General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Spoiled pictures.....
« on: April 25, 2007, 08:09:26 am »
Just wanted to share some pictures of Yukon becoming more spoiled than usual.  We are on a mini vacation here in Indiana taking care of my mom, and I could only bring one of my puppers, so I brought Yukers since he is the oldest and most well behaved.  I do think that he is starting to revel in the "only dog" lifestyle though and will be completely rotten when we get back home.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Finally found the gates...
« on: March 25, 2007, 01:55:25 am »
Awhile back I had an issue with finding gates big enough to fit my doorways so that I could keep my crew in the dining room and avoid the torn up mess that results in giving them free reign of the house when I am not home.  I searched high and low, and finally found 1 petsmart in all of the Hampton Roads area that carried them.
Here are some pictures, and thank you all again for the advise that you gave!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Advice please!
« on: February 13, 2007, 08:29:33 pm »
Alright, here is the situation....I am what you would call a push over.  I have the big bark of the alpha in the house, but when it comes to problem behavior I have no idea how to stop it.  The latest straw was this evening...it is cold and muddy outside, so I let the puppers stay in the house while we ran out for some errands.  They had been in most of the day, and there were no messes or anything, so I was feeling confident.  I came home this evening to find one of my down pillows shredded all over the living room, dining room and most of the way up the stairs.  Every treat in the house that could have been reached was gone, and now I can't punish because no one will know what they are getting in trouble for.  What do I do?  I know that there are tons of people who leave their dogs in the house when they go out....why can't I be one of those people?  I don't want to kennel just to keep them in the house, but when it is muddy and nasty like this, the 30-45 mins that it takes just to towel all of the mud off of everyone is a pain in the rear!  How do I stop the chewing?  I hate to say it, but I think that Harley is the instigator, and the boys follow her lead.  I want them to have free reign of the house, but now I feel like I have to have her in my sights at all times.  HELP!!!

Now, don't get me wrong...if the tax return hadn't come I would have never done this, but since I live in Norfolk, I was able to go to the ONLY Mrs. Bone's boutique, and I got Harley a collar!!!!  I never thought that I would put out that kind of money for a collar, but I got the "Martingale" style that has the tightening loop because she is h*ll on a leash, and she showed improvement as soon as I put it on.  I am thinking of getting the boys each one now!  Not to mention, I got to spend 30 mins trying on collars with her to make sure we got the perfect design and color!!

Rottweiler Pictures / My window licker
« on: February 03, 2007, 10:35:02 am »
So I can't really figure out why he does this, but if there is any kind of glass between me and Yuk, he will just lick and lick as if he is going to be able to make the glass go away and get to me.  He has moved a chair around on the back porch so that he can stand on it and look at me and lick the window to the computer room.  These pictures were just taken, right before I broke down and let them in!!  Suprisingly, aside from a few streaks, the windows that he licks are pretty clean!  He is VERY maticulous about it!

What a DORK!

Well it has been almost a month since we brought Harley home, and I thought that I would post some pics and give you guys an update.  Her first 2 weeks were a little rough, breaking the nipping issue, and she got a really bad upper respitory infection, but after that, it was like she had been with us her entire life!  I can't understand why anyone would give up this precious little girl.  As you can see by the pics attached, she is anything but hyper active and uncontrolable (like the shelter said!).  We have a few mins of bouncy shows of love when everyone is let in, and then she retires to her new favorite place, the spare room, and sleeps.  She will come downstairs about once an hour to get some love and give me some kisses, and then it is back up to her bed!  Not to say that she spends 100% of the time up there, but even when she is hanging out downstairs with us, she picks one of the dog beds and crashes out!  I have a feeling that the boys are giving her a run for her money when they are outside, and she is just pooped.  They do play in the house once in a while, and she loves to pick on Dodge!  Serves him right for all of the suffering he has heaped on Yukon!  We are also working on breaking the dogs from the couches.  It is hard, because I miss snuggling with them as much as they miss the couch, but it was getting out of control!  Dodge and Yukon are the hardest because they have been allowed up since the day they came home as babies!!!  As you can see from Dodges pic, he just isn't happy with me about it!  Hope you guys enjoy the pics!

