Medical Conditions & Diseases / lipomas bleeding?
« on: April 30, 2009, 12:56:41 pm »
Butt has a large lipoma on his back. He has been to the Vets twice to have it drained, the last time was 10 days ago. Tonight my 14 yr old came to me and said I better check Butt's bump. I went to feel it and it is more raised up and is a blood color and you the hair all around it is bloody. I tried the Vets office and they were closed for the night. Question- should I wait for the Vet to open at 8am and call them or should I take him to the ER Vets tonight?

Sorry this is long, but I really need help.I posted about a month ago about adding Pogo( mixed breed 80-90lbs) to our family, but was worried about how to introduce him and Butt since Butt isn't found of other dogs, besides Tub.We have worked on and off with them and Butt is better then he was, but not where I was comfortable enough to bring Pogo here. Well fast forward to yesterday and now life is so messed up.

John was at his house having some work done around there and the people working left the gate to the back yard open and Pogo got out and bit a 7 yr old in the face, she had to have 22 stitches. Nobody saw exactly what happened, but this came out of the blue. Never would we have ever expected this from him. My 6 & 2 yr old nephews and 4 yr old niece play with him all the time, never any problems. If they do something he doesn't like he has always gave them a little growl to say that's enough. I have taken him for lots of walks and have never had any issues with anyone we have met. I've taken him to the pet store and no issues there either. I'm dumbfounded that this happened. The dog warden has not been out to see him yet, but John went to their office. The lady there said he wouldn't be out to sleep for at least 10 days if they were going to do it. For now he is home until the dog warden comes, then we will see if they take him to their facility. The lady also told him that if they decide he doesn't need to be put to sleep, that he should still think about it, because once they bite like that they are more likely to again. Needless to say we are very concerned about my nephews and nieces and what could happen. So please any advice, thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Indroducing another dog
« on: January 07, 2009, 07:01:17 am »
What is the best way to introduce another dog to Butt? He has never been fond of other dogs, he excepted Tub because he was a puppy when he came home. I'm thinking about having a guy move in with me and he has a dog. I've been putting it off for months because I haven't been sure how to introduce the dogs. The other dog is a med. size (90 lbs) male mixed breed. Should I introduce Tub first since I think he will except him fine? Should they all be introduced together? Should I muzzle Butt to make sure he doesn't bite? All help will be greatly appreciated.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Acl surgery
« on: January 05, 2009, 07:07:57 am »
This is for my friend who can't register right now, I thought if I posted this for her at least she could read the responses.

My dog Rizzo just had surgery on Friday. She had a torn acl. The ligament was 75% torn. My husband and I did all the research before she went in for surgery. We wound up going with the mono filament route. That is actually fishing line to fix the ligament. Just a stronger grade of it. I was wondering if any one had this type of surgery on any of there dogs. I know the healing time is 8-12 weeks. Very little activity. I was wondering if any one else that has had this done with your dog, if you can give me any other tips for the healing process. It's going to be a pretty long recovery for her and me  So if anyone can throw any extra info on this, it would be very much appreciated.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Puppy vs dog ?
« on: September 02, 2008, 11:39:58 am »
I always call Tub(Saint) my puppy and this weekend my Mom was in town and asked how long he would be a puppy for. I told her I suppose as long as I call him one ;) So now I'm wondering if there is a certain age where they go from being a puppy to a dog?

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Glucosamine & Chondroiton Dosage
« on: August 27, 2008, 10:37:06 am »
I was wondering if anyone knew the dosage G&C for a 7 lb dog? I was talking to my Aunt last night and convinced her to try it for both herself and her dog,but didn't know what dosage to tell her for her dog. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for not checking in more, my life has been so busy lately.Butt and Tub are doing great. Tub turned 1 yr 10 mths yesterday,it seems like he was just a wee puppy the other day:) I'm taking a couple days off next week so maybe I can come hang out and get caught up with everyone.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Chicken Tub strikes again....
« on: June 25, 2008, 09:01:22 pm »
Besides Butt and Tub I live with 25 birds.Tub is terrfied of them, which is okay for both his safety and theirs and he never has to go in their part of the house for anything,so it's not an issue.Well the outside birds are a different story,he will get in his pounce attack pose and leap at them. The other day I was walking them and he tried his stealth mode on a robin.I teasingly told him you better watch it the big birds are watching and they are going to get you.Well a few hours later him and I were hanging out in the front yard when a crop duster flying low went right over top of the house. He never saw it coming, but when he did he did a u turn to head in the house as fast as his skinny legs would take him.I thought he was going to take the doggy door out when he ran through it.They were dusting the field across the road from us so they kept buzzing the house for half an hour. For the first bit he ran through the house barking, but then decided he should go hide under my desk. Now when ever he hears an airplane he freezes for a minute to listen and then he starts barking at it.Needless to say Mama's perdiction about the big bird coming after him came true ;)

THE DOG

Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but  seldom, if ever, smell one another?

