We went to the vet on Monday afternoon following the dog fight on Saturday. Jake had to be sedated and his wounds shaved and cleaned very well. It also had to be lanced as well and he came out with about 5 sutures. And a rx for cipro. He is doing great! As far as the pit, my neighbor came over and told me he was taking him to a friends house to put him down. He said he wasn't going to have a dog that attacked other dogs and people. But I told him I didn't necessarily want harm to him but that was his business I guess. So anyways he is gone. He was very concerned with my friend and I, he also tried to give me money for the rx and vet bills. But I refused for other reasons, he is in financial problems, he just lost his wife last month. And he needed the money worse than I. But I am going to post some pics of jake. Thanks again all.

Thanks for the advice and concerns. You are absolutely right Slave2dane because there have been MANY times where I let the dogs out (on tie out of course) just to play and I go inside to do other things or yardwork, etc. But I can't do that now! Not until he gets rid of them or something is really done. I don't own a gun nor do I plan to own a gun for this reason in particular but I do have other means such as a pellet gun or o.c. spray if it happens again. I know it won't kill'em but it will atleast get him away.  Even if he's even on my property. I have looked into the fence for the dogs and I actually have a boundary fence on the other side (of course). But I cannot remotely afford it right now to fence the entire yard in. Last quote $8,000!! That is for a wood fence which is what I need in this case so they cannot even see them to get stirred up but a chain link also, the pits have already chewed through theirs!! I think I just need to pack up and move LOL!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / HELP! Dog fight

I'm sorry this is long...I haven't posted in a while but I need some help from you all. I own 2 dogs, jake the golden retriever and audrei the lab mix. My dogs stay in a dog pin and are only let out on a leash or tie outs. I live in a subdivision I guess you could say. I have a neighbor who own 3 pitbulls and they have a few puppies as well. Well most of the time he keeps his dogs either on tie out or in a dog pin as well. But they are on ocassion let loose or get loose. These dogs also might I add have chewed holes in the chain link dog pin and gotten out. Well Thursday I let mine out on tie outs and one of my neighbors pit, attacked my jake after he broke lose from his tie out. My neighbor was at home at the time and got his dog off mine. Jake was limping on my front paw but he is okay now. And then yesterday I was letting them out again and I noticed prior to letting them out, making sure all of them were secured. The attacking dog was in a dog pin. No more than I got my back turned, the attacking dog got out of his pin, my neighbor was not at home. And attacked jake again. I was outside by myself, my friend inside the house. I was doing all I could trying to get him off jake. I was kicking the dog in the face and everything. I was also screaming at the top of my lungs, my friend finally seen what was going on and came outside to help. She broke a lawn chair over the attacking dog and he still wouldn't let go and then she took a broken piece of the chair leg and was stabbing him in the throat. We managed to get them apart and jake back in the pin. In which jake's ear was the only thing the pit could get a hold of because jake is so thick around his neck he was unable to get him there, Thank goodness!! Jake's ear is split, I cleaned it with peroxide and also gave him some keflex antibiotics I had from previous. The vet of course was not in lastnight but I plan to contact her in the morning. It looks like in my opinion because I am a medic myself he could use stitches but I'm not sure if they  stitch these areas. Any one know??

Some neighbors down the road came over with their guns just after we got them apart. My friend and I both got bit, I on my right leg. But I think it was from jake, he was trying to get a hold of something. And my friend got bit on her hand and she thinks it was jake as well but really not certain. And also uncertain if the pit gets vaccinated. We contacted the sheriffs dept and they came out. My neighbor is getting cited to court for his dogs. And this is a recurrent issue also. The same dog attacked Audrei a couple months ago. And the same dog has killed a toy breed down the road and also gotten into fights with other dogs in the neighborhood. He is trying to get rid of them all but its not soon enough!!! I can't even let my dogs out and its not fair!!! My neighbor and I get along but its his dogs that are a nuissance! It seems to me they could put this dog down but I am not all sure of these type of things. Any advice?

Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I will let you know how things go. I have to wait just a little bit longer though cause they are being treated for sarcoptic mange and definetly do not want to bring that inside!!

Do you have an area of your house like a mud room or laundry room that leads to the back yard?  If so you could install a doggie door there.  Keep the rest of you house locked up of course, but this way the pups can have somewhere to go out of the weather, and away from crazy neighbors.  How big is the dog pen?  You could also try gating off the area that the crazy neighbor is jabbing at, that way he can't reach them and they can bark their little hearts out without having to worry about him hurting them.

BTW I don't know if I've said hello to you yet, so HI!!  Welcome, and we must see pictures!!!  Please  ;D!!

