Newfoundland Pictures / New Web Site
« on: September 20, 2006, 02:34:40 am »
I think my youngest daughter was a bit bored during the school summer holidays, she is nearly 13.... So she made me a web site!!

I am not sure how to do a link to it... But I will have a go ;).

Newfoundland Pictures / They Can Swim!
« on: August 11, 2006, 05:34:07 am »
A couple of weeks ago, here in the UK, it was the Ragley Water Trials. As you know, my lot have never been too fond of swimming, even though we are members of a working group! So we didn't bother to entre them in anything.

But there was a part of the lake set aside to cool the dogs off, as it has been unusually hot over here! Guess what? All three of mine decided they loved water, so much so that I nearly got dragged in by Kitten when I was holding him back!!! Are dogs awkward or what ::)

Here are some photos of my lot with either the mad husband (Martin) or our youngest Nikki. Molly "rescued" both of them like she had been doing it all her life, when in fact this was the first time she had ever done it!!

I have also attached some photos of the dogs paw prints that we did in cement in the garden, as I meant to add them to the other thread I did!! ;)

Newfoundland Pictures / Some New Photos of My Lot!
« on: August 11, 2006, 05:19:01 am »
I know how much we all love photos, so I thought I would put some on that I have taken over the last couple of weeks :)

There are a few of Honey and Kitten playing in the paddling pool. Then there are a few I took last Saturday a dog event (Wag and Bones Show), I got some cute ones there of Kitten and Tia, I bet you will love them!! And finally we had friends over on Sunday for a BBQ, and I got a couple of photos of Honey desperatly wanting the pop corn a friend of mine was eating!

I have just realised that there isn't a single photo of Molly there, probably because she was confined to barracks as she is in season!

Newfoundland Pictures / Honey is a star!
« on: July 26, 2006, 10:05:27 am »
As some may know we do a little showing with our Newfs, well just Honey at the moment, but we are hoping to be able to show Kitten again soon.

Last Thursday we were at the East of England Championship show and Honey got a 1st in her class ;D, and this Monday we were at the Leeds Championship show, and again Honey got a 1st ;D. What a star!!!

They were both really hot days, around 30 degrees, which we are not really used to over here! So I was so chuffed that my baby moved so beautifully in the ring, some of the dogs really didn't want to know... Can't say I blame them!

I took some photos, of course. The first is Honey under her bench, she refused to get on it, but as it was so warm I left her where she was. Then we bought her an ice cream as a treat, which she loved of course ;D. And finally I made her stand, only she had been soaked a few time with cool water by the time the photo was taken, so she didn't look as good as she did in the show ring!

I wasn't sure where to put this post, so plummed for here, hope that is ok!

I haven't been around the last few weeks, because I have had my hands full. You would think three Newfs would be a handful, but compared to the new little demon they are a doddle!!!

So what is the little demon? An English Cocker Spaniel ;D. The Newfs love her, well the two browns anyway, Molly just goes as far away from the pup (Tia) as she can get!!! She tazz's around the other pair and they get all excited, so I just have to make sure she doesn't get stood on!!!

Here are a few piccies of Tia, and Tia meeting the Newfs ;D

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Dogs killed for their fur
« on: April 20, 2006, 02:09:14 am »
I don't know if this is the right area to put this, but...

Did you know that dogs and cats are being killed in China for their fur :o? I won't go into details anout how they are killed as it is too upsetting. But this is happening and then the fur is sold to make coats and even cuddly toys >:(

We were sent a letter about it by the Newfoundland Club in the UK and asked to send letters to the relevant MP's, which I have duely done. But I thought I would bring it to your attention in case you didn't know.

I took this from Heather Mills McCartney's site...
Quote
In the photo on the right Rick Swain is holding the pelt of a skinned cat, Heather Mills McCartney is holding a coat made from 31 brown cats and Rick Wakeman is holding a rug made from 4 golden retriever dogs. At the conference, Struan Stevenson MEP also showed a coat made from 42 alsatian puppies.

78 animals had to suffer a cruel and vicious death to make 4 garments...... .Please help us put an end to this barbaric trade.

Here are two web sites where you can get more information, and sign a petition to get it stopped.

Newfoundland Pictures / Babies birthday
« on: April 19, 2006, 07:10:47 am »
Can you believe my little puppies (Honey and Kitten) were a year old on Sunday (16th). Doesn't time fly, it doesn't seem two minutes ago since they were 3 weeks old and sucking my fingers... Awwww.

Here's a couple of photos of them, Kitten is the one with the lack of fur on his leg, but it is growing back!! And one photo has our old black Molly on it ;D... Excuse the hubby, he was having to keep the babies apart to stop them from playing, Kitten isn't allowed to play yet.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Kitten Had His Op
« on: March 23, 2006, 03:15:04 pm »
Well it is a week now since our little (ok not so little :D) Kitten went in for his operation.