Group Discussions & Photos / Tiny Paw Houseguests!
« on: January 07, 2007, 12:27:38 pm »
My Dad and stepmom were here for the weekend and they have 3 Poms!  We had 3 big paws and 3 tiny paws in the house for the last 2 days :o, and it was okay!  The Poms stayed on the couch if at all possible and my crew just watched and tried to get them to play at every chance!  I didn't get many pictures, but here are two of the little guys, and one of my guys watching while the little ones got to go out front to use the bathroom!

By the way, my hats off to all of you that have the high number of dogs in your house!!  Nerves of Steel!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Alright, bring the advice!!
« on: January 04, 2007, 11:35:19 am »
Harley is working out great in our house, but there is one little problem.  She is a nipper.  How do I break this in an adult dog.  With puppies it was easy and we never really had much of a problem, but she gets excited and nips at everything she can touch with her mouth.  Should I grab her muzzle when she does it and tell her no?  I am still getting to know her, and I don't want to do anything that will make her skittish, but with the child in the house, I have to break this habit.  The kid got "warned" the first night cause Harley was laying on the couch half asleep and my daughter started petting near her tail.  She snapped, but didn't make contact.  I think that it had to do with her still getting adjusted, but I don't want to assume that and then have something happen.  I know how to flip them on their backs for submission purposes, but my daughter can't, so how do I show Harley that Devin is higher in the pack then she is?

I guess that really makes two things!

Oh, and on another note....due to the reason that she was surrendered to the shelter (too hyper), and the breed itself, I am suprised to find that now she just picks a spot in the living room and lays down.  Maybe a few mins of playing and jumping with the boys when they first come back inside, but other than that she is very calm and....well lazy!  Any ideas?

Weimaraner Discussions & Pictures / New Family Member!!!
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:01:13 pm »
We have been waiting on her for 3 days, and got to bring her home today ;D

We went out right after christmas looking to rescue a female dog to be the ying to my boys yang.  I wasn't in a hurry, but as soon as I saw her there we had to get her.  She was a store bought puppy and was surrendered cause she was too energetic for her owners.  She is a purebred Weim, and it is just a miracle that we found her!  She had been left on 26 Dec and we found her on the 31st.  I am so excited to add another Big Paw to the family, and since this is the first dog that I have every rescued, it makes her extra special.  I feel blessed to give her a forever home!

Now let the pictures begin!!!

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / How to make a road trip better....
« on: December 30, 2006, 12:27:43 pm »
First you start with Grandparents and an Aunt giving more toys for christmas to the dog grandkids than the human grandkid! (Because of the "doggie stockings"....don't think that I got off that easy...it was a good thing I was driving a truck to get her spoiled butt and toys home too!)
Then you start a 12 hour drive home and have a normally wonderful car dog puking every 3 hours!  Apparently during the "Toy Massacare of Christmas 06", a very large piece of plastic "something" got swallowed!  Eventually the offending object came up, but my truck reeks, and needless to say, it made for a VERY long drive home!
Here are some pictures of the boys and their christmas stash.  Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for the new year!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New To Big Paws
« on: November 28, 2006, 09:24:54 am »
Just wanted to drop my first message and say hi to everyone.  I just found this site today, and I love it.  I have 2 big dogs.  Yukon is my 3 yr old Rottie, and Dodge is my 1 yr old Dane.  I love talking about my dogs and sharing stories and good information with people who have the same big goofy family members.  It is funny, I heard someone on TV say the other day that it seems like pets are more members of the family lately.....whe re have these people been?  My dogs are like my kids! Anyway, just wanted to say hi!
