Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Question for Saint owners
« on: June 06, 2006, 02:13:32 pm »
My Maxwell is going on two now and his personality is changing a bit.  He is not aloof when it comes to strangers.  The moment someone comes in the house he is on them right away.  He really wants to be petted by everyone and is actually getting a little mouthy.  He mouths peoples hands but never bites but people who don't know him gets scared that he'll bite!!  It's really becoming a problem.  I'm not sure on how to get him to stop mouthing.

Hi there.  Don't know if it's too late or not but I went to a groomer and they refused to shave him.  They siad the coat was insulation as well.  They recommend blasting.  It is a reverse vacuum cleaner so to speak and all of the undercoat gets blown off.  He came back with a nice thin coat for the summer.  It was still long and looked good but it's a lot cooler for them.  I agree with now getting the haircut at the vet.  That would probably cost more and don't they put them to sleep for the hair cut?  I tried to get my cat shaved at the vet and they said they would put her to sleep for the cut.  (She was a stray that I found and she was covered in mats when I caught her.)

I personally think he looks fine!  Maxwell was tall and lanky as a teenager and now he's a bohemuth. Bubba looks perfectly normal to me.  Max stopped growing in height and now he's spreading out but I'm trying to keep it under control.  I have him on Wholesolme Blend Senior Large Breed.  The pet nutricionist I spoke with recommended that he go on a senior diet as it is less calories and has more glucosamine and other good things in it.  Poor Maxwell, not even two and already a senior!!

I must say.  Maxwell was EXTREMELY hard to house train!!  I had HUGE puddles of pee in my home.  At seven months he all of a sudden just stopped peeing in the house.  Something clicked in his head and since then he's had no problems.  Max can hold his bladder for at least ten hours and even after that we still have to offer for him to go out for a pee.  My cocker spaniel was completely house trained by 12 weeks!!  Max just seemed to either learn slower or perhaps his bladder had to catch up to the rest of his body.  Don't worry, be patient and make sure you clean your floors with a proper pet stain remover.  No regular floor cleaner will do.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Are Saints vocal?
« on: May 07, 2006, 03:03:28 am »
I heard that Saints don't bark and I read that they are high up on the list as worst breeds for watch dogs but I beg to differ. My Maxwell barks at anyone who puts one toe in our yard.  I bought a harmonica and he howls along with each note I play.  It was so funny!!  As soon as I start playing he groans and howls.  (What a critic!)

I recently found the best ever drool remover.  Mr. Clean magic erasers!!!  I had drool all over the place.  Those erasers work really well!!

Maxwell used to squat too much and then he would end up peeing on his front legs.  Gross.  As for his penis, it used to do that but not anymore. Fixing must help.  He was super slow to potty train.  7 long months!!!

I feed Maxwell raw broccolli, carrots, cooked meats and sometimes a bowl of stew here and there.  At christmas he gets turkey and gravy.  Don't feed the dog potatoes or onions or any cooked bones of any kind.

Thanks!  I feel the same way.  I don't think he looks too fat at all but the vet said you couldn't feel his ribs easy enough??  Everyone else I run into says he looks like he needs to fill in more??  I'm not sure if you are supposed to feel a Saints ribs that much?  Can you feel Bear's ribs easily?  This is my first Saint and there are only a handful in my province to compare to.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Bark Control Collar???

I would return the one he bought and get the citronella one.  I feel that if you wouldn't  do something to your own child, don't do it to your dog.  I also read once (this is strictly a myth but I thought it was cool.) that dogs are very sensitive to the afterlife world and when they bark for nothing, they are scaring away evit spirits.  The myth goes on to say that you should never stop your dog from barking as he may be scaring death away.  Saint Bernards are said to have a heightened sixth sense which is why they were so successful as rescue dogs because they sense when someone's in trouble and can sense upcoming storms and avalanches.  Maxwell can do his fair share of barking but I ignore it totally and don't even scold him.  He's just protecting us and his house and I think it's kinda cool.   We always get bothered by travelling salesmen trying to sell us security systems.  (at least twice a year.) and when they see Maxwell, they give up??  No alarm in the world could top him!!  No prowler in their right mind would break into our house!!  Ha Ha!!

Hi everybody!  Maxwell is still gowing at 18 months old!  His bones are getting thicker and he's getting a little tubby.  My vet said he's a bit fat....Can you guys easily feel your dogs ribs?  We cut his food back a bit and are exercising him more.  One big thing that happened is that he was in a Christmas parade!!!  He was excited and hard to handle at first but he came around.  He's pretty darn strong and could easily pull me around if he wants to but he wasn't too bad.  There were thousands of people screaming Beethoven!!  The kids love him and the parents seemed to like him a lot too.  I can't get over how many people ask me if he's a newf?  Unfortunately we are putting him in a doggy resort for Christmas  :'(  We go to my Mom's every year for Christmas and this year I decided to give her a break from Maxwell.  She's not scared of him but this whole menopause thing is totally stressing her out and she doesn't need the added stress.  It's supposedly a five star pet resort.  At night he will sleep in a 4' by 8' room with in floor heating and during the day he plays with the other dogs all of the time.  I'm sure he'll love it but we haven't spent one night with out him since the day we got him!!!  I'll miss the huge lump in my bed!!  It's getting tight in our Queen size bed.  Me Hubby, my cocker, my cat and now Maxwell!!!  We're like sardines!!  Well, here's some shots of him now.  Enjoy.

Thank God.  It looked so painful.  Poor little dude.

Maxwell did meet his brothers.  You can kind of see him in the back of the guy with the yellow shirt on.  Couldn't fit all three in the same photo.  We really wanted photos of just the brothers.  They have the same Mom and Dad.  The three do all look a lot alike besides the size thing.  They are all pretty mellow.  There was a 4th saint at the show.  Unrelated.  His name was gus and we didn't get a shot of him but we did get him on video.  He was 6 years old and he comes from the Vendemeer Saints in Ontario.  The lady who owned Gus said our boys had really good temperaments.  Gus has his papers and is registered.  Our three boys are not.  Gus was really big boned and quite a bit shorter then ours.  I believe our boys parents are from Quebec.  I know their mom was for sure because that's what the breeder told me.  When we picked up little Maxwell we were so excited that we didn't ask enough questions.  Talk about adrenaline rush.  That was a super happy day for sure.  He was such a sweet puppy.

I got Maxwell fixed at 5 months and he barely had any swelling and certainly no discoloration like that.  I feel so bad for Judge.  I'm glad he's off to the vet.  If it were me I would get him checked out at a different vet.  Second opinions are great.  I hope we here from coonie soon!!!

I was very consistent with Maxwell and he still took 7 full months to completely house train.  Now he can hold it for 10-12 hours easy.  No water after 7 or so I would say.  If Fin is playing give him a bit and then put him out before bed time.  Also very important is cleaning with pet stain remover and not regular household cleaner.  It might take 7 months for Fin to get the point.  My cocker was completely house trained by 11 weeks old.  Quite a difference in breeds!!!
