Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / My Little Shy Berner...
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:56:15 am »
I am sure that we all remember the kid in the back of the class that wouldn't talk to anyone, would never speak unless forced to, and would walk away as soon as someone tried to talk to them.  This is Maddax he is so shy around people, we take him everywhere with us and he still runs away anytime someone tries to pet him. He will go up to them and sniff, but the minute they try and give him a pet, well I didn't know berners could run so fast.

Now don't let him fool you, when he gets around his friends (he has a full grown berner "sunny" down the street, a minature dachsund "whimper", and a terrier "ariel") or is at home with his brothers he is a different dog.  He can't get close enough.  He has taken to back hugs(paws over sholders licking my ears) when I am leaning over my computer on the couch.

So how can I have him become friendlier around people?  We were hoping to get him involved in Therapy work, but can't if he stays this shy.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Commercial...it was meant to be....
« on: June 02, 2007, 10:29:39 am »
Last year my roommate purchased a Honda Ridgeline truck.  I am watching the Pistons vs the Cavs  (DEEETRRROOOIII TT BAAASKETBAAAAL LLLL) and a comercial comes on that made me laugh out loud.  We were totally destined to get a Bernese Mountain Dog.  Here is a link to the commercial

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Catdog
« on: June 01, 2007, 02:34:46 pm »
I don't know if anyone has ever hear of that show, but my roomie and I are now calling MAddax are little Catdog.  He is picking up on his brothers behavoirs.  For example when they play he will turn side ways and him and Blaine will circle each other like that (he is still trying to figure out how to put his hackles up).  He also likes to pat them like they do each other, if they are sleeping he wll comeup to the, sit down, and then slowly raise his paw to pop them, then run away.

I think my favorite though is the other day he got real low and stalked Julian, pounced on him, and then began to use his back paws to attack(all in fun no hissing or growling).  I will have to get a picture of it.

Has anyone elses BP's picked up on his cat siblings behavoirs?  He is around dogs almost daily, but is now playing with them as if he were a cat.  Should I be worried about this behavoir?

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Trail Hike
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:54:45 am »
Yesterday we went and took Maddax out for a hike.  He did amazing, we had to stop every ten minutes or so for a water break, but other than that he was leaping and bounding everywhere.  We took him on some gentle talis and he couldn't have been more comfortable.

Well on our way back in we had Maddax off leash, we were the only ones on the trail and he was staying within 3 feet of us.  We saw some other hikers coming towards us so Maddax went back on the leash.  It was a woman and two kids I am guessing mid teens and between 8 and 11.  They also had two dogs that were pulling them down the trail.  I wasn't sure of the breed of the one dog, we were thinking Husky/Malmute he was pretty good size easily over 100lbs.  The other dog was good old fashioned mutt (he had really pretty coloring), probably weighed 50-75lbs.  Well as we got closer I shortened Maddax's leash and the husky dragged the little girl off her feet and then another ten feet while she was sliding on her butt.  I stepped between him and Maddax when he started growling and then he snapped at my little man.  All she did was say in a stern voice the dogs name.   The little girl was on her butt trying to control this dog but if he wanted to go he was going.  She could not control him!! She weighed less than him by at least 40lbs.

If you are going to take your dog on the trail be able to control him!!!  He about attacked my dog, who is 2 months old.  Also if this dog cannot be trusted around other strange dogs don't bring him or find a secluded trail where you are unlikely to see other dogs!! We are trying very hard to make Maddax a good trail dog and respectful of other people and animals, so when I meet someone that doesn't even care that her dog about took my baby's head off it is frustrating!!!!!! >:(

Sorry for the rant, but I just needed to vent...

Meet & Greet BPOers / Cheyenne or Fort Collins?
« on: May 20, 2007, 08:55:29 am »
I was curious if anyone here was from Cheyenne WY or Fort Collins CO.  My roommate and I are looking for Maddax to get to know some other big paws.  Right now his friends are  a chihuahua and a shi-tzu.  He is still pretty young, but maybe in the next couple of months.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Football Jersey
« on: May 09, 2007, 12:37:44 pm »
I am having a hard time finding a jersey that will fit my son.  His dad is 120 lbs I am five foot tall and when he jumped on me he was taller than I was.  I am not sure if anyone has bought one for there pup, but I wasn't sure if I should try and find a dog shirt or buy a real jersey to fit him?  If anyone has bought a real jersey what sizes have you chosen?

Once I figure out the size then the fight begins with what team.  I am a die hard, terrible towel waving, Steelers fan.  My roommate likes the Bucs.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / First Timer
« on: May 09, 2007, 12:24:30 pm »
I have owned other dogs in the past, but I will be bringing home my first big boy on Saturday.  I am getting a Bernese Mountain Dog who is already the love of my life.  I was so excited to find this site it is hard to get answers when your son is going to weigh 120 lbs.

My little man's name is Maddax Bjorn (Dax) and the picture is when he was 6 weeks old and already 8lbs.  The other photo is one of Maddax and I.
