OK.... what did I miss ????????????

I have been away for about a month due to some personal issues and I am a little lost????????????

Anyway, I have gotten several PM requests for news on Harley. Sorry it has taken so long but here are some picts from today. They aren't great but you know how it is trying to get them to sit still and pose.

She is doing well health wise but much smaller than I expected her to be at this age. She is about 7 1/2 months and about 70lbs. She eats like a horse but she doesn't seem to be gaining  much. She is on Innova large breed puppy still, two feedings a day, total 6 cups.

What do you all think? Granted she is not a pure breed and then there was the parvo thing. Do you think the parvo thing would still be impairing her ability to absorb nutrition? Her stool tested clean in April and May. What do you think?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Tink (new doo) and Harley
« on: March 31, 2009, 01:55:39 pm »
Here you go after much adoo... Tink with her new hair doo (which I love) and Harley.

We cut her down from about 6" to 3". It is so much easier to manage. It is super thick and gorgeous. I think it looks even more lush than before.

What do you think?

Harley went to the vet Saturday. She is doing great! She is 45 lbs at 4 months and her stool sample tested negative for parvo. She gets her next booster the end of April and then she should be good to go. He doesn't think there is any danger having her around other dogs. We will test her stool again in April just to be sure.

Great News!

P.S. Tink got her new hair cut this weekend to and looks fabulous! I will try and post some picts tonight.

Discussions & Information on Grooming / Summer Hair Cuts
« on: March 25, 2009, 04:04:04 am »
Well, I haven't decided but was thinking about giving Tink a Summer hair cut.

Her coat is about 5" - 6" and I was thinking about cutting her down to about 2" - 3" for the summer, shaving her belly and between her toes of course too. She loves to swim and this spring has been so wet, she is already been a muddy mess and it takes hours to clean her up.

Any comments or advice? I so don't want her to look like a poodle when she is done, but need something more managable this summer. She is already starting to pant excessively and I think it would be more comfortable for her too.

I know we don't have any kom owners out there, but anyone have any experience with them. If she follows true kom coats, it will continue to grow her whole life. I really don't want it any longer than it is and think it needs to be cut this summer.

Let me know what you think.

Group Discussions & Photos / Ellie picts and the new name begins
« on: March 08, 2009, 01:06:38 am »
Sorry it took so long but here are a few picts of Ellie. Tim and I agree the name just doesn't fix but we are drawing a blank as to what to name her. Ellie fits for now, but not sure if it will when she gets big. Below are a list of possibilities that did not get crossed off the list but I would like to get an id tag and start practicing her recall. We spent most of the day outside together and she follows Tink around like she is her mom, it was so cute. Tink even surrender her dog bed to her for a nap.(see below). She kept bringing Ellie toys trying to get her to play but she was tooo pooped to play. She is small for her litter, the runt at 40 lbs, her big brother was 50+ and the rest fell in between. From what I gather their mother was a saint, less than a year old and she had 6 pups total. The were all locked in a 8x8 shed and fed once a day. It was a survival of the fitest, so she probably didn't always get her share. She has some big paws though so I am sure she will fill them out. She is calm, docile and just adorable. Her hair is super thick, wavy and feels like rabbit fur. Any suggestions on names would be appreciated. Here is what we have so far. I want something cute that fits her personaliy, but not too froo froo and is easy to recall. One or two syllables.

Shy - because she is so shy, but that is chaning rapidly
Cinders - because of her coloring and my best friend Cinda
Destin - one of our favorite places to vacation
Marley - I love it, it fits, but will soon be over done
Annie - for little orphan
Zoe - but Tim hates it
Ellie - because it fits for now

Tim finally agreed our house was ready for another big paw. I have been looking on Petfinder and other local shelters and haven't found anything yet. A lot of the rescue groups won't adopt to me because I don't have a completely fenced in yard, even though I have the acreage. I understand why they do this, but I think they should at least come out and see the place. So, this limits my options considerably to Humane Societies and Volunteer Shelters. If any of you hear of something in my area (Southern Ohio) let me know. Tink cannot wait for a new brother or sister. Her new sibling will have to accept her as queen of the castle (she is a dominant girl)and must like cats, but other than that I am pretty open. They would need to meet the energy level and temperment of my big girl. Tim would prefer a pup, but I would prefer a young adult dog. Anyway, wish me luck, we are taking our time and want to find the right dog. I will keep you posted.

