General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Desperate Need of Advice
« on: May 18, 2007, 07:28:33 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I am like the topic says in desperate need of advice. We purchessed our Dane Kimball from what looked to be like a good breeder. She had done all the health checks, had a solid contract, ect .. on the surface everything you would look for in a breeder.
Today in one of the dane e-mail groups i met the woman who bred the Mother of our dane. Everything is not cool! the woman we got Kimball from only co-owned his mother, did not have permission to breed him and forged Z's signature on the AKC paperwork.
She also Forged the health checks and lied about a lot more things (the mother only has 2 akc pts not 9 and the father has some temperament issues.)
Anywho come monday Z is calling the AKC and turning her in for fraud and the whole thing is going to get very ugly.
My problem is we paid a reasonable amount of money for a dane we thought was coming from very solid lines ect and he's not.

What would you do?

He's a puppy so he's lovable but we really haven't bonded all that tightly. I'd really like to return him to the breeder for a refund and use that money towards a dog from a breeder that isn't going to lie to me.

How would one go about making her do the refund tho? i sent her an e-mail tonight asking her to get back to me by monday.. If she doesn't is there anything we can do?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Barking
« on: May 17, 2007, 11:19:32 am »
Hello Everyone,

i need help with a barking problem. Kimball has  turned out to be a barker and we need some advice on how to break him off it.

he barks inside and outside usually trying to get one of the other dogs to play but he also barks if they have a treat or a toy he wants.

Inside it's annoying, outside it's a problem. We have an evil neighbor and if she hears our dog/s barking more than once she calls animal control or the humane society on us trying to turn us in for animal abuse.

i'm not even kidding i am on a first name basis with both the humane society and the animal control group they are here so often.

Anyway advice on how to get him to be quieter would be very helpful!

He also has more energy than any other giant breed puppy that i've ever met. Nobody can keep up with him.. he wears out Serenity and Trip and still wants more.

Because of his energy level we are going to do agility work with him as he gets older to give him an outlet for all that energy

He's also much more of an alpha personality than any of the other dogs so we are already working on the NILIF method of training with him.

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Husband Vent
« on: May 12, 2007, 02:48:34 am »
Hello Everyone,

i'm sure some of you are married out there ... so will forgive me for today's husband vent.

My hubby takes no responsibility for anything! it's driving me crazy and has been for four years now. He goes off to work and comes home and does absolutely nothing.

However since i'm a stay at home Mom he seems to think that my job lets me sit on the couch all day eating brownies and watching tv.

He does not seem to get that taking care of three dogs, a flock of parrots, two young children and cleaning up after him is any actual work.

The two biggest problems is A) he cannot prioritize what needs to be done, he'll do some half @ss job at something that didn't need to be done in the first place and let the baby scream in her crib for an hour while he does it.
and B) he does nothing with the animals! ok he's right there when it comes to petting them and bragging about them to other people .. but when it comes to feeding, training, cleaning, grooming ect ... Nope nothing. Also more than half the time we got the animal cause he wanted it!

i'm at the end of my rope on this! and every time i try and talk to him about it he gets extremely defensive. He'll bring up on specific thing he did weeks ago "Hey remember that time three weeks ago when i feed the dogs!?!" and then ignores the rest of the "talk"

There are some days when i give considerable thought to running away with the dogs and leaving him to deal with the kids.

Meet & Greet BPOers / Arizona Paws?
« on: May 11, 2007, 08:43:34 am »
Hi Everyone,

i was wondering if anyone out there was from arizona as well? we are in buckeye which is west of phoenix but wouldn't mind traveling to the other side of the valley.

I've love to find some people that  wanted to get together with their dogs... preferably in someone's home.. or anyone is
welcome to come here.. we have a large back yard.

I have a couple problems with dog parks. The first being i have two small children and you cannot bring them into the dog park. The second is, i do not drive so i cannot just leave the kids with the hubby and go to the park. Therefore before we can go to the park we have to find a sitter and that seldom works.

The other problem is our dane pup is to young to go (we never take a pup to the park until they are 4-5mo's, had all their shots and been altered.) and he could definately use some socializing.

Anywho if anyone is from AZ and wants to get together at some point i'd love to hear from you!

Great Dane Pictures / Pictures
« on: May 10, 2007, 01:46:01 pm »
Hiya everyone,

wanted to share some Pup pictures :) everyone is doing awesome. Trip Underfoot had his 4th puppy training class today and he did awesome! he is already doing a 2 minute down/stay while a couple of people walk in circles around him ... that's my pup! we will be moving into the advanced obedience class after this one.

Our dane is settling in well, we have had a name change tho! at first we were calling him Sir Robin because everything made him bravely run away away.. (brave..brave sir robin!) but he's  come out of his shell and turned into a proper little monster. He is convinced he is the king of the world and we are going to have to keep a firm grip on him with the whole alpha position ..so his new name is Kimball which seems to fit him perfectly.

Has anyone else attempted to raise two pups at once? how did you keep from going insane at the time?

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Salutations!
« on: May 07, 2007, 12:59:18 pm »
Hello Everyone!

I am sort of new here, i've visited before but then we had some computer malfunctions and i poofed. Anyway i doubt anyone actually remembers me so i will reintroduce myself!

my name is Beth and i'm just outside of phoenix arizona. We have two little girls, Emerald will be 3yrs old in July and Aria just turned 6mo's. I also have a husband who keeps telling me he is an adult but i think he is a two year old in disguise.

The Critters in our family include Five cats (two mutts, two devonshire rex and a bengal.) Five Mice, some Fish and a tarantula.

We also have Fiona, a female Solomon island Eclectus, Raphael a male Vos Eclectus and Omelette a Miligold (blue and gold/military) macaw.

The four legged critters in our family are Serenity a two year old Fila Brasileiro, Trip Underfoot a 5mo old male saint bernard and the newest member of our family Sir Robin (name may not stick) a 9wk old brindle male great dane.

We are currently doing puppy training classes with Trip and he's the smartest dog in his class! (there is only one other dog in his puppy class but it makes him feel special.) He had his first trip to the dog park a few days ago...we waited until he had his full set of puppy shots and had been neutered.

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend!!  one question tho, what happened to the paw prints? they seemed to have vanished.
