A friend down the block has wireless sensors for his alarm system on his windows, doors, and back shed. Don't know if that's an option for you, depends on the alarm company your with.

At 13 Lucy weighs 75 pounds give or take a bit. Never measured her, but she fits in a lap just fine. Ask her, she'll show ya............ ..

I'm very pleased to hear everbodies dog is OK but this is still very worrisome, I'd feel much better about the whole thing if all those Bad Bad chocolate chip cookies were gathered up and sent over here straight away. I'll take full responsiblity for seeing to it that no dogs will ever be put at risk by those cookies again......... ......

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Need help with Satin Balls!

Mutt and Lucy both love them. We roll them up about the size of a baseball, they get to share one every morning. Mutt gets about a tablespoon (he doesn't need any at all but feels left out if he doesn't get his share) Lucy gets the rest

It seems to me the recipe I got last summer was longer........ ...... had kelp and some other stuff......... ....... Try checking the "Skinny Old Dane Needs Help" thread.

Just to prove she's picked up a couple pounds here's a New Years pic

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Lucy's Toenails..................

I'll get some recent Lucy pics up soon, and a few of the warehouse thats been keeping us so busy lately........ ..

Guess we'll try bringing the epsom salt-tea tree oil soaks up to a daily routine, this is going to be popular. Lucy likes having her foot in a soaking bath just a little better than "the dreaded cone".

I'll also check in with the local feed stores about "hoof conditioner", and we'll try sanding instead of clipping net time. Not sure I can get close with a dremel, Lucy's become very skittish about noises, but we'll figure something out.

Thanks much,

Gene

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Lucy's Toenails..................
« on: November 17, 2005, 02:59:26 am »
Lucy's doing pretty well lately, gained a couple pounds (many thanks to those that helped out on the satin balls).  I have another question...is anyone familiar with toenails that break off to the quick?  One of Lucy's back paws is continually breaking toenails.  They bleed, are very painfull, and are very slow to heal.  The vet thought perhaps a fungal infection and last year the antifungal cream worked well but, this year it has not helped.  We have started with Tea tree oil.  Any suggestions?  Any doggie sandles available?

Meet & Greet BPOers / Re: Anyone In Portland, OR?

Nikki, Lucy, Mutt and I live close-in NE (near 15th and Freemont) with a school yard across the street. There's a big dog gathering nightly or, if anyones up for a play day I'll make coffee (maybe bake something). We've thought it would be fun to do a regular weekend brunch for big dogs, small dogs with attitude, and their people.

Lucy's reached the age (12 1/2+) she often needs to go out during the night. Sometimes she gets me up to adjust her bedding or cover her back up. Other time she'll try to sneak up on the bed, "Nobody'd notice a little bity Great Dane inching her way up the middle!".

I'm getting the impression insomnia is a common thing for danes. Show of hands?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: No one is spoiled at my house

My only digital spoiled dog pics are of Mutt. Lucy's most extreme spoilage happens at my Mom's house though. Nobody spoils kids (2 or 4 legged) like grandma!

Besides drive-thu's, the Snap-On tool guy in my old neighborhood used to keep treats in the tool truck. Then a couple of the UPS drivers started carrying biscuits. Lucy got the idea that all step-vans had dog treats as standard equiptment. We were doing an off leash lap 'round the 'hood one day, she was about 20 feet in front and there was a delivery truck with the door open and the driver sorting packages in the back. Lucy hopped up and was right behind the guy when he turned around, scared the beejeezus out of him. I explained very quickly, he had a sense of humor, but no treats........ ..

well, that didnt last too long thay have eaten the coolaroo's. Big hole in the middle of one and Thor's working on another. Anymore ideas?

I'd send Lucy's crib matress bed, but shipping would be vicsious. She's only sleeping on the coolaroo now, prefers outside even at night.

If you have a goodwill or some such you can probaly find a good innerspring crib matress. After you glue on the orthopedic foam wrap the whole works in balistic nylon or kevlar cloth or something similar. That oughtta fix 'em............ .....

Mixed Breed Discussion / Re: Please help!

That would be the thread I started for Lucy a few weeks ago. It's in Great Dane discussions, forgot the title but heres the link to the recipe,

http://www.njboxers.com/satin-balls-recipe.htm.

We're feeding them to Lucy and Mutt both as Lucy needs to gain weight and Mutt has taken to snubbing his kibble. Haven't seen the dramatic results hoped for on Lucys weight, but they do seem very effective at stimulating their appetites. Both dogs are eating well, so now we feed and wait.

More reasons to support local community radio and avoid Clear Channel and their clones. A Portland station with a similar format has pulled a variety of bone-head stunts only the local losers prefer to pick on a particular mentally dissabled fan. Real Class! If you don't sell them your ears they go out of business. If you don't have a local public or community radio station you can get some really good stations on-line.

Contact your local Audubon Society.

You will not go to h*ll. But far worse than a mythological place of eternal torment YOU WILL suffer a plague of Mosquitos and Biting Flys. Do you know how many bugs those critters eat each night!?! Best pest control you could have. Save the Bat, and put up some bat shelters too, you'll be glad you did.
