Newfoundland Discussions / Book with a Newfie
« on: December 04, 2005, 10:08:12 pm »
Hi, I'm a stalker here, non-big dog owner, but big dog (especially Newfie) lover.  I came across a book at the library the other day and instantly thought that some other big dog lovers might find it interesting.  Some I'm temporarily creeping out of my spooky stalker closet to post, ha ha!

I like to read but get bored easily with reading the same genre of books over and over so I typically look through the "new books" section at the library and pick a variety of topics.  I found this book called "You Slay Me" by Kate MacAlister.  Okay it's not a life changing, emotion wrenching book but I found it entertaining.  About a woman who mistakenly happens upon her natural born powers to summon demons and such.  Mix of mystery, romance, middle ages dragons-wiccan-demons, humor.  Real bonus, she summons her first ever "demon" and gets a big slobering newfie who can talk and has a love affair with a Welch Corgi!

Not that I think Newfies are any type of demon I just read the back cover, saw the mention of a Newfoundland and had to read it!

Just thought I'd share!

Marit,

This is not dog related but you should have your dd's breath evaluated by physician.  Possibly some throat, addenoids (sp?), tonsils, sinus problems.  I know several families who had younger children (8 to 10 year range) with serious halitosis which was cured after having tonsils and/or addenoids removed.  Another child I know had a sinus infection that caused some pretty bad breath for several years.  Worth looking into.  It must stink (pardon the pun) being a teenager with 1 more thing to be self conscious about!

Jessica

Jen I am glad you finally managed to get rid of the worst of the smell, when grooming I from time to time did some serious noseholding, especially the dogs that came to me from the shelter for a "make over" to look pretty and have a bigger chance of being adopted.

Tom..... Please stay on this board, we need a dentist lol  ;D Having said that, I feel my pulse going a bit, because my daughter Malin (ouch..... I sooooo hope she is not reading this) has a problem breath. We have been to the dentist here several times. All he says is that there is no problem with her teeth, he has never mentioned the oxy product at all. She has brushed her tongue, uses mouth wash, brushes her teeth like 6 times a day and would never leave the house without mints or something to take if she thinks it is "hitting her" when she is out. It is bad to be 13 and work like crazy to make your breath not smell and now when I know there might be something that can help I am a bit upset with our dentist  :-\

Thanks for the tips Tom, I will absolutely try and find it. hmmmm you never thought BPO would grab hold of you and make you the official BPO dentist did you?  ;D

I had an encounter several years ago when I was walking with my beagle.  A rottie attacker her.  She had several stitches in the neck.  I was freakin' and screaming.  Now our town seems to be overrun by Boxers.  There's a breeder in town I think. I can name about 5 houses in our small town that have boxers, two that are often out loose in their yard.   Last Monday I was running, dogless, and two boxers came out into the road towards me.  At first I was like, "Oh they'll stop."  Then I realized they were on a dead run and looking pretty feirce.  When they got quite close I let out a pretty good scream and they stopped and just barked and watched me walk past.  I was pretty scared.  I made hubby run with me tonight, so they'd bite him first!  I'm thinking about calling Aminal Control.  Also about getting some pepper spray.  I was wondering if anyone knew legally when it's okay to use something like pepper spray on someone's dog.  I'm afraid I spray a dog and then some owner would try to send me a vet bill.  I mean do I actually have to let it bite me or my dog before I can "use force".  Or as long as the dog is outside it's yard and I feel in danger, then can I?  I need to decide which type of big dog to adopt, since my Copper is getter too old to run, so at least I have some "intimidation" on my side when I'm out and about.

Well we dont have a newf but we have a saint.People are always saying "boy you must have a big house?"Why would they think that?I dont go up to my husband who weighs a solid 210 "boy honey time for you to move out.Our house is too small for you."In this case I dont think size matters,so get what you want, life is short.

That's hillarious.  I'm a first time poster to BPO, but been "stalking for a few days."  I've been wanting a newfie for a few years.  Just recently applied to the rescue list of the Great Lakes Newf Club.  When I talk about wanting a Newf ,friends and family often say," Your house isn't big enough!"  Now, a have a great comeback!  Hubby outweighs the average newf and he fits just fine in our house!  HaHa.  I read the post last night and have already used the line twice today.  Thanks!  Jessica
