But I was at my daughter's house last week and she was fixing lunch and suddenly she whipped out a MANDOLIN, saying "I love this thing." Aaaah!

Heheh, funny, I haven't used it in a while... :P

As for how I've been, I've been scrambling lately! We are moving back to the city, Tom is changing careers, I'm going back to freelancing... So Diesel is going to become a city dog, I guess we will see how that goes.

As for no crate, I don't trust him! Just cause he's a bugger and he knows it! He does fine at Grandma's place without as crate overnight though so maybe I should cut him some slack.

Thanks for the advice guys!

What about using only parts of the names, then cheating to make it sound smoother, instead of using all the letters?

For example
Whajem Faryk (Wajeem Farik-Farik for short?)
Basaat Makor (Basat MacKor- Mac for short?)

LOL I'm a foreign name generator  :D

That's just the general idea, I'm sure someone could find better applications!

Hi guys! It's been a while!

Another training question: how did you progress from home alone in a crate to home alone without a crate? What were your first crate-less home alone experiences? How old before they get free reign of the house? Strategies?

Thanks a bunch,

Mel

Thanks guys! He hasn't done it lately. Last times I pulled him off, and one of the times the guy actually said "ah, he just wants to play!" Nope, not that way, he won't!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Is this creepy?
« on: January 29, 2009, 12:13:33 pm »
I agree with knocking on his door with the hubby to kindly welcome him to the neighborhood. This way, if he's a creepo, he'll back off, if he's lonely, he'll know you're good people. Hubby can also take a good look at him for a second opinion.

You never know, maybe in his culture it is not safe/polite to let a woman walk alone.

I also agree that the smiling is probably to cover for the bad English.

As a French-Canadian with a Ukrainian hubby, we look strange sometimes too. I hear I occasionally (okay often) come off as really rude/loud and that the hubby is like a 75 year-old war veteran, though he's only 26 :)

Seriously, I saw a dude with 7 blond Afghan Hounds and apparently they are all his! Right downtown Vancouver on the Sea Wall. They were quite the sight prancing along in a neat row. :)

FAQs about puppies / Dominance
« on: January 25, 2009, 08:44:25 pm »
So Diesel now is 7 1/2 months and quite massive...and attempting dominance on some dogs. He does the thing where he advances on the dog chest forward and towers over their head. This is really new as a month ago even a pug could boss him around.

So my question is: what should I be doing about it? He does this so rarely but I'd hate for him to get himself in trouble--his last attempt was on a dog that could have probably taken him in 5 seconds flat  :-\

There's nothing stupid about this.

I hear you on the restaurant business. We both work in live events, and I think it is similar to restaurants in terms of stress/grueling work/time crunching/crazy hours. I couldn't even imagine doing this with kids!

Do you still do the bookkeeping?

I hope that doesn't mean you're having troubles though. Lordy, maybe we're all in a mess!!

Nah, last year was my downright awful year, but now things are finally good.

It was harsh family drama. At first I obsessed about it, for months actually, then I occasionally thought about it, then those occasions got further and further apart. I'm convinced that whole process would have been a lot faster if I would have been more emotionally honest about the whole thing. I'd get angry instead of sad, rant instead of cry, etc. You'd think I was a man or something  :D

What about you? How are you today? Is Luke still hangout out inside?

I woke up early this morning and was tempted to run in here and remove my post before anyone read it.

;D Heheh, sometimes I feel like we are much alike, especially right now. I'm glad the early risers beat you to the thread :)

Seems like it really hit you all of a sudden all at the same time... I'm happy Luke was there, and I'm happy you started this thread.

I wish you lived close, I'd give you a gi-normous bear hug. I guess this is me trying to do that electronically .

But, having a dog who prefers to spend the night out and will be spending two nights indoors I need to "entertain" him until he is willing to go to sleep.

How about a mild sedative?  ;D

I say peanut butter is your friend, we but some in a kong and freeze it so it lasts all day.

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Comments on walks, parks, etc-pet peeves

Okay, dish 'em out!

I've definitely got a few :)

1. Nasty looks when it seems I didn't clean up after poop when I couldn't. This was especially bad when Diesel had diarrhea for 4 days--you know those poops that you could only get rid of with a hose? Unfortunately, I don't have a 4 km hose that I drag around on walks.

2. On the subject of poop, this has only happened a few times, but false accusations of poop--when it's another dogs and you take the blame for it.

3. "He's gonna be SOOO big!"

I've mentioned this one before: I get this at least once a day. At least. And the worst, is that most times, it doesn't sound like an exclamation, it sounds like a statement designed to inform. No s**t he's gonna be big, sherlock!

4. Unwarranted advice. I don't need it, or ask for it. You know those wonderful statements that start with "you should..." that usually come out of the blue? I'm good, I'm connected, if I need help I go on this website called "big paws only" where I can start threads if I've got concerns.  ;) (thank goodness for all of you, by the way!)

5. Unwarranted BAD advice  ;D This is my favorite one, once again from a stranger that stopped me in the street: "You know, don't let your dog die too early, feed him good. You should be giving him eggs, bread and bacon ev-ery-daaayy. Hmm-hmm!" (Goes with knowing look + nodding)

6. Random criticism, usually goes with or is a disguise for a #5 offense. "Your dog is skinny, how come he doesn't swim yet, you're too hard on him" (usually said by people who exclaim on what a well behaved dog he is).

7. Over-excited small voices that exclaim and fuss over my dog about how darn cute he is while staring at him and tapping their knees, then get freaked out because he wants to jump up on them... but THEN tell you it's okay when you try to correct him. Um, I think I can be the judge of what's "okay", thank you!

Lol, I needed this vent :)

He hasn't done anything that hurts since he lost his baby teeth months ago. He has just put his mouth on my hand or arm, but didn't even really close his mouth. Very gentle. I have been busy the last couple days and he hasn't gotten as much of my time.

Could just be pent up energy! Lots of dogs get chewy when they have to much energy to spend and no way to spend it. Maybe a long hike/walk or park visit would do it?

For real...I should be reported. I have a '66 Mustang and an older Saab. He actually will fit but I get drool down the back of my neck.

woah, a 1966 Mustang?!?!?

Now THAT is pretty rock'n!

Good job on picking the runt-I love it when the "underdog" wins :)
