Neapolitan Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Long time no see!
« on: November 12, 2006, 11:19:35 pm »
Hi all, I know I haven't been on for a long time, but my computer has been acting a little crazy. Well, I have good news and bad news. If you don't remember, a couple months ago Laika was diagnosed with diskospondylit is (sp?). The good news is that Laika hasn't shown any signs of pain or discomfort for the last couple months. We took her to the vet last weekend for a routine checkup, just to make sure the antibiotics are doing their job. That's where the bad news comes in. In the x-ray, the area around her pelvic bone is very cloudy. He said that he expected the calcium build-up to go away since she'd been on antibiotics for two months, but it just hasn't. He said it's nothing to be REALLY worried about, since she isn't showing any signs of discomfort, but it could cause some problems down the road. His best guess is that we just got to it too late. In case you all forgot, I had taken Laika to three different vets since she was 2 months old, and none of them knew what was wrong with her, even though they took x-rays. Sooo since they didn't know what it was, and was actually making it worse by giving her two week's worth of antibiotics, her calcium build-up is irreversible now. Ugh. Also, something that really worries me but not so much the vet, is that 2 months ago when we first started seeing him, she weighed in at 95 pounds. This last weekend, she weighed 93. So instead of gaining weight during her growth spurt (she's now 11 months), she's lost 2 pounds. The vet said it's because her body was working so hard to fight the infection, but this is supposed to be her prime growth spurt, and she didn't do any growing! Should I be this worried? Ugh. Sorry everyone, just needed to vent a bit I guess!

Oh, yeah, and we have a new addition to our family! Meet Boris (he's on the desk).

I agree, they look like little bites, but I'd make sure to watch her so she doesn't lick them and make them worse.

Awww they were all so great, it was so hard choosing!!! I wish I had had time to dress up Kingsley and Laika!!

Kingsley and Laika hump all the time. Kingsley doesn't hump Laika or humans, but other dogs are fair game. I've stopped going to the dog park very often because it's so embarassing.

Laika only humps Kingsley. She didn't start until we got her spayed, but now she does is a lot, probably once a day or so. It just looks so weird.

That is sooo cute. Do I see ear cleaning going on?  My old dog Porter LOVED to clean my best friend's boxer's ears.

Yes, you do see ear cleaning!! They love to clean each other's ears. I sure don't mind, cuts down on my chores!!!

As soon as I vacate the bed, they take over! It's good to know my dogs are just as lazy as I am!!

Ugh...the in-laws don't like Kingsley at all. MIL is allergic to him, but not Laika. Also, last Thanksgiving when we took him to their house, he wasn't exactly on his best behavior. He hadn't had a walk all day and he was in a new place and not allowed to greet anybody. They banished him to the garage, and he whined and barked the whole time, so FIL finally asked me to please put him in the car. So now, even though they haven't really been around him since then, they still think he's annoying. They supposedly like Laika and asked us to bring her to Easter dinner, so we left Kingsley with my mom and took Laika. As soon as we got there, MIL said "I've got the kitchen all made up for her." Which meant there was a water bowl and both doors were blocked off. So Laika had to sit in the kitchen and watch us eat. She was only a few months old at that time, so obviously she cried the whole time.

My family is all pretty good about the dogs, but in most cases, I think they just know that if they say something bad about my dogs, I'll leave. My dad is in love with Kingsley. Whenever he comes down to visit he just goes on and on about how beautiful he is :)

I really want to get Kingsley into that. I think he'd love it. I just have to get the stay command working...

This is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be :( I bought Laika a witch's hat this weekend and she won't quit eating the braids!!!

Haha, yeah, they would, but I have a hard enough time cleaning up after them and Justin! I don't think I'm ready for another one yet! It's so disgusting that I have to wipe down my walls on a weekly basis because of the slimewads (Kingsley hair + Laika drool = slimewad)

Aw, they're gorgeous!! Justin has also been begging for an Irish Wolfhound for awhile now. I just hate the really short lifespan. We're actually going out to the Celtic Festival about 45 minutes from here on Sunday just to see one :P

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New documentary
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:57:31 am »
Hey all, I don't know if anyone has heard of this documentary before, but it's called Dealing Dogs.
Dealing Dogs

Each year, 42,000 dogs are sold to veterinary schools and research labs by Class B dealers, who are required by federal law to buy the animals from pounds, shelters and small breeders and to treat them humanely. However, many Class B dealers violate the law. DEALING DOGS exposes the abuses that took place at one of America's most notorious Class B dealers - Martin Creek Kennel in Arkansas.

I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my Netflix list!

« on: October 10, 2006, 03:55:30 am »
It was raining this morning, but I knew the dogs needed baths anyway, so I just let them play in the rain. At first, Laika didn't think the rain was all that fun. She just sat on the porch looking at me like "You want me to go out there?!"

Kingsley had no problem running out there though. He took refuge under the shed for a little bit. If you look carefully, you can see two eyes.

I took a little video of it too:

In the middle of the video, when it looks like they're wrestling in the yard, it's actually her dragging him by the tail. Needless to say, Kingsley and her got a little dirty. You can't really tell she's filthy because it blends in with her fur.

And of course, some pictures of them being muddy:

The worst part is, since I had an unexpected day off yesterday, I swept and mopped all the floors. Looks like I'll have to do it again!

Yeah, I think in Europe it isn't customary to dock Neos, but here in the States it is. In Harry Potter the Neo isn't docked.
