General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: thoughts on Bernese?
« on: May 04, 2008, 05:54:25 am »
Hi ...... while I read a lot, I seldom post. In our household we have a 4 year old Bernese Mountain Dog, an almost 4 year old English Golden Retriever and an almost 3 year old Leonberger. I must say that Louie, the Berner, seldom drools. About the only time he does is when treats are being handed out and the two girls get theirs first. We have a Berner next door to us at the lake too. In fact they got theirs because they fell in love with Louie, and at first did not even know the name of the breed, but just knew they wanted a 'Louie dog'. lol Riley never drools.

Louie, from the time he was a puppy has been so laid back. People have always referred to him as an 'old soul' from his early days.

I also belong to a Berner board, and believe me, there are more and more Berners living to 12, 13 and 14 years of age. Malignant Histiocytosis is the cancer that most affects the breed.

In summary, I just want to say I think Bernese Mountain Dogs are a wonderful breed.

Hi .... I have Montana who is going to be 3 in August. She is an English Golden and is much smaller than my 2 previous Goldens. We live with my daughter and SIL who have Louie, Bernese Mountain Dog (3), and Savannah, Leonberger (2). Since Montana is so much shorter, she can go underneath them to get where she wants in a hurry. lol

As we feed Eagle Pack Holistic (different flavours)to 3 dogs, I wanted to ensure they do not use rice protein concentrate, and received this reply from John Marsman, Nutritionist, E.P.:

Hi Pat,

...and sorry for the delay. I was at an industry meeting reviewing the ways to safeguard pet foods. There was an expert there from the University Of Kansas. His biggest point was "KNOW YOUR SUPPLIERS." We do not use wheat gluten in anything we make. One Prism item had rice gluten but it has been removed and the new label will reflect that and it is not in any of our foods. Holistic Transition uses it as a carrier. If any ingredient is in our food it is definitely on our label. We don't use  wheat gluten.

I am glad you asked we be upfront and we make a point of that. There is no excuse for a manufacturer not knowing country of origin for ALL ingredients. Either they are not doing their homework or they are by design avoiding the answer. We use glucosamine and most glucosamine comes from China. Our vitamins come from BASF, the leading U.S. vitamin manufacturer, but even they must buy some from China. Any vitamin blend you buy for yourself or that is included in pet food most likely some of the vitamins come from China. The bottom line is know your source and we do. We are EU Certified and among other stringent rules you must have an ingredient sourcing trail. We do. Feel free to post this.

Please feel free to pass on your thoughts and anything you hear out there.

John

I don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but it is a joy to watch and brings a smile to your face. We have a 3 year old Berner in our household, and it brings back memories of Louie's puppy days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqXcQr5KXkM

Enjoy!

I seldom post as I don't have an Avatar. Have been having a 'down' day, but when I saw your post about Gus, it make me feel so happy. Take care.

Leonberger Discussions / Re: Question, to all Leonberger Owners
« on: August 06, 2006, 01:58:25 am »
I live with my daughter and son in law who have a Leonberger who just turned 1 last month and a 2-1/2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. I would say the Berner is more velco when it comes to humans, but the Leonberger has really bonded (too much) to the Berner, and if he is away for even a few hours Savannah is really upset.

We too are in Ontario, and when it was time to get Savannah, none of the Ontario breeders had a litter so my daughter and I flew to Vancouver to pick her up from a breeder there so she could ride in the cabin in a Sherpa bag rather than in cargo. She is a delight, but much different than the Berner who is so laid back, and my Golden who is just turning 2.
