Well hello all.  Boo and I have been very busy and haven't been on here in forever!  Boo is doing well but we're adding a new member to our furry family tomorrow and I have lots of questions  ;D.  First off, I'm pretty sure I need to introduce them out of her territory to begin with, but what else can I do to make the transition easier for both?  Eli is a rescue and he's a Pharaoh hound mix.  He's young too, only about a year or so.  He's neutered too.  Also, what is everyone's view on finally letting Boo have run of the house during the day and leaving Eli in the crate?  Does anyone have one dog in, one dog out?

Smooshy, smooshy!! :-* :-*  Maiden is adorable.  What a baby face.  How old is she?

Hmm....let me see.  I believe she's a month or two older than Boo so maybe 18 months?  She's the funniest dog too.  The two of them will each get on an end of their rope toy and Boo will pull Maiden around.  Maiden will be on her stomach with all four legs sticking out just getting dragged around the house.  I really need to get a picture because it cracks me up every time. ;D  And believe it or not, I've actually managed to get a Halti on that smooshed mug of hers.  There isn't a body halter made that she won't pull thru.  I finally got smart and got her a Halti!!

This is DH's dog Maiden.  She's an American Bulldog/AmStaff mix.  Isn't she cute!! :D  She has the cutest little smooshy face (I smoosh it all the time!)  And she's way more my dog than his.  That's probably because I let her get away with everything!  C'mon, with a face like that how can you say no?

Hehehehehehehe ....Boo does this!  Looks at her foot like "who are you and where did you come from??"  We also get the tail chasing too.  She'll try and scratch her head with her foot while standing up, will see her tail behind her, and will proceed to try and catch it.  Its like that video of the dog on the couch and he keeps growling and attacking his leg cause he thinks its trying to get his bone.

Boo is so pretty!! I love the markings. I think it's so neat that they can have a half and half eye. I've seen the two different colored eyes before but never an eye with two colors. Until Phoebe of course. Do you find that with Boo being deaf she's more easy going around other dogs? I find Phoebe is shy and a bit of a push over, she really allows other dogs of any size to climb all over her and push her around. While she did do a puppy pounce stance once with another Dane she didn't seem to understand how to play or interact. She follows our Chihuahua around and sometimes gets frisky but that's pretty much the extent of play for her.

Boo is a brat!!  We have an American Bulldog/Amstaff mix and she's always bothering her!  The two of them go nonstop.  But then our Bully will want to stop and Boo will continue to annoy her.  She'll get a growl (not that she can hear it) and then a nip.  I have to say, that doesn't stop her really.  One of us usually has to step in and tell her "no".  And Boo pretty much likes every dog she meets.  She can be a little skittish at first, then she goes into play bow and wants to fool around.  We met a 5 yr old Great Dane where my daugther has cheerleading practice.  Boo wants to play with him sooo bad but he had growth plate problems and may have some hip issues so his mom doesn't really want him to play (which is understandable).  BTW that picture of Boo on the bed, the bed is actually a queen size bed.  It totally doesn't look like it with my giant lump of a dog on it ;D  Boo is tall but not very heavy.  I can't tell you her exact measurements for height, but she weighs in at 120 lbs at 14+ months.  Her head reaches above my waist though.

Oh Phoebe is a gorgeous merlequin!!  I have a deaf merlequin too.  I've attached pictures but I don't think you can see Boo's eyes.  She has one blue eye and one brown/green eye.  ;D

Oh Lauren, if only there was a school for our miscreant dogs ;D ;D   I was just thinking you could try throwing some pupcorn in the cage when you go to put her in.  I do this for Boo and she walks right in.  And yes, she will find more creative and interesting ways to drive you nuts!!  Sounds like she's really starting to get the hang of being a naughty teenage dog.  I sent you an e-mail yesterday too with some more tips.  Hope some of it helps.   ;)

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Deaf Danes

I'm Naomi and I have a deaf dane named Boo.  There's two other deaf danes on here that I know of also.  Speaking for Boo, the only thing special I've done for her is use a combination of ASL and "dog signs".  I never let her off lead if its not fenced in too.  Other than that, she's pretty much like any other hearing dog.  I have to touch her to get her attention if I need her, but most people when they meet her have no idea that she's deaf.  And there are times when she even seems more on "alert" than our hearing dog.  She notices things our other dog doesn't.

