I really, really, really want to add a pug puppy to our family, but how do I do that with a 160-pound Saint Bernard who's still a puppy himself (15 months old)?  I fear the pup would inadvertently get stepped on, smacked with a paw that weighs more than he does while playing, etc.

Has anyone done this successfully?  I'd sure appreciate ALL viewpoints, even if it's what I don't want to hear...

Any update?  I haven't been around to see if there've been new threads on Otis....

Let him know if you can help the pups!

P.S...did the other mastiff, Otis, ever get adopted - the one from a few weeks ago?

Crede always lays down beside the highchair because he knows Declan's going to throw/drop something!

Haha, here are two pictures of Crede's head...the first one is when we got him, the second is after he gained weight.  Wow can you see a difference in his neck and shoulders!

Some of you might remember Crede - we adopted him on November 6th and I posted here for a couple of months...then came Christmas, and visiting family, and my son Declan's first birthday...I just got busy!

But here's Crede in all his glory...he's gained A LOT of weight and is the bestestest dog I have EVER had.  We love him so much!

I just thought of something...wh at about PAWS Chicago?  Don't they do low-cost neutering too?

Kristi, I'm so excited!  And I'm glad you're really taking your time to see if Otis is a good fit for you - that shows so much responsibility and dedication on your part.  And I've found in my experience with my animals that they do adjust.  I think it's a pretty rare situation where animals simply *can't* be together.

I've emailed the vet tech I told you about and am waiting for her response.  Hopefully we'll have lots of good news today!

Good luck with the meeting!

How great that the meeting went that well!  Typically, neutering is said to reduce the urge to mark territory, and remember that he was probably very nervous also, and that would make him mark more than he normally would.  I think it's a fabulous idea to have the neutering done before he would be joining your family permanently.  Hmmm, another thing about the marking is that you don't know how many other dogs he was smelling there and felt he had the need to mark against.  If it was just him and Sampson, I'm thinking things would probably be a bit different.

Good luck!

Hi, I'm the one who originally mentioned the CL ad here on BigPaws.  These are really great people who truly love their animals like family.  I truly hope your meeting goes well tonight...I know it must be terribly difficult to do what you're doing.  We'll help you as much as we can!

Oh Kristy, I sure hope it works out tonight, and you can give him a home.  I emailed the guy too, and pressed the issue that these big paws just aren't for everyone, and that for someone unexperienced, the novelty of having a 170 pound dog could wear off.  It sounds like he took it to heart; I'm so glad!
