Newfoundland Discussions / How much food?
« on: January 26, 2009, 07:42:47 am »
Jack is now 5 months old and we feed him 3x a day. I give him about 1 cup per feeding...my husband gives him more. Our vet said 1.5 cups per feeding is okay, which is why my husband goes with that. However, our breeder said about 3 cups per day, so I'm wondering what should I go with?

Sophie looks like a grown up Jack! Yeah, the breeder referred to them as Irish Spotted, but I haven't found in any dog books where thye use that term. He was actually $100 more because of his markings.

Well, the first two times we went, he saw the same lady vet and she was great. Then, we went back for a de-worming and he saw an older vet that's there and last weekend when we went, he saw a fill-in vet due to the holidays. I believe there's normally only 3 different vets there. (We have yet to see the other one)

Thank you! That's exactly what I was thinking. They had never heard of them, but when they heard of vitamin, or supplement, they thought - OH, no we are not supposed to give those! I wish I could find a vet that specializes in large breeds!

AND,the first vet that was concerned with his hips kept going on and on about how much white he had in him. He said he would bet that there was St. Bernarnd in him! I'm like, um NO! So, that right there told me how much he knew about the breed.

Newfoundland Discussions / HD & Supplement Question
« on: December 01, 2008, 06:18:03 am »
Okay, so our breeder has a health contract/guarantee for 2 years. However, in order to keep it valid, you have to give your Newf NuVet pills. She is not a reseller and does not profit from the sales of them, she just really believes in how they work. So, we've been giving our 3 month old Newf these pills every day. Well, at our vets office, two of the three vets we've seen have said something about his hips. They haven't said they are concerned, just that we need to watch them. They also recommended that I not give the NuVet pills. But, if we discontinue the dosage, it voids our health contract/guarantee. So, I'm confused and not sure what to do. I am thinking of contacting the breeder just to get her opinion.

Newfoundland Discussions / How often to you give them a bath?
« on: November 11, 2008, 03:36:22 am »
Our puppy is now 11 weeks old and he got a bath before we picked him up when he was 8 weeks. I'd like to give him another bath soon, but I've heard you shouldn't bathe them too often, so I was just wondering what everone else does?

Yeah, everyone told us we shouldn't get him becasue of the baby coming. But...I look at it like this - we were going to get a dog within the next year or so anyways, so I would rather have him and get him potty trained and somewhat calmed down before I have the baby then have to put up with a very young puppy, a baby, and a toddler.

Well, neither of us is able to be the "stay at home mom", but my husband does work 3rds (One reason for getting Jack), so he's there to let him out during the day and play with him for about 20 minutes before going back to bed.

Also, how long did you crate yours before you trusted them to be out of it?

Yeah, a co-worker told me for another 8 months, I was like, what? LOL I think it will actually get better when he's bigger and I don't have to worry about crushing him becasue he's walking under my feet, or try to see if he's chewing on electrical cords laying behind the couch.

I'm starting to question my sanity LOL We have an almost 2 year old son and are expecting another child in April. We also just got Jack last week. He is being a typical puppy and very rambunctious and I'm starting to wonder if I'm crazy! LOL

So, how long does this puppy stage last? ha ha

Well, it's reassuring to know that I only have a few more sleepless nights!

To the pp that said they were good until they were 4 months, was that 4 months after you had it or until it was 4 months old?  :)

Yes, we have his crate in our room. Sometimes I think if we talk to him, it makes it worse LOL. We also got a baby gate for the kitchen so that he can stay in there in the mornings while I'm getting ready, but he hates that just as much as his crate!

Well, it was a pretty good weekend! Unfortunately we found out he has Giardia  :( But, he's on medication and I think it's getting better. He did REALLY well in his crate the first night, but the second night was terrible! He cried almost ALLL night long :-\ But, last night was a little better, so hopefully it will get better with each night.

I forgot how much I do not love the puppy stage! LOL I think he's so cute and cuddly, but I'm such a worrier, I'm constantly taking him outside and making sure he's not into trouble LOL

Which, I was going to ask, how long did it take for your newfs to be completely potty trained??

So far, he had 3 small pee accidents in the house and has yet to go in his crate *knock on wood*

Thanks!

We do have some toys, but I feel like it's not enough, so we may need to go get more. We have a few stuffed toys, a small rubber tire, a ball, a rope, and a stuffed animal with a rope.

We are also feeding him Diamond Large Breed Puppy as recommended by the breeder.

What do you guys feed for treats? I want something good for him. The breeder said just to give cheerios and if we really wanted an actual treat, to go with Iams.