It's nice to meet you! Yes I promise I will get pictures up soon, looking for the perfect ones!! I don't have a room that leads to the back yard. I have a garage but it goes to the front. I did have a boundary privacy fence kind of thing built on that side of the crazy neighbor, I want to fence in the entire back yard but geez!! Very expensive!! that one side cost $3000! It has helped some, but he still watches me all the time, I hate it!! My lab mix absolutely hates that man, there is no doubt in my mind she would eat him alive if she ever got the chance! But anyways thats another story. My stepdad built the dog pen and its about like 10 feet by 15 feet. Its a pretty good size. I may have to try the crates if I decide to bring them in cause I don't want my house destroyed!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Outdoor dogs to in indoor dogs?
« on: September 01, 2007, 11:49:43 pm »
I have been thinking about bringing my dogs in. My golden is 3 and my lab mix is about 4. I recently bought my own house and before I was living with a friend and they had to be outside. My golden has not lived inside since he was a pup. But now that I have my own place I have been contemplating how they will take the transition. They are outside in a pin right now. And I have a very strange and crazy neighbor who in the past has come over and harrassed them by jabbing sticks into the dog pin at them when i wasn't at home, supposedly they were barking at him! Hello! I would too! But anyways, my job requires me to be away 24 hours at a time and I am constantly worrying that something will happen to them. But he has been warned not to ever come over again. But I still worry. What do ya'll think??

Tomorrow is his last day on rimadyl. And it will be end of next week before I can get some supplements. But I hope we won't have to do any rimadyl on long term due to the possible side effects. He is also being treated for sarcoptic mange! (him and mt lab) So he has not had a good time lately. We are still doing the dips and he is on keflex due to secondary infections, he doesn't have much hair. He looks pitiful! I miss that pretty golden coat! And it sucks not being able to love on them like i am used to.   :(

Thanks for the info guys. My golden is only six so I dont think it is a severe case or anything. But I will try the supplements to make sure his skeletal system stays up to par and he is pain free. This was not my regular vet that put him on it but we go to him in October for an annual check up and see what he thinks. But I am a believer for the rimadyl, it has given me my playful pooch back!

Hey! My golden was put on rimadyl last week and only has about a weeks worth of medication. I have seen a great improvement in him. He went from limping on his left rear leg and slow to rise (if he even wanted to do that), to now he has a lot more energy and I can tell his pain is not like it was. But when I asked if he needed a refill the vet said no. So I am not very familar with this medication. But does this mean that he is better and will no longer have any problems or do I need to just place him on some kind of supplement? I am confused about this medicine and also a new to arthritis, this is first treatment. Any suggestions?? :-\

Golden Retriever Discussions / Too much fish?
« on: August 28, 2007, 06:45:08 pm »
Hi I started feeding my golden and lab mix blue buffalo sweet potato and fish a couple months ago because i thought they were having allergy problems but to make a long story short they are recovering from sarcoptic mange. Is eating the this food giving them too much fish? Also  golden is trying to regrow some hair he lost because of this and I know this food can also be good for the skin (which is why they were put on it initially) but is it too much fish?  ???

Thanks for the info guys. Yes, he looks pitiful but he has the same golden heart he has always had!!! I will definitely try some Vit-E or fish oil to help things along. Audrei is not as bad, she only has lost some hair on her legs. I am not sure where the source came from but I hope to not run into this problem again. They will both probably be excited to get their treats and bones again. I had read where some of the ingredients of these things could be the cause of the allergies so they have been on a very strict diet. But now I feel so bad!! I am feeding them blue buffalo with the sweet potato and fish due to possible allergy problems. Should I change back to nutro natural or keep them on the bb? The BB is about $10 more per bag and just wondering if it would even matter now  ??

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Finally! Diagnosis for skin problem
« on: August 27, 2007, 07:47:32 pm »
I have a golden retriver and lab mix. My golden has always on and off had skin problems, primarily allergies and hot spots. About a year ago when I moved my dogs to new location, not long after my golden began with hot spots again and severe itching. My vet just said it was his allergies again and treated the allergies with prednisone and keflex. It helped temporarily. Then it became worse and he was on the max dose of prednisone. I contacted to vet again and they said it was just his allergies and I would have to try to find out what the allergen was. And they did not request any further evaluation. So I did research and thought he might have a systemic yeast infection and tried the nzymes for awhile. Helped some, got rid of the ear infections and no longer had any hot spots. But he continued to scratch some and then he began losing his hair. I assumed it was only the allergies, because thats what I was always told by the vet. So last week I was fed up and decided on a second opinion. Guess what? Sarcoptic mange, not allergies!! My golden and my other lab as well are being treated for by the vet. I am frustrated thinking that it could have been this all along and my trusted vet for many years continued to tell me allergies!! Grrr! Now my golden is hairless but hopefully on the road to recovery!! Does anyone out there have any idea about how long it will take for the hair to return? It will be getting cold soon! And he looks horrible!!  :(
