Great Pyrenees Discussions / how do I get him to play outside?
« on: August 10, 2006, 03:27:55 am »
Or is this another Pyr thing I should just accept? LOL
Toby (who is a Pyr/Lab mix about 8 months old) will not run around and play in our yard. When we go out to potty, he goes from one gate to the other thinking about escaping (he can currently get out of both of them). If I throw a ball he sometimes runs after it, but usually just looks at me like I'm crazy. He does dig some, which is fine with me, but usually doesn't get much activity in. Then we go inside and he picks up a toy and runs around like a crazed dog. If I take him back outside half the time he will just wander around and then lay on the patio.
I know it is hot and this may be contributing some, but he has most always done this.
Also he will run and play until exhausted when I let him go next door and play with their dog. We are thinking about geting another dog, the neighbors are moving soon. I don't know if that would help or not.
Also because he escapes I can't leave him alone. I don't mind this a bit. I just wish I knew a way to get him to use up that energy while we are out there.

After reading the article posted about preventing children from getting bitten I have some concerns.
Our puppy is 6 months old-a lab/pyr mix. Our sons are 3 and 5.
The 3 yr.old has some learning to do still about how to treat a puppy nicely. I never leave them alone (well except maybe to go to the bathroom, but that site said not to even do that).
So the other day we were all out back. The 3 yr. old ran towards Toby (the pup) and raised his hand to him, but did not hit him. Then he stood staring at Toby and took off running and making a growling type noise. Toby chased him, then jumped up nipping his ear and simultaneously knocking him to the ground. My hubby just said-well he asked for it-meaning our son.
But after reading that article I wonder if I should be really worried about this. It's not the first time he has been knocked down by the dog or nipped at hard enough to leave a scratch. It had gotten better, but now seems to be escalating again.
I am worried that something worse could happen, but don't know what to do. I am having a very difficult time in general making my 3 yr. old listen. He is just being very stubborn and willful. No amount of punishment seems to matter, and I am now afraid he is just going to make the dog mean. I am worried we made a bad choice by getting a dog at all.  ???
Does anyone have any advice? Is puppy biting indicative of future problems?

Here is a brief synopsis (i hope) of our life with Toby. He is the first dog we have ever owned, so I am bit clueless sometimes.
He is a 6-7 month old Great Pyrenees/Yellow Lab mix we got from a rescue group. He is way more laid back than any lab I have ever sen, puppy or not. When we first got him, he was like velcro to us, and seemed unsure, but he eventually came around and started actually eating all of his food, instead of picking at it, and playing ball with us in the backyard, instead of just running away. We have had him for about 3 months.
Then about 3 weeks ago some relatives came to visit and brought their lab. He had a ball playing with the other dog. Our neighbors also had a lab at their house that weekend who kept getting into our yard. So after they were all gone everything went back to the way it was when we first got him only worse. He wouldn't eat a full meal for 5 days, no matter how long I left the food down. He threw up a few times that week. (maybe hunger? Not throwing up after eating but close to meal time-just yellowish mucous). He refused to play ball with us anymore outside. I bought him new toys, he didn't care. We go out back and he just lays on the patio and looks at us. He has seemed to imprve some only to go back to this sad behavior again. The past 2 feedings he has finished in nothing flat and he did play with the kids outside last night. He also seems to have gotten worse about chewing things up in the house. I feel like he needs more-more what though? Exercise, I take him on walks at least twice a day. But like I said he won't run around the yard anymore. If I leave him alone out back he jumps the fence and runs off. I have bought several new toys the past few weeks to try to relieve the boredom of the old ones, but he isn't interested for long. I should also say i am a stay at home mom, so aside from taking kids to school and errands I am home a lot. He just threw up again as I am typing this. (can dogs throw up for psychological reasons?) I feel like maybe having another dog would help but I don't know.
Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / HI! New pyr owner here!
« on: June 01, 2006, 06:56:46 am »
Hi there! I have been reading here for a month or so and thought I would register and introduce myself.
We (being my hubby, 2 sons and I) have a Great Pyrenees/Yellow Lab mix. He is about 6-7 months old, and we have had him for almost 3 months. From wht I have read, he seems to be displaying more Pyr tendencies than lab. He is our first dog and I am feeling like I need some advice on things so here I am!
