Great Dane Discussions / In search of an older great Dane
« on: January 05, 2008, 12:25:41 am »
Ok...so here is the situation. I have an elderly uncle that has always had big dogs. He and his wife always had Labs. Well their last lab passed last fall, and his wife died about 2 months ago, he is all alone. They had gotten a puppy prior to his wifes passing, but my uncle has Parkinson's disease, and this puppy was a nut. It was chewing on his leg's etc. they ended up re homing her. He really wants a dog or cat. I suggested against a cat due to their leg rubbing...I am afraid that it may trip him, same with a small dog. I am convinced that an older Dane (calmer Dane)would be the perfect choice. Even without therapy dog type training every Dane I have had will walk next to me and they could provide a bit of stability for him. Fitted with a harness, he may even be able to have the dog help him up. Thorn is very good at this stuff. My uncle is a small man..about 5' 7" or so and frail due to his disease. He does still drive to town and is able to live alone. The perk to this is he is a Lawyer, with his own firm. He has more than enough money to provide anything a dog would need (millions) he lives in a huge house on the top of a hill, and his 2 grown children live very close by and check in on him often. No one is going to do the work to find him the perfect companion, and he told my dad he really wants one. I am more than happy to help him find a dog. I would like to find a dog in need, that he could spoil and be best friends with. If anyone in Ohio or near by knows of a Dane or hears of one that needs a great home, please let me know. I am also going to take it upon myself to visit and check on them both once a month or so. My dad would like to see his brother more often, and this way everyone wins. And in the event that My Uncle passes or can't care for the dog anymore, it would have a home with us.

Sorry so long, I just wanted to get all the details down.

I was in the mood to draw last night...so I got out these small "canvas' that I had bought. I started drawing a black dane, and it ended up looking like my Tisha. I'll try to scan it later for beter quality pic., but here is a picture I took of it. What do ya think?

Anything Non-Dog Related / Whaaaaa....I need to whine!
« on: December 06, 2007, 07:00:08 pm »
Ok...so I have been sick for over a week with some sort of "bug' (kids and hubby are ill too). My body aches, nose is stuffy, sore throat, and now chest congestion. So last night i was freezing and I put on a new zipper hoodie to keep warm. Well I have sensitive skin and I didn't wash the damn thing first. I woke up with HIVES!!! My neck and arms (anything my t-shirt wasn't covering) and even my shoulders (I guess since the fabric is tighter to your skin), my left eye is almost swollen shut, and I am nauseaus. I took a shower and then some benadryl. BLECK! This has happened a several times in my life...bubble bath, new black clothes, and the last time it was Aussie shampoo. My eyes were swollen shut and My face was all puffy. This SUCKS!!! WHAAAAAAA!

Sooo That means I will be having a6 month old Newfie, a Golden, and Mr Beau (the saint mix) staying here a few days. :) i'll make sure to get pics of Beau this time.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / snow!!! How do you do it!!!
« on: December 04, 2007, 07:10:37 pm »
OK, we got like 5 inches of snow over night (and still falling). I took the dogs out to see what they would do (Morgayne and Gracies first time to see snow). They all had a BLAST!!! They ran and played and wrestled.  Morgayne was even laying in it and rolling on her back. They stayed out about an hour, and when we went to come inside, the wiped the danes off no big deal (I am use to that having had danes for 11 years) but then came Morgayne.... the snow was stuck everywhere!!! her paws had golfball sized snowballs in them! it took 20 min. just to get the clumps off so she could go in by the fire and dry out. How in the heck do those of you with Newfies, saints, etc do it?? LMAO

Group Discussions & Photos / the mouths have done it again
« on: December 03, 2007, 09:24:58 pm »
Why why why...These pups have been so good. They don't chew furniture, clohthes, shoes etc. But they eat anything that looks like food. Over Thanksgiving weekend, my neighbor apparently threw the turkey bones outside, my JRT brought a big leg bone home. I took it and wrapped it in plastic and put it in the bottom of the trash. Well...someone got it out and ate it!!! I kept a close eye on them and no one got sick, thank-god. Then Thorn my 8 yr. old dane snuck a bag of candy bars!!! while we slept, he got into Kellyns school fundraiser bars. He ruined 12 bars but when I actually looked through the mess he only ate about 5-6 (the peanut butter ones) He NEVER gets into stuff (he didn't get sick from it either, not even direah)
So my newest issue is that the girls got a bag of walnuts off the counter. They are in shell (I get them for my birds). Anyway I caught them in the act, and took them away, I put EVERYTHING in cabinets now. Well yesterday I bought another bag of nuts. I stepped outside a second, and they had them down when I came in. So in the cabinet they went. Little did I know that my husband had found and relocated a bag of Macedamia and brazil nuts. When I walked in the kitchen they were EVERYWHERE!!! Morgayne and Gracie had cracked them and eaten some of them!!! I read that mac. nuts can be toxic to dogs...can cause nerological issues, and that in a study, the problems were temporary... so I am watching closely. Gracie threw up this morning, and she had actually swallowed a whole one!!! They are playing and acting "normal" today so far, and pooping normal. I threw the mac. nuts away (and the trash got picked up today so they are gone). These 2 are going to be the death of me!!! Someone on another board suggested crating them, but I dod not have the room for a crate (or 2) that would fit 2 almost grown huge pups in. And most of these issues happen when we are here and we turn our backs for a second. I am just going to have to be more diligent in hiding anything and everything that resembles food I guess.

