Hello, a few weeks ago we agreed to foster and possibly adopt a Mastiff that had been rescued from a Los Angeles shelter back in May of 2009. The family that had adopted her from the pound couldn't control or properly care for her.

She is a Female apricot mastiff named Daisy with a black mask and she could pass for full english mastiff or possibly american mastiff. She is probably about 18 months old.

When she came into the pound she was missing a toe and the family that adopted her let her wear a cone for 5 months and kept giving her constant antibiotics since the wound would not close. The first thing we did upon taking her was to have her looked at by a vet and specialist. There is a piece of bone still present which has constantly reopened the wound. In order to fix this correctly she'll need surgery which we were quoted could be about $3000. If not fixed it will continue to remain an open wound vulnerable to infection.

She behaves wonderfully letting you bandage the foot and apply medication to the wound.

Daisy has shown to be a great dog and will improve if someone can further devote some time to this gentle giant.

She is great with kids, We have a 6 month old and she has shown no agression.
She does well with our 3 year old mastiff grace.
We haven't seen any food agression toward people, I can remove food from her bowl while eating, but she did growl at grace once(we believe that was due to the fact that she was only getting about 1/2 the food needed for a 18 month old mastiff).

We have been working on training her and she is catching on to commands quickly. She is spayed and housebroken. She is also crate trained, although she will bark if left alone in the crate (we found that usually leaving a the radio or tv on helps with this).

I plan to continue to work with this giant and foster her, but we cannot afford the vet care she will need in order to give her a full and wonderful life.

If you are considering adding a mastiff to your family or have the resources to help this gentle giant it would be greatly appreciated.

There has been a lot of talk about the Mastiff "mauling".  I got this information from a woman who works directly with the Southern California Mastiff Rescue operations.

We all know these dogs are gentle giants, unfortunately the media is quick to criminalize the behavior of large dogs.  I believe that is a case of ignorance and fear in what people do not understand...

------
I want everyone to get the word out. The Mastiffs DID NOT attack the guy that died on the grounds. Let everyone know this was a big over zealous mistake by the police when they had NO other things to say cause they released the info too soon.

The guy died of natural causes and the mastiff's were only trying to figure out what was wrong and help the guy out. The wounds from the mastiff's were ONLY Superficial like scratch marks from nails and no bite marks that broke the skin.
I'm sure we all know how that happens to us on daily occurrences in just playing with our beautiful animals.

The mastiff's were friendly wagging their tails when animal control came in to take them out. No need to subdue any of the mastiff's.

When speaking with the mastiff rescue who followed up immediately, they got all the info the could at this point. And that's the real news.

Pass it on whenever anyone says anything bad about our mastiff's.

Take care

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Help Grace is sick - UPDATE
« on: May 03, 2007, 03:21:21 pm »
So Grace was at the vets all day yesterday and today getting meds and IV fluids.  The result right now is that she has a overgrowth of bacteria in her small intestines and low thyroid levels.  She still doesn't show interest in food, but they force fed her today and we will have to continue tomorrow if she doesn't eat.

They put her on Tylan... has anyone's dog been on this?
They are also testing her for clostridium as well.

Her Birthday is actually the 19th, I had it in on the wrong day... at first we thought it was the 14th, and I put that on the profile. Then all her AKC paperwork said the 19th -
I think I read a 9 as a 4...

Those are so funny LMAO!!!

I don't have anything near that embarassing, but this was kinda funny:

Grace gets a little excited when she sees my husband or I when the other one is walking her. So we were walking one day and my husband was far ahead of us with Zoe while I worked with Grace.  So we are in a fast trot when we come around the corner and she spots Hubby.  She takes off like a rocket and since I was moving quickly already, she was able to get me off-blance.  There is a fairly busy street next to us and I was not about to release her leash. So I grab it with both hands and manage about 4 long strides before I lift-off.  I literally flew through the air just like in a cartoon for about 10-15 feet before I landed on the grass easment strip between the street and the sidewalk.  (I am still holding the leash).  We apparently have reached my husband,  and Grace suddenly realizes that I am no longer on my feet, so she returns to me, does a perfect sit and then proceeds to snuggle ontop of me and check to make sure I am alright.  Which thankfully I was, but my sholder was a bit sore the next day.  I think all the people driving by must have thought I was psycotic.

It was about 16 hours after she ate, the rice came up un digested but I didn't see any of the chicken.  I am hoping it is just an upset tummy...

She actually had a checkup a couple days before and I did a fecal which was parasite free...

thanks for the good thoughts!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Help Grace is sick NEED ADVICE
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:00:30 pm »
Sunday Morning grace started throwing up - clear white bile that was kinda like a stick spider web goo.  This went on every two hours or so and she wouldn't eat or drink so I ended up taking her to vet emergency.  They gave her some fluids and did x-rays to see if there were obstructions.  The x-rays were a bit murky.

She had some diarreha after getting home, but didn't throw up when we gave her small portions of chicken and rice monday.  She also seemed more active monday night.

Today she started throwing up again (all of yesterday's food) and is very letharic, won't drink again, etc... Her stool is still basically liquid but also has that mucas quality of her bile/throw-up.

I am taking her in to the vet first thing tomorrow for blood work.  They have her on anti-naseau and anti-biotic now.

She may have ate some grass or weeds in our backyard, but I can't think of anything else she may have gotten into.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Jen :-[

Hi Megan we're all pulling for you and hope things will work out for you and your mom.  I'm glad it looks like you'll still be able to visit your animals. Just keep one foot in front of the other and you'll get throught the tough times.

so sorry that you've had such horrible luck...  I had to chime in on the house stuff and the dogs...

We bought our first home about a year and a half ago and the people that lived here trashed it while they moved out, holes in doors and walls, they backed into the AC and destroyed it, left 2 semis full of trash, broke glass all over the yard, left rat poison out in the open in the yard.  We've basically been gutting the house and redoing everything.
Thankfully are neighboorhood is excellent, our neighboors actually came over and help with the trash and demolition.
The neighborhood also has a lot of dogs.  Our beagle barks a lot, but we try to bring her in when she does.  Grace only barks when something bothers her or at the duck chlorine float that moves in the pool.  Thankfully most of the other dogs are way worse... there is a beagle 2 doors down that bays constantly and other barkers.
So hang in there, things will turn around - the plumbing will work, the lottery ticket will surface and the hubby will see the error of his ways and realize that you are always right =)

AWWWW what cutie pies!  HOw big exactly does that breed get?  weight???

I've heard of English Mastiffs anywhere from about 140 to approx 300+ lbs.  The biggest holds the record at 375lbs.  Grace's mom was about 160 and her dad 250 and since females are typically smaller we figure she may be 180-220...  Right now she is 8 1/2 months and she just topped 100 pounds