Dear God:  When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same  old story?

Dear God:  Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the  colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a dog? How often  do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride! Would it be so  hard to rename the 'Chrysler Eagle' the ' Chrysler Beagle'?

Dear God:  If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he  still a bad dog?

Dear God:  We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles,  horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagneti c energy fields, and  Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?

Dear God:  More meatballs, less spaghetti, please.

Dear God: Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I  have to apologize?

Dear God:  Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must remember to be a good dog.

1. I will  not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.

2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just  because I like the way they smell.

3. The Litter Box is not a  cookie jar.

4. The sofa is not a 'face towel'.

5. The  garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.

6. I will not play  tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.

7.  Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying  'hello'.

8. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm  under the coffee table .

9. I must shake the rainwater  out of my fur before entering the house - not after.

10. I will not  come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.

11. I will not  sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch .

12. The  cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that  noise, it's usually not a good thing.

P.S. Dear  God: When I get to Heaven may I have my testicles  back?

and would probably be right ;)As many of you know Butt has had some issues with agression towards visitors at our house and also a limp that the Vet couldn't find a reason for.I'm a free thinker and I will try anything to help my babies,so I thought I would share our experience with you.I contacted an animal communicator to talk with Butt to see if that would give me some insight into his attitude and limping. And to also have her give him some distance Reiki sessions to see if they helped with his limp. Here's the transcript from his reading:

Hi Butt, I am an animal communicator.. your Mom, Michelle asked me to speak with you today..May I? "It would be quite alright with me..certainly (actually a very, very dignified voice I am hearing)" "I am here to protect..prote ct Mom and the home.."

I am happy to hear that..you know Mom loves you dearly.. Are you happy with her? Anything she can do to make you happier dear? "I am as happy as a dog can be.." Do you like Tub..."Why yes!!" (sounding surprised)..
So, you enjoy Tub's company? '"Oh, Tub needs me..you know before I came here..I did not know the company of another dog like this."

What do you mean? "I did not enjoy the company of another dog as much as Tub's" Oh, that's nice.. would you like to talk about your previous homes?

"What would you like to know?" What were they like? (the first home I see him in, I see a tall Latino looking man..young, very young..standin g over him)..Did you like your first home? "Was too young to know anything different..was very young there.." How old were you when you left there, with the young man? "Oh, was only there a few months..was still a puppy..he said I got way too big, too fast for his place.." "Sent me to live with his uncle." (I see an older man, with a cigar or cigarette in his mouth..a little belly..grey hair..looks to be around 60 yrs old..retired.. I see Butt sitting on a concrete patio watching him watering some plants..older house..high bushes in front yard..stucco house..detache d garage on side of patio..looks like a warm climate to me.. California comes to mind..) What happened in that home? "Oh, I was too much work for the old guy..then I went to live with a lady..she and a man (boyfriend)." What happened there? "I was there for a couple of years.. then the man left...so it was me and the lady...she got a new man..then I had to go." Where did you go? "Rescue..that's all I know.." Then what? "Was with a family, they had a horse, and a couple of other dogs like myself..there a while..then came here." So, you are about 4 or 5 years old? "That sounds correct..." You were with the foster people for one year, elderly man one year and young man a few months.."Yes.." Okay..Mom wanted to know your age.. so that is it, she is right..

You had 4 homes before Mom.. 1 being rescue/foster care? "Yes"..

How about your leg? Does it hurt you? (I am sensing it is his left side..that the limp is on).. "Does not hurt, gets stiff.." Oh, like you have to shake it to get going..that way? "Yes.." (I am sensing that it has to do with an injury, but the injury was so minor. Not registering on any x-rays or such.. I am feeling that the bone density can be increased just enough with suppliments.. I can actually see that a "fusing" will occur if he gets on the right suppliments..b one will be more condensed.) So, there is no pain, just stiffness. "Yes." Do you remember when you got hurt.. "Was when in foster home..running and playing, running and playing..left leg..slid into something trying to stop.." "I actually did that samething a few times.." So, no break or anything..just a constant strain on that leg several times in a row? "Yes, then it felt weak for a while after that.. then it did not..".