Great Dane Pictures / My Gracie is famous. :)
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:32:29 pm »
LOL We went to the local town tree-lighting last night. I decided to take Gracie, dressed in full danedeer gear. i made her some "pawcuffs" and even sewed bells on them, she jingled with every step. The other dogs would have freaked, but since she is deaf, she didn't care at all. She had Thorns red coat that I made on and her antlers. I even painted her toes red (see photo). Anyway a lady from the local paper loved her and wanted a photo for the paper. So I let Kellyn hold her leash and take the pic. with her. It's funny we always seem to be in the right place. Last winter we were walking to our car after dinner, and a Columbus news reporter interviewed my daughter and I about a storm that was coming. LOL

Mixed Breed Discussion / For those that remember Beau...
« on: November 25, 2007, 09:33:48 am »
finally I went to visit him! Short re-cap...I rescued Beau from the local pound. he was going to be PTS because he had heartworm. He is a 2 year old Saint mix. Anyway many kind folks here donated to help with his treatments. After several months of searching for his "forever home" My mother-in-law was visiting and Beau and her Newfie pup were like best buddies, he went home to 17 acres in Kentucky.

We went there over the wekend, I wondered if he would even know me. Well he was all over me. He was my lapdog all weekend, he tried to sleep in bed with me!!!! She said he NEVER gets on the furniture, she was shocked at how glued to me he was. Unfortunatly I forgot the camera, he looks great other than he likes to play in the burrs. I brushed him about 4 times, and every time he went out he brought more in. LOL And it was so cute to see him, the Newfie (Hagrid) and her Golden (Opie) wrestling all over the house and yard. He is so happy. he did however get in my van several times, and finally after saying my goodbyes, we got in the van to leave, and he followed us all down the drive!!! I was a wreck, honestly when he was here I didn't think he gave 2 craps about me, but man was I wrong. I wish it wasn't a 4 1/2 hour drive, I want to see him more often. :(

Collars, crates, & other cool things / My newest sculpt, my Tisha
« on: November 14, 2007, 11:37:37 pm »
As most of you know I lost Tisha this past father's day after 11 years. A few people on here have bought sculpts from me. I wanted to do one of Tisha for a long time now, but I was afraid it wouldn't look right. Finally I decided to try. She loved to lay on her back and chew her fav. squeaky toy. So I went with that 'pose'

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / What the heck can I do about this?????
« on: November 07, 2007, 03:15:44 pm »
I am so mad I am shaking. Several weeks ago, my a-hole neighbor shot our little dog, Dixie. She got out of the house and apparently got in his trash. He shot her with a pellet/air riffle type gun. It was hard enough to make a puncture hole in her side. At first I didn't know what had happened to her, and his 11 year old daughter told me. We are supposed to be neighbors, I let his freakin 6 kids come over here and use are kids outdoor toys since he won't get them any. I take the 11 year old shopping with us and out to eat, to football games etc.
His 13 year old daughters cat got hit by a car a few months back. I saw it happen and we searched for her with him and found her dead. My husband put her in a bag and burried her for him.
After that his 13 year old daughter started buying cat food with her own money and coaxing my 3 cats to theri house and fed them daily. Well he just got her a kitten, and so she stopped feeding my cats, but still calls them over to pet them. 5 days ago our kitten came up missing...toda y his daughter said he pumped the gun atleast 10 times and shot her and she screamed and ran to the woods...I am sure she is dead.

He also has 3 trash cans with NO lids, and big holes split in the sides, raccoons get in them all the time. That causes more and more coons to come around, they wreck our deck nightly because of this. He started shooting them instead of getting better trash cans. We found baby coons half dead in OUR drivway over the summer and had to put them down!!!

He also has them throw all their food waste in the ditch across the road. My dogs saw it once, and now I can't even take them out without one of them trying to sneak off to eat whatever (chicken bones, rotten meat....) Plus being right by the road they could get hit. Why in the heck did I move out and buy 5 acres so that I can have an a$$ right next door. What can I do????

On a side note, he is an alcoholic, he has 2 kids and 4 step-kids. He took all the kids clothes away for the last week because they didn't put them away properly...the y have been wearing the same clothes for a week to school. I may call childrens services if their is no other option.

OK, so I posted a picture of a coat I made for Gracie last week. I have had several people ask me to make them coats for their Big dogs (mostly Danes. I made a new pattern that is a bigger coat, it extends all the way back to the tail. It closes in the front with heavy velcro, and around the chest also. It is made with durable fabric (faux suede upholstry fabric) and fleece type inside material. I am trying to decided what a reasonable price is for them. I know Big Paw clothes tend to be expensive...I want to charge a reasonable price, but not rip myself off in labor. What do you think????

this was the shorter "fall jacket" version:
