Heya everyone!!  THANK YOU for all the great feedback!  I did get Tank from a breeder and met the parents who were really mellow.  I think the advice about being overly paranoid when another dog comes close is right on point.  I have been so scared that he would hurt another dog that I found myself shortenig up the leash and tensing up beyond belief in order to ensure I can control him in the event of a charge....  I have been trying to remain calm and loose when other dogs are nearby, and just give a short quick tug to the pinch collar when he perks up after seeing another dog approaching.  Short circuiting the mind from escalating into aggressive mode works pretty well but sometimes he cant be distracted that way.  I plan to use the treats method going forward.  I will keep you all posted on how it works out.  Thanks again for all the great advice!  I just want to feel secure with the fact that he wont attack, but defending himself is completely ok by me :)

As for the dog park, we have a bunch of them in the area here in Colorado, but I have been too chicken to take him for fear that he will attack another dog.  Do you guys think that a muzzle would be appropriate until he proves he can be a good 'dog park citizen'?

Thanks again all!!!

Hello,

I have a 1 year old English Mastiff named Tank.  He is a complete lover with any and all people no matter what the environment or situation.  The only problem I have with him is with strange dogs while on walks.  We have 2 other dogs, a small Cockapoo that is his best buddy and an 8 year old mutt female that isnt interested in playing with him :)

This behavior is fairly new to him.  He used to get along with strange dogs just fine, but over the past 3-4 months he has gotten into a habit of biting at strange dogs that get within his reach when they show interest in sniffing him.  Obviously this is a problem as he is 180 pounds now and impossible for anyone in the family but me to control fully while on the leash.

I am hoping someone out there will have some tips and tricks on how to remove this behavior issue of his.  He is a wonderful dog and I just dont want to have to muzzle him or be afraid to take him out for walks for fear of him hurting another dog.

Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated!!!