Anything you'd like to say to Mom? "I love you very much and I am here to protect you..happiest with you.." Can she do anything to make you happier? "No, not really..like to take long walks with her and Tub..do things together like that.." How do you like all the others you live with?
"Oh, they're fun! I hear them all day..they say this, they say that..funny guys...chatter, chatter..makes the day go by.." What does Tub think? "Samething, we laugh..we look at each other and think they are funny little creatures.." But, you like them.. "Oh, sure..I enjoy them, so does Tub.."

Mom says that there are some people you do not like.. can you tell me why? "Well, I told you I am here to protect Mom and if I get a bad feeling (energy) from someone, I tell them to stay away from my Mom and Tub." Oh, so it is their energy.. if they have bad energy, then you don't like them.
"Naturally, isn't that the way it is..bad energy, bad feeling.. go away..leave us
alone." My you are a strong and protective boy..I can see why Mom loves you so much.. "Thank you."

Well, you know some people do not mean Mom or you any harm. They may have bad energy, but will not hurt either of you..so you must be careful and not behave badly towards all with bad energy. "Never thought about that..have to protect though..be careful.." Yes, but just like some people are loud, but will not hurt you..these people many are like that.. only show aggression if the person is going to do something to you, Tub or Mom.. if they have bad energy.. does not mean they will hurt you.. "Oh, true.. did not think of that.." That way, you save your energy and Mom's and do not annoy people who have no intention of hurting you.. "Oh, yes.."

Did you have bad experiences with people in other homes.. being mean, aggressive? "Well, when living with elderly man..the neighborhood was not nice..so, I was always on my toes." Oh, were you the only dog with him.. 'Naww. He had an older black dog..very sleepy guy..okay though..I had the energy there..old man was not used to my energy..so, I went to a place where I could run and play.." Yes, were you had that small injury.. "yes"..

Well Dear, did you like the Reiki I sent you last night? "OH, yes..felt nice and tingly, made me sleepy.." I am going to send you more tonight and tomorrow night as I want to help heal that small injury that the vets cannot find on x-rays..Okay Dear? "Sure..like it, you have nice energies..calm ing, healing, soothing..".

Well, I want you to be nice to people that come in your home for Mom. Now, if there is a threat of danger, Mom will send you energies saying that she needs your help.. to stop these people. Would you be able to pick up on her thoughts and energy in that case? "Of course, I hear you and feel your energies." Okay, so we agree you will only get upset with people when Mom tells you - sends you images that they are bad to stop them..and only when she sends these commands to you. "Okay, that makes sense."

Okay, well Dear.. I will go now..anything else to tell Mom? "Mom, don't worry so much..everythi ng is fine..you need to not worry so much...things are good here for all of us..".

Great! She will be happy to hear that.. Well, Dear Butt..Goodbye for now.."Okay, nice lady..Goodbye."

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Anyone looking for a Saint?
« on: April 23, 2008, 04:55:23 am »
Well he is at least part Saint, they think he has some mix in him,but not sure what.He is a darker red then my boys and his legs are freckled with that red.

I went to the pet store today to get fish and the local HS was there and I heard a big dog bark and had to go see. Then I fell in love ;)I spent an hr with him just hanging out and I also took him for a walk. They said he passed all his behavioral tests with A's and B's.He's 2 yrs old and weighs 94 lbs. When I was in the store hanging with him he was very loving and let me touch him any where I wanted. He also let me pull some burdock out of his fur and never fussed.I took him out for a walk,he pulled a bit,but I would think that was part of being couped up in the store in a crate all day.His adoption fee is $250.Between that and worring about Butt's reastion I couldn't bring him home.I feel so bad for leaving him there and knowing he came in with 2 others that were back at the shelter has not gave my mind much rest today :( When I was hanging with him I knew I couldn't take him home, but I figured at least I was giving him some love and out time while I was there. Here's a pic I took of him when we went for the walk,it really doesn't do him justice.

Modified to add that he is in Toledo,OH

Anything Non-Dog Related / Anyone know anything about bunnies??
« on: April 15, 2008, 04:22:27 pm »
My yard is like a roller coaster,so this year I wanted to use the lawn roller on it.Well yesterday when me and the boys were out for our walk I see Mama bunny had already had 2 babies. Both were pulled from the nest and didn't look alive.Today I went and checked and there is only one bunny, but he still doesn't look alive. She did start to line the nest with fur though. My question if this bunny that is left isn't alive will she have more? And how soon? I was so hoping to get this done before she had them and before Mama Killdeer laid her eggs.