Our vet had diagnoised OCD in his elbow joints, but wanted to refer him some where else as he didn't have the experience. Then he refused to claim the money for the op direct from the insurance company, he wanted us to pay for it and then claim it back :-X. Since we had already spent £300 and were waiting for it back we didn't feel we could pay out anymore at that time. So to cut a long story short ;) we went to a veterinary hospital a few miles away. So now we have a new vet as our old one said he didn't want us back!!!

Anyway, the new vet looked at the x-rays and said Kitten had OCD in both elbows, but worse in the right. But he also said he had elbow dysplacia in the right leg as well. So he said he would clean out the elbow joints, and then as the dysplasia was caused by one of the bones in his front leg growing quicker than the other, he would break the shorter bone :o. Apparently when the broken bone then mends it is the same length as the other one.

He also said you can see on the x-rays, lines in the bones where they are growing, which is pano!!! Can one dog have anymore problems with his bones? ::)

So our 70kg, 11 month old gorgeous little Newfie boy is hobbling round with a broken leg. He is having to be kept away from his nutter of a sister, so he is in the living room with his doting mummy and daddy, and she and the old girl are having to stay in the dining room. They have to have their meals at different times, and they can't go in the garden at the same time either...It's a nightmare, but if he can live a normal life one of these days it will be worth it :).

We are keeping him a crate as much as possible but we have to let him out sometimes as we feel it is cruel to leave him in there all the time. His daddy has been sleeping in the living room with him since his op... That is fine by me as they both snore like nothing you have ever heard!

I can't believe all this has happened when we always go to breeders who screen their dogs for health problems. I suppose it is just one of them things, we certainly wouldn't want to swap our little boy, he is so lovely.

The breeder we had our first two Newfies off says she puts her pups onto adult food when they are 4 months old to stop them growing too fast. The vet thinks this is the cause of Kitten's problems, so we will do the same with our next pup. But we thought with them being on puppy large breed they would be fine. His sister is as fit as an ox!

Kitten has to go back to the vets next Tuesday for a check up and to have his stitches out, hopefully the vet will be happy with the way things are going :)... I will let you know ;)

...So I am just wondering what they are like to live with, how much grooming they need, walking, temperament and all that kind of stuff :)

I told her as far as I know they have the same sort of personality as my Newfs as the breeds are related, but I don't really know much about them.

Can you give me any information about what they are really like, as opposed to what the books say!

Thanks :)

Newfoundland Discussions / Crufts Dog Show
« on: March 11, 2006, 06:03:36 pm »
Crufts dog show is on at the moment over here in the UK. I was there on Thursday with Honey, and guess what? She got a 1st in the bitch puppy class ;D.... How great is that?!

I knew she had a chance of a place as she is a really nice pup, but it all depended on whether the judge liked her type, colour (browns often get ignored in the ring), and whether she moved as well as we know she can. Well she must have done everything right on the day... And the judged liked browns!

Because she got a first she is now qualified for next years Crufts as well ;D

Just a shame we couldn't take Kitten too because of his OCD, wouldn't it have been nice if he had a got a placing as well... He is in for an op on his elbows next Thursday :-[

Medical Conditions & Diseases / OCD
« on: March 01, 2006, 08:59:37 pm »
Does anyone have any experience of OCD?

Kitten, my 10 month old Newfie, has been diagnoised with it today, and we are now being referred to an orthopaedic vet.

Kit has had an on off limp for 4-5 months, it was put down to growing pains as it went within a few days of him being on metacam. But it has since come back and the metacam doesn't seem to be doing much, although when he is walking he seems fine. But at the weekend we took him to a show and he limped all the way around the ring. :-[

Now we know that we need to keep him relatively quiet, which is going to be hard with us having his completely nutty litter sister. But is there anything else we should be doing? We don't even know if he should be going for short walks or not.

He has never been allowed up stair, walked on uneven ground, and he has always been lifted into our van.... He puts his front legs in these days, but waits for the back end to be lifted! He does jump out of the van himself, but it isn't far from the floor. I keep wondering if it is something we have done, or not done that has caused this?

I have had Newfies for nearly 10 years but have never experienced this before, so any advice is gratefully recieved.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Hello Big Dog Owners
« on: February 01, 2006, 05:46:12 pm »
Hi all, I have just found this forum while searchin the Internet ;D.

My name is Shelley, I live in the UK and I have 4 Newfies, 2 blacks and 2 browns. Molly was the first to join the house hold, she is 10 years old in a couple of months and still as active as the youngsters ;). Then came Bronte, who was brown, sadly she had a stroke last year after an operation, it is Bronte in my avatar. Ten days before Bronte died our first boy was born, his name is Kitten as he is so soft, he is also brown, and not quite 10 months old yet. We talked his breeder into letting us have his brown sister too as we had lost Bronte, her name is Honey. And then lastly there is Lacey, a black female, we haven't actually got her yet as she is only a week old, but she is already considered a part of the family ;D

My username is galaxybears as that is our Kennel Club affix. We have never bred any pups but we do show our Newfs and also do waterwork with them. But the rest of the time they are just our constant companions

That is my mad house in a nut shell :)

Looking forward to getting to know you all ;D

Shelley
