thats true...but unfortunatly Crystal is 10 yrs old blind and has hip displasysia... .and their dog Moe (american Eski) is 14 and set in his ways....they don't play much with Zach...they kind of just put up with him.... :-\

luckily I am working at a doggie daycare so he gets to go play with tons of dogs a couple times a week he has a ball and comes home and passes out.... ;D

Akita Discussions / Re: Akita temperment
« on: April 22, 2005, 05:40:53 pm »
My brother in law has an Akita as well as a beagle, a shepherd mix, 3 cats and a brand new daughter....th eir Akita is very loving, protective but friendly....I have seen this dog in action...when we went to visit and we brought our dog along there were no problems...sam e with when we got together with a group of people to go to the park...again.. .no problems.....

in response to the not letting the dog off leash with other dogs or animals....thi s is true of all dogs....until they have been properly introduced you should never leave your dog off lead with anyone or anything...you never know what the reation will be...as far as Akita's being a dominant dog....you can not classify a whole breed as dominant....on ly individual dogs....it all depends on the breeding...eac h dog can be tempermant tested when they are young....

The Akita has a good temperment...a round other dogs, children and even other pets....they will protect the family if they feel there is a threat by both animal and human...they are devoted to their family and very loyal....they are calm and collected unless provoked....

this is the standard for the Akita....altho ugh all breeds have stories of bad temperment.... it is all in the breeding and background...r esearch before you buy...if your dog comes form good stock and lineage...you will have a devoted, lovable, teddy bear that will let strangers know he is watching them....

hope this helps...

Very good....helen keller was the first to bring them home to the united states...it was a gift from the emporer...year s later when her dog died...they sent another one over seas to her....

The story of the devotion is a very true story....one of my favorites too.

As far as the hostile temperment...u ntrue....they were known as protectors of children in Japan....famil ies would leave their kids in the care of the family akita...knowin g they would be safe....

pop quiz.....

Do any of you know what the original status of the Akita was in Japan?

Do you know how they came to the USA?

How about what they were good for in Japan?

I know the answers I just wanted to see if anyone else did....lol

I have to agree with you....anybody who knows how to find the AKC standards...sh ould make a list of the dog forums found here....then compare them all....if we have Shepherds, Malamutes, Curley coated Retrievers, Greyhounds, and Aussies on there...then why not Labs....They are very comparable to the above.  If they only want GIANT BREEDS....thos e shouldn't be listed either.....

Thanks Christie, I love it!  What does yours do?

Well he has this awful cute way of starting at one side of the living room and while lying on his side sliding to the other side of the living room while loudly moaning as we would during a good massage...lol

he also has the amazing talent of tripping up the steps every time he follows my daughter up to the bedroom excitedly....w ith out fail you hear him running up and then...thump, thump, thump...as his front legs miss the step and he lands on his chest....lol

and I can't forget the lovely push the button for a snack trick....my daughter has these magnets on the fridge that have buttons that when you push them the say things like circlc, 1, or A etc.....anyway ...Zach will go out to the fridge sit in front of it and repeditly hit the "circle" one over and over until my daughter gives him a bone..lol
it is actually cute that the two of them have this all worked out except that my 3 year old still has to learn that you can't give him a bone every time....he'll sit in front of the fridge pushing that button!!!!lol

I surprised my husband with "Rocko" our red merle aussie on Valentines day 5 years ago.  He was just five weeks old and so calm - that was the LAST time I could say that about him. The two are best of friends now. Rocko loves to ride in the truck and will play frisbee until he drops.  I call Rocko "My Prozac" because no matter how I'm feeling I can look at him and crack a smile!

Your prozac huh?.... ;D

That is the way I feel about my Zach....you can't help but smile when he is around...
Who needs antidepressant s?!!! :)

Thank you for Sharing

I agree with you One Hundred percent....the y are beautiful dogs with a demanding presence, gentle and loveable like a big teddy bear...lol

My brother and sister in law have a big, goofy girl named Dharma and she is the most loveable dog in the world (next to mine of course!!!!) The next breed I am looking at getting is an AKita.

Anyway thank you for your reply.
