Newfoundland Discussions / Water Dog training update
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:49:42 am »
Sadie went to her first official day of WD training and it went very well.  Thought you guys might want to check out a couple of videos to see what she's learning to do.

Sadie starts her official water training tomorrow with our breed club. She can do most of the required skills at home (finally picked up a boat cushion and brought it to Daddy today).  No idea how she'll do in the training environment though.  This isn't like training at our obedience club!

Water training will be our most ambitious project to date and we could use some good BPO vibes to help us get started!

Just a little something to inspire you!  (might want to turn your volume off first though!)

Mr Fargo (now 10 months old and still intact) has suddenly decided that he's the man and that he no longer has to do what he's told and it's really wearing thin!  It's not horrible but still bad enough that I took him back to a basic obedience class.  Frankly, that's been a disaster.  He won't sit.  He lies down and won't get up.  He basically drags along through the class like he's on a death march.

I know that some of this behavior is to be expected due to his age but I need advice on keeping him in line until his hormones level out.

We took Ursa out for her first real swim today.  She wasn't as enthusiastic as the Newfs and needed a little more support but she did it!  I just love this dog.  There's nothing that she won't try!

You do realize that "rare white Newf" thing is a joke right?

We took Fargo and Sadie down to the lake today for their first swim lessons with their new life vests.

Oh my gosh!  I CAN swim!!!

We had our first TX Newf get together today - it's something we plan on doing on a monthly basis.  One of our friends very graciously hosted it at her home.

Fargo hopped in the pool almost as soon as we arrived:

Fargo and Sadie had their CGC tests today and both passed with flying colors!

Fargo was exhausted after all of that work...

Sadie wasn't all that impressed with the headgear...

Relaxing on the way home...

Everyone had cookies to celebrate!

I know that you can use green beans to increase the quantity of food while cutting calories but is there anything else you all recommend?  Carrots are out as I have some carrots haters here.

Fargo is 8.5 months old now and has suddenly had the hormone surge from h*ll!  He is in constant motion, into everything, has forgotten all of his manners and is generally making a nuisance of himself.

I knew this would come and I know it'll get worse before it gets better.  Any advice on dealing with it and on keeping him on a more or less even keel?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Training Snobs Rant
« on: March 24, 2009, 12:58:33 pm »
I am SO sick of people judging me and my dogs because they did their basic level training at PetsMart!   >:(

We've had more than one person from our breed group give us "the look" when we tell them where we train.  Today, we talked to a new trainer recommended by this group about her classes.  What's the first thing she mentions?  That she'd heard we trained at PetsMart - and by her tone I could tell she thinks we're idiots and our dogs are probably ill mannered brats!   >:(  Two guesses who thought that was pertinent info - the woman who gave us this trainer's name. Her classes sound like a good choice for our 3 but now I have doubts about signing up for them.

I know I don't have to justify myself to my fellow BPO'ers but when we started out I had no idea that we'd actually enjoy training or be good enough to want to keep going after puppy class.  I needed a class that was close and convenient and with a trainer who liked big paws.  I got all of that and more.  Our trainer (who has a degree in Behavioral Analysis btw) is now a friend and I don't regret taking her classes for one second.  My dogs ARE NOT second class citizens!!

(thanks - feel better getting that off my chest)

Holiday Things / Easter Parade ideas needed!!
« on: March 23, 2009, 02:22:43 pm »
We're just starting up a social group for our Newfs and their friends and our first event is going to be the Easter Parade.  I need ideas on how to decorate a Newf cart (in this case a team cart so it's the approximate size of a kids red wagon) and on costumes for Fargo, Ursa and Sadie.

I'm not normally a dog costume person so I stink at these things but it's important that everyone get totally into the spirit here since it's our first event.

Help!!