We were lucky with her too because she's not a dog that startles easy either.  We can go up to her and touch her back if she's turned away and she won't jump, or bark or growl.  I don't know if that's just her disposition or the fact we used to touch her all the time when she was a puppy.  The only other thing with her that's a little weird (and this could just be every dog) is that she gets a certain "sense" about people and will shy away then start barking at them.  Its weird.  Some people she accepts right away and others she won't have anything to do with.

But good luck with your new pup!  Deaf danes are a really special breed.  I wouldn't trade her for the world.  And if I ever had a chance to get another deaf dane, I would in a heartbeat.

And if Mozart is a pup (or even if he isn't!), be prepared for a serious velcro dane.  Boo wouldn't leave my side for anything.  I couldn't even go to the bathroom or take a shower without her!  She's 14 months now, so she's a little more independent, but there are still plenty of times I trip over her!  ;D

the thing is she is deaf...and if she isnt looking at you ... you can not tell her what to do.

Boo doesn't bop them on the head, she just goes into play bow and then starts jumping around.  That's a little too much since she's probably up to 125lbs now.  I've tried a "settle down" command, but it doesn't work with her.  When she gets too full of it with our other dog, we've been putting her in her cage.  I had a problem like this with Boo recently and our other dog.  But I'm sure Jazzy is like Boo and turns her head so she doesn't have to "pay attention".  Have you tried a command for "easy?"

I know of one other deaf dane on here.  His name is Tenchi and he's just beautiful too.  There is something about the dignity of a giant dog who can't hear but still carries themselves as if they have no problems at all.  Boo would be thrilled with another dane her size!  She gets a little too rambunctious with our bulldog mix.  Yay!!  And Boo's eyes go screwy sometimes too.  One pupil gets bigger and the other stays the same.  The vet never seemed worried about it.  Tell Jazzy Boo can't wait to meet her!!!!  Yeah I know, even though Boo is deaf, I still totally talk to her all the time!

She is just gorgeous!  And she sounds like a character just like Boo.  Ok, Natick is only like 2 hours from us.  We should get together some time.  They sound like two peas in a pod.;D  And I wonder if the brain damage was just a result of the vet not knowing what to do with a deaf dog.

shaking index finger side to side or if something big then four fingers together and thumb...like a mouth with your fingers and open and close over her nose. Shaking the finger is a little too harsh for her... she puts her ears flat on her head and gives that OH PLEASE DONT BE MAD look  the book is called living with a deaf dog .... best book...it shows 60 different handsignals, with all types of behaviors linked to them.

Then she shouldn't meet Boo then!  Boo thinks the "no" sign is an oppotunity to talk back to mom and tell her what she thinks about that "no"!  I'd like to see that book though.  You said that Jaz was brain damaged.  How did they determine that?

boo...jaz is deaf too...she knows some asl i found a great book for you on deaf dogs if you would like.

What book is it?  When we first got her, her breeder was great and sent us links to different deaf dog/deaf person sites.  Then we found an amazing trainer (actually two) at Petsmart who were more than willing to work with a deaf dog.  We use a combo of ASL, training hand commands and some made up stuff just for her!  My daughter had cheerleading the other night so we brought Boo to walk on the track and do training.  It was the best feeling when someone came up and said "You have the biggest dog here, and yet, she's the best behaved, best trained dog."  Thank god they didn't see her rampaging thru the house! :o  What do you use as Jazzy's "no" sign?
