General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Puppy breath! At last!
« on: July 07, 2006, 08:28:57 pm »
Well, here he is folks.  I am pleased to introduce Wyatt Earp, Jasper's new little brother (more like great-grandson).  We found a reputable breeder up in Quebec, scrounged up some extra cash, and drove up and back on July 3.  He will be nine weeks old tomorrow.  I will post pics when I get a digital camera (of Jasper, too, for that matter).

Thank you, everyone, for helping with breed advice, breeder advice, and all the rest.

He is a Wirehaired Poining Griffon and already has a little moustache.

Can someone please give me some reassurance?

I have been searching for a puppy for six or more months now.  My husband wants a spinone (I have mentioned this elsewhere on this board).  I did a lot of research, emailed a lot of people, and found a woman who would have pups ready in the northeast when I could train one (end of June- I work the school calendar).  We spoke several times and I felt really good.  Unfortunately, when we got around to price, it turned out to be too much ($1200-1500).  I sadly told her I could not afford one of her pups (after I saw the pictures, oh I almost died!) and started searching all over again.  Alas, the few breeders with pups ready all want $1200-$2000.

I talked my husband into looking at thier "cousins" (German Wire-haired pointers, Cesky Fousaks sp?, Wire pointing griffons, basically anything large and scruffy w/a beard).  Thier personalities aren't quite as perfect for us as the spinone (good w/all kids, non-territorial), but close enough.

We had a few close calls on petfinder, but it always fell through.  Thousands of great dogs, but not too many perfect puppies on there.  We already have an older rescue and we now want a baby.

I have found NAVDA German Wirehiared Pointer puppies for sale on a site called pupcity.  The breeder is out of Champion, Michigan.  He wants $250 - 400 per pup.  We would be responsible for shipping or transport.  This, I can afford.

Please let me know if you have heard anything, even if what you heard was, "Yeah, it was okay."  Then I will at least know it's not some sort of death trap for dogs.

If I don't find something to bring into the house this week or next, it will be too late for me to break the dog in before returning to school.  I may have to wait another year.

Thank you for any advice you can give-

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Nebolish??

Has anyone heard of this type of mastiff?  They seem wonderful and are so pretty.  Does anyone know about temperment?

Hi all,

I'm looking for opinions.

1) What are the least non-agressive breeds out there?  Breeds that love everyone, including children, strangers on the street, or people walking in the front door unannounced.

2) Which breeds are not high-energy?  Breeds that would be fine with a couple of walks a day and lots of indoor playtime and romping vs. breeds that are jogging companions or get into trouble because of boredom.

3) Which breeds do not shed or drool heavily?

Now, does anyone have any large-size picks that combine all three traits?  Shedding and drooling are the least important, but we are trying to be realistic about our future together.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / breeder referral silly Q
« on: April 16, 2006, 01:53:42 pm »
Hi all,

Here's one for you.  If a person wants a pup, and asks a breeder who does not currently have pups, does the breeder gain anything from connecting her with someone else?

Someone out there is working very hard to find me a puppy, which is wonderful and I am ever so grateful.  The thing is, she doesn't know me and I was wondering why she would work so hard.  So is it, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, be thankful you found someone friendly" or "Be careful?"

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / kennel cough exposure
« on: March 12, 2006, 05:18:42 pm »
Okay, we just came back from a walk.

My old dog was sniffing and "playing" w/a 4 mth old bull dog.  After about five minutes of us hanging around, the dog growled at Jasper.  I mentioned that it was cute, because he was such a baby.  The owner replied, "Oh, he's not growling.  He has kennel cough."

She didn't realize it was contagious.  She did say her pup has been on medication for 24 hours after I said that just like kids, he probably isn't contagious after being on antibiotics for 24 hours.  I hope she was telling the truth.  We are probably okay, right?  It was really five minutes of contact at most.

Spinone Italiano Discussions & Pictures / spinone?
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:17:04 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have always had a dog and I don't think I can ever live without one.  My husband of 15 years is lukewarm about dogs.  We currently have an old Walker coonhound rescue (who is as sweet as can be) and we are considering getting a puppy for him.  My husband has decided that if we are going to get a second dog, he gets to pick the breed and he has decided on a spinone.  No, I don't know why.  My daughters and I don't care what kind of breed we get, but we do have a wish list of characteristic s.  We would like a dog who does not have a high energy level (once they reach the adult stage), does not have a high guarding instinct, is not at all aggresive, and is not an ankle-biter.  We also want to steer clear of dogs who are highly intelligent.  My mother recently acquired a black mouth cur and you can't turn your back on her for a second. (In other words, we are looking for big, slow, stupid and friendly).

The other preference is that we get a puppy as opposed to an adult dog.  My girls have been raised with elderly companions and now that they are 8 and 10, we feel the time is right to take on a puppy.

So, who has advice or opinions?
