and who knows, we may just adopt her ourselves. I DO NOT want this dog going back to the pound!

ANY advice would be strongly appreciated.

This actually happened a few weeks ago and I forgot to post about it. I had taken the pups to dog beach and was trying to keep an eye on them while also looking up at the road for my cousin who was meeting me there. I looked back and noticed both dogs had joined up with a german shepherd, and were frantically barking. It was low tide and they were pretty far out so it took me a second to notice that they were barking at a gigantic seal!! I mean it was huge  :o
and of course I panicked, along with all the other dog owners(most grabbed their dogs and pulled them away from shore). I felt totally helpless, and was screaming at them to come in, and since they're the most well behaved dogs...haha just kidding.  ;) They ignored me and kept on barking. The seal(sea lion?) towered over all the dogs and evidentally was docile because Lucas and Daisy kept taking turns who could get the closest to it(then run away like a CHICKEN).  ::)
After about five minutes it turned around and waddled back into the ocean, and the dogs came trotting back to me all PROUD that they scared off the enemy....lol.

Oh how I wish I had brought my camera.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Just wondering....

Are huskies the only breed that "talk"?

14
Ok so I turned 30 this past week(thank you to all who wished me well....I needed it  :P) and my ever present job limbo is getting old. I've been in my current career(artsy retail related) for 10 years and am sick of it...not going anywhere and not caring anymore. I've been scouring want ads for months and the only thing I am interested in is working with animals. I know there are many fields in this catagory, many require schooling which I have none but am willing to go through. So my question is, those of you who work with animals, what do you do? What does it entail(tail...get it? ::)) any suggestions as to where I should look...don't see many ads online so far.
I was thinking about volunteering to start.
