Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Advice on Dogs in bed...
« on: December 21, 2006, 01:04:09 am »
With my husband and I, a 4 year old, a 3 year old, 2 cats and Gypsy we have a strict rule (lol) that everyone GOES to bed in their own space. Usually once we are asleep someone ends up in our bed at some point, but as long as the night starts with just me and hubby it's OK. Good luck! I have to admit, there is just something so fun about 2 adults, 2 kids and a 115 lb. dog all piled in together!!

Hi,
Our Gypsy has been with us about a month, and since she came to us with no available history, we haven't really been socializing her until she got up to date on shots and spayed. She does bark at people and dogs outside the house and will really bark if we are in the car and someone tries to come up to her. Our trainer recommended a spray bottle with 9 parts water to 1 part listerine to spray at her when she does this with a " No bark" or "Leave it- friend" type- command but like Stella said I also think, at least the first bark, she is doing her job. If she carries on I will then spray her. This does seem to at least take her attention off whatevers outside for a minute. Hope this is helpful!

Thank you. Trimming their nails should be fun, lol! That is a great suggestion and we will do that! As long as nobody gets hurt, I'll be happy. And yes, I noticed how much she wanted a kitty-crap sandwich, we took care of that and then found her snacking on a hairball present my cat left me today!  :o Gotta love 'em!

Hi everyone!

Today is Gypsy's vet appt. and as long as we get the OK from the vet we will start introducing her to our 2 very spoiled, and just a little bit PO'd, cats. We have had Gypsy 5 days and have basically just kept the cats outside or in the basement. My older cat, Buddha, has spent the past 5 days taunting her through the sliding glass door. He likes to just stand as close as possible to the glass and smack at her through the window. Gypsy will do a little play-bow and bark but a couple times has given a little bite to the wood at the bottom of the door. She is fairly easily corrected with a "leave it". I am able to walk her on leash right past the cats when we go out and she seems less interested now than 5 days ago. I am more concerned that Buddha will scratch her and hurt her than I am for the cat as she seems to just want to check them out.

Sorry I'm long.... So, my question is- how did you introduce yours? Is there a right way to do this or just whatever works best for them? Any advice would be appreciated. I just don't want anyone hurt!

Thanks, Cara

Thank you!

We picked her up Saturday and the warden said on his way to meet us he did see one but couldn't catch her. I will check in with him later this week, if anyone is interested I can post an update.

Hi Everyone!
I had posted awhile back as my family grew closer to getting a Great Dane puppy and will now "unlurk" to introduce our new family member, Gypsy. While waiting for our puppy, we said if a perfect rescue came our way we would adopt instead, so here she is. Gypsy is a Cane Corso Mastiff, believed to be purebred and an absolute love! She and two others were dropped off on the side of the road and she is the only one they have caught so far! She is a little underweight but otherwise appears to be healthy. Friday is her vet check. We are so excited to have her, she is an absolute dream!

p.s. Any advice on getting my cats to not kill her???? They are a wee bit upset.....

Thank you!
Cara

I tried to put my her picture as my avatar but am a little (ok a lot) technologicall y challenged.... .i'll keep trying!

Great Dane Discussions / Best GD book you've read?

Just wondering if anyone has a favorite great dane book they've read? The ones I have read have all been pretty basic as to health, temperament, colors, etc. I'm looking for something that maybe gets into training methods, crating, etc.

If anyone has a favorite they'd be willing to recommend I'd appreciate it greatly!

Thanks,
Cara ;D

Thank you!

I did recieve your PM, thanks for the heads up and the info.

My name is Cara and we live in Cheshire (New Haven area). I am a petfinder addict already so I do check regularly. I also requested an application at our local Great Dane rescue. I am still unsure about breeder vs. rescue, we still have to fence in the yard as I'm seeing this is pretty much a requirement and get through the summer things we have planned that wouldn't be pet-friendly.

Thanks so much for this, I really appreciate all the help I can get! ;D

Hi Rebekah!
Thank you for the post. Leeloo is too beautiful, as are your other babies. I have been reading your posts about Nigel recently, I truly hope it all works out for you.

Rescue is certainly something we will consider, I do want to wait until after the summer to get my Dane as we have a couple trips planned that would not be pet-friendly and cannot be changed. I have requested an application from the Great Dane rescue in our area, regardless.

And, we are going to fence in the yard in the meantime. Thanks again!
Cara :)
