If the size is not wider than a roll of linoleum that is what i would go with.  If the room is not too wide then there are no seams, it is durable and nothing can soak into it.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Too much protein

According to the Iams website their senior dog food is 24%, their large breed weight control has the lowest I could find at 20%.  The California Natural food I use is only 21%, and is a quality dog food, iams, IMO is no better than purina.

Most of the giant breeds do well in an apartment because inside they tend to be pretty low key, more than happy to just lay around.

Lhasas tend to to be easy to train, which is very different than a breed that needs a dominant owner.

There are a few breeds that will actively protect, but those are the ones that tend to be on the no rent lists.  Having Gage, at 150ish pounds I can tell you that I am rarely approached by people, friendly or not, even bad people tend not to risk it.

If the hair doesnt bother you what about a Chow Chow?  Although they are on some lists I can tell you that their bark is quite large, and people are generally scared of them.  Their stand-offishness towards strangers makes people not want to come near you.  But they are smaller and more likely to be allowed in apartments perhaps.

From what you have said, about coat and drooling I would say a Bouvier, Rotty or Doberman might be more what you are looking for, but I would wonder, like the other poster, how likely you are to find someplace that will allow 100+lbs of dog?

The other thing I wonder about is your definition of "guard dog"?  Do you want something that people would look at and just steer clear, or something that will have a big enough bark to scare people away?

One other thing to consider is that most breeds that are "guard dog" type breeds NEED a strong master, they need an owner that will be the Alpha or they will take that role, which usually ends in disaster.  Are you willing and more importantly able to become the Alpha???

Sorry but IMO if someone gets that defensive you are better off.  I found this "Well what type a guarantee's are you guys offering, most Breeders offer some sort of health guarantees.  I am guessing the pups hearing wont be BAER checked, Im guessing their patellas wont be checked either. " quite confrontationa l, so I can understand getting upset, but her response was too much.

:D Pretty exciting few days here, LOL.

But you never said weather these dogs have been health tested, even if you believe that the aggression is not something in her lines, I would never buy a dog from untested parents.

It could be something they encouraged in her as well.  Local or not, I need to know a few things before i buy a dog.  I want to know the parents have been health tested, I prefer only to buy from conformation AND working lines, but would choose brains over beauty.  I have a dog from show lines, cute, but dumb  ;D.  I know that this doesnt guarantee a healthy smart dog, but it goes alot farther than nothing.  I also want to know what the health guarantee is, and how they stand behind it.  If it is anything less than 4-5 years I would walk away.  If they want the sick pup/dog returned in order for them to replace it, again, I would walk away, how many people are going to surrender their 2 year old with luxating patella so it can be PTS?

I know I have high standards, but I feel that if I am buying a dog I deserve a happy, healthy dog that I am, hopefully, not going to have to spend thousands on for health problems that should have been tested for in its parents.

They are super cool, but the pics were taken in Canada, and are probably not albino, rather they are white coloured moose.  If a population was cut off then a white group is totally possible, look at the Spirit Bears.

I dont understand where people get the idea that purebreds cost tens of thousands of dollars, BYB who bought theirs from pet shops are the ones who charge the huge amounts.   know many breeders of several breeds who sell their pet pups, from fully tested, trialed and shown stock for under 500 canadian, so like 400 usd?  But then I would never look for a breeder in a newspaper either.

To be fair all the breeds were crossbread with other breads to become what they are today. I still believe in keeping pure breds if only because you know what your getting.

An argument which really means nothing.

I have no problem with people who want to start a new breed (like the American Mastiff), recreate an old breed (like the Victorian Bulldog), or have an actual goal (like the Australian Labradoodle, which was created to give people with disabilities a helper dog that combined the well-known positives of a Lab with the allergy-friendly fur of a poodle).

I DO have a HUGE problem with people who just breed random mixes cause they think it would be cool (or because they’re too lazy/stupid to be trusted with an intact pet and can’t be bothered to police it). People like this make the worst backyard breeder look like the poster boy for breeder responsibility .

Not all breeds were created from crossing other breeds, FYI, there are several ancient dog breed who have remained mostly unchanged from they way they evolved.  And there is no real reason to create a new breed today that we do not have a breed for already, they are crossbred because people just want something different.

The lab poodle mix as a service dog was an experiment that failed MISERABLY.  On average 1 out of 4 of the mixes would have the no-shedding coat of a poodle, of that maybe 1 of 4 would have what it takes to be a service dog.  So maybe one dog out of 2 litters had what it took, thats an awful lot of castoffs.

There is a breeder of labramutts in Australia who proudly proclaims that she breeds over 500 a YEAR, not for service work, just as high prices mutts.

As for second gen cross breeds it would depend on if they used a lab or a poodle to sire the second gen, almost in which case you end up with a dog that is mostly poodle again, so why bother?  If you cross a lab poodle mix to a lab poodle mix you usually end up with pups that look like the original 2 breeds.  Same thing happens if you cross a pug beagle mix to a pug beagle mix.

Gage is the product of a not opps breeding I'm sure because when I got him at 7 months old there was another litter of them for sale around where he came from originally, he is a great dog but never in a million years would I have paid for a mutt, especially one from untested parents.

Like they say a fool and his money.

HAHA she does butt checks, gotta love Shibas, except mine taught them to Gage, its a little more noticable when he runs up and butt checks my legs. ::) ::)

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Bark Collars

I have a remote collar that has 15 levels of shock, and a sound warning button.  I prefer it to a bark collar because I can allow Gage to give a warning bark, but can correct him for over barking.  Also because I have 3 dogs I needed something the other dogs could not set off.  I also like the fact that I can use it for other training as well, it works well for off leash training as well.

So incase you guys missed it, Gage ate Korys belt about a week and a half ago, here are the pics!!!

So here is a comparison shot of Korys new belt with the one that Gage ate so you can see how much he ate, and FYI the old one was about 6 inches longer.

Tooth marks, I cut about 2 inches off, so I could round out the edges:
