My kids use to come get me to keep Hightower, my newfie, inside when they were on the swings.  Seems Hightower didn't like them swinging and jumping out of the swings, so he would stand in front of the swings and take direct hits to keep them from swinging too high or to keep them from jumping.  I loved it!

My first newf practically raised my four kids from the time they were aged 2-10.  (now 18-28) He watched over them, protected them and played with them.  I now have another newf and a golden retriever.   I think the goldie sheds more all the time, the newf sheds in clumps.  I vacuum every other day just to stay ahead.  The goldie is a wonderful dog.... but I had to have another newfoundland.  I just can't imagine life without one.  Like sar said.... they think, they figure things out and though they don't acually speak words, they can carry on a conversation just by motions and facial expressions.  Maybe they aren't for everyone...but those that don't have a newf are missing out on a lot.

Thanks sarnewfie.  I tried again last night, but he is just too jumpy to let me do it.  Even after a long walk, singing and wooing, etc.  I just made the appt for a Thanksgiving day grooming.  85 bucks... whoooo.  It is with the groomer that did Hightower for me when I was showing him, so I know she will do a good job.  I will just have to be even more diligent after these walks.  He runs with my goldie, but Riley never gets the sticktites like Webster does.  Thanks again for your help and suggestins.

Thanks for all your help.  I really don't like using meds.  These are just big knots matted up close and all of a sudden.  Webster gets brushed at least every other day, but he picks up lots of briars and brambles and sticktites when we walk the fields.  I guess I just missed these and they have made a mess. Patti, where would I find cowboy magic?

Webster has managed to get some good size knots of hair between his back legs in the "tender" parts.  He is NOT going to let me work on getting them out, not even with scissors.  Is benadryl a good way to may him sleepy so I can get this part of grooming accomplished.  If so, how much.  He is about 150 pounds.

Thanks everyone.  I tried a combination of all of the above and got mats out without drugs!

Dont' know if Bernies are like newfs, but my first newf took almost 3 years to get to look like newfs in all the pictures.  The first year he gained his height and looked rather leggy and lean, the second year he "filled out" and grew a great coat, the first part of the third year, his head almost doubled in size, his face filled out and he got that "definately" a newfie look. Webster seems to be following the same route.

Webster has run thru the brambles and he's run thru the bushes.  He had a great time, BUT,  Now he has massive knots from all the sticktites and briars.  I have most of them out, but cannot get the ones in his "pantaloons".  He has been very good about grooming, but just won't tolerate using a dematter or rake on that area.  Any ideas.  Would some benadryl something make him sleepy enough to "knock the edge off" so I can demat him myself?

It just so happens that I have a 12month old newf AND a 4 year old golden retriever.  Both lads have been neutered and they are good buddies. They play very well together, train well together and teach each other.  Both can be boisterous, but not for long....then they need a nap!  They are great fun to be around and entertaining to watch.  SAR you were so right, Riley the golden will do anything just to please, without my even asking!  Webster, my newf.... he will look at me and I can see him trying to "work things out", thinking that maybe there is a better way of doing something, or a way of having more fun for just a bit longer.  I KNOW he is thinking!  It's amazing to watch him figure things out when we play.

My fav story is of Hightower, my first newf when he was about 9 months old.   I had planned a dinner party for about 12 people.  Had cooked a 5-6 pound whole sirloin tip roast, twice baked potatoes, green bean casserole and cake.  I had taken everything out of the oven and put it on the stove top, then went back to get showered and dressed.  When I walked thru the den about 15 min. before company was due to arrive, I saw HT chewing on what I thought was my sons basketball and called Daniel to come get it and put it away.  I bopped on into the kitchen and immediately slipped on someything on the floor. As I lay there looking up at the ceiling, my hand touched something gooey.... a half eaten twice backed potatoe... then the light bulb went off in my head.  The "basketball" was my roast!!!  There was au jus all over the floor, only 1/2 the potatoes, less than that of the cake and the green beans were "tasted" but still intact.  I cleaned up greasy, cheesey uck for a week.  We cooked hamburgers out that night.
