Medical Conditions & Diseases / Limping on front leg
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:44:38 am »
Our boy Max started limping on his front left leg this weekend.  The limping wasn't noticeable at first.  Rather, I first thought something was wrong because he was walking like a chicken (bobbing his head up and down).

We checked his paw and found nothing.  Same for his nails.  We also moved his leg back and forth and got no reaction.

Our Saturday wasn't anything beyond normal.  Just a walk and some inside/outside playtime.

Our plan is to take it easy for the next week or so until the limping stops.  If it continues, we're going to the vet (Even though I say I'm going to wait a week, I probably won't be able to go past Wednesday).

Any ideas of what to check in the meantime?

Welcome, Shaggy is adorable.  :-*

We have our saint Max, now 22 months old, on Cosequin (which has glucosamine and chondroitin).  We have never tried fish oil...I might give it a try.

A bit off topic...but I have to say I love your new avatar, PennyK!

Funny story.  :D

The stopping repeatedly in the middle of a walk happened to us when we adopted our Max at about five months too.  We didn't know when, where, how often, and for how long it would happen.  Luckily at that age, we could still pick him up and carry him short distances.  However, it's not fun trying to coax a dog up (sometimes unsuccessfully) who has planted themselves in the middle of a parking lot.

I think for Max the laying down was a combination of a battle of wills and fear.  Maybe the same for you?

Best thing for us was a pinch collar and training.

Can you pm me the info on the newf?  Thanks!

$27.95/6 mo. for 51-100 lbs. beats the best price I found by a dollar.

So, looks good to me.

Oh my word...it makes me want to run out and get Max a little sister.  :D  Your kids look so adorable!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as well.
Even though you trust your normal vet, there's absolutely no harm in getting a second opinion.

My fingers are crossed (many times over).  A small part of me has hope that he won't need surgery.  However, the realistic and worrying parts of me are speaking louder.

The day after the vet visit, all I wanted to do was stay at home from work and read everything I could about ACL injuries.  Something that helped is that I found a really good yahoo group/messageboard (orthodogs) that helped provide information on types of surgery and recommendation s for doctors in the area.  If anyone is going through the same thing, I'd really recommend it.

No, unfortunately the vet didn't give us any restrictions this time...I'm guessing we should just use common sense (i.e. no dog park).

We may have found the reason for his reaction...
We went back to the vet this past Monday.  It's been a month and a half since his knee injury at the park and his knee is still swollen.  The vet believes Max has a partially torn ACL.  We are going to a specialist next week for a consultation, but we are preparing ourselves for Max to have TPLO surgery.  :(

Oh my word...she is adorable!  Strange how the right thing can come along without even expecting it.  Best of luck and congrats!  :D

I'm also familiar with the "play with me bow".

I think sometimes a combination of the size and energy of our dogs can bring out the worst in other dogs.   I've noticed that in the past when we've taken Max on walks or to the dog park, another dog will not respond well to Max's jumpy excitement and they will snarl at him.  Their owner then usually responds with "Sorry, he/she is never like that."

I'd bet Bubba would learn more on how to act when another dog joins the family.  We also have an "only child" and ours has probably missed out on some of the learning opportunities he would have in a multi-dog family.

Welcome to the site!  I'm more of a lurker than a poster...but I absolutely love this site.  It makes me feel more normal.  ;)

We also have a saint, 17 month old, Max.

As you can tell from the other posts, we can never get enough photos.

P.S. Yaz, I like your new avatar.