P.S. I have an email into a girl who is trying to rehome her 4 year old Great Dane. I will let you know how it goes.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Help with Tink's paw
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:45:04 am »
Tink has chewed all the fur off of one of her front paws. It is normally about 3 inches long and last night when I came home it was almost bare. This is the second time she has done this (the other paw last time).

I don't think it is itchy from dry skin. I give her fish oil supplements with her food and she doesn't seem to be "itchy". I checked her paw and it is not red or irritated.

Anyone experience this before? I am at a lost for why she did this. She looks like one of those parrots with anxiety issues that nip themselves bald (just on her foot though).

I put some bitter orange on it to discourage her from chewing but I just can't figure out why?

I gave her a peanut butter kong a few days ago and my husband said "maybe she had peanut butter in her fur", he was serious, but I don't think she would have chewed it bare.

I take her to the groomer once a month, for a bath if nothing else but she wasn't matted so that can't be it.

Again, I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Mixed Breed Pictures / Tink is famous!

My dog trainer taped one of our sessions a few months back and I thought you might want to see Tink in action. He is going to post it on his website on the internet.

I am so proud of her! She was only 10 months old in this video and had never done this exercise with the chair before. She is so smart and these things seem to come so easily for her. She is the only one standing because she doesn't fit in the chair. It is a 6 min clip of an hour class and she held her position each time.

She's so good! I just had to brag. All the other dogs range from 4-6 years. They are all therapy certified and the two german shephards are scent tracking search and resuce dogs. I think Tink held her own quite well. I have decided to give her a few more months before starting a therapy class with her. there is still soooo much puppy in her. I thought I would let her mature a little more. I think she will take to it naturally though when the time comes.

Anyway, enjoy!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Tink went camping!
« on: November 24, 2008, 06:15:23 am »
We went camping with friends to Hocking Hills (OH) with friends for the Michigan vs Ohio State game. (annual tradition) We then had a giant "Friends Thanksgiving" feast all cooked outside. This was the coldest year yet. High 17 in the evening and high 32 during the day. Tink did great. I forgot her leash, so she was off leash the entire time and responded to my commands with out much hesitation. Our obedience training has really paid off. There were kids from toddlers to teens and she was great with all of them and didn't jump up on them or steal their food. She was accomanied by one jack russel, one yorkie and a six month old boxer (all on leash or stuck in the campers) It is amazing see all her hard work put to use. She is such a smart girl and not even a year old yet! I am so proud of her I just had to share. Here are a few picts.

Mixed Breed Pictures / Tinks Picts
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:18:32 am »
I just wanted to show everyone how much Tink has grown and changed color. She started out black with four white toes and is now more of a Russian Blue (like the cat, which is weird)They told me at the shelter she was a black lab/komondor mix. She has changed colors drastically and is only 10 months old. Some of her roots are coming back in black though. Has anyone had this kind of drastic color change in their pups? When should her color stabilize? Your guess is as good as mine! She goes to the groomer for a spa day on Friday. I will try and post more picts after. I have to get a good one for our BPO Christmas Cards before she gets dirty again.lol!

I need your help. My friend is helping her sister make a decision on whether to put her big paw to sleep. He is 13 and has suffered a severe stroke. He is back home and can walk but is very weak and may have a type of Chrone's disease??????? I remember reading a post here that had a "list of things to consider" when deciding "when is it time". Does anyone remember the post or have any info. She could really use some help and I would appreciate any info you could give.

Does anyone have a favorite chew/tug toy that will really last?

Tink destroys everything I give her in a matter of minutes. She went through 3 tennis balls yesterday. She can shred a rope in minutes. When she does I find most of it in the yard. It looks like she pooped out a half dozen socks. So I am afraid to buy them for her anymore. I bought some of the bully sticks and again it was gone in minutes. She actually goes up to our willow tree out front (about 30' tall) grabs a branch and "Shakes the tree" until something falls loose and she takes off with it into the shade to chew on it.She is only 6 months old. Lord help the landscaping!

She is real good about leaving our shoes and stuff alone, but if I don't find something else she can chew that will entertain her I am afraid we will all go barefoot!lol

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
