Are they nuts about the water, as their name would imply? Do you hunt with them at all?
The younger one is impossible to keep out of the water, the older one was adopted as a mature dog, and don't believe she was allowed to learn about water. However Rica does enjoy wading in the water, but prefers not to swim. The few other curlies I have met all swim and love the water. I do not hunt, but have started to train Magda for hunt tests, etc. She is very keen to retrieve. The people I usually train with all have Labs and find her incredible. She just puts the Labs to so much shame, she is such a driven dog. I suspect come spring I will have no trouble putting a WC on her. Curlies are very much dual purpose dogs, in that the same dog is expected to show conformation and be in the hunting field the same day. They also excell at agility and flyball.

Beautiful dogs! Are they curly-coated retrievers? I don't know much about them. Are their personalities similar to labradors' at all?
Yes you are right, they are Curly Coated Retrievers. Their personalities are similiar to the Lab's and Golden's. They are extremely loving, (even more loving and needy than a Lab, I used to have Labs), very friendly, supposedly aloof with strangers (most aren't, and consider strangers to be friends they just haven't met before). They also tend to be amusing dogs and will seek out things and do things to make you laugh. They are slightly taller dogs than Labs and Goldens. My two girls are about 23" at shoulder and both weigh about 60 lbs. The liver who is still filling out, will probably mature at about 65 lbs.

Westjet flies dogs. One of my friends shipped a dog from Halifax to Hamilton recently for breeding. Doesn't help with the US end, only the Canadian. I also would try an arrange someone to make sure the dog changes planes OK. I am not a big truster of the airlines. Another friend was telling me that Air Canada baggage compartments are not heated, she had to sign a waiver went shipping a dog recently.

Here is this year's Santa pic. It is a fund raiser for the local SPCA.

The liver is sixteen month old Magda, and the black is Rica, seven years old.

Try a health food store. It isn't considered advisable to use the stuff they sell for fish filters in pet stores.

I just thought I would post an update on one of these two dogs. Fortunately both were recovered after two days. At the time the bitch, CH PIZZAZZ TOPPED WITH DESIRE (Desi) was eligible for the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Well she won breed yesterday. What a dog to recover from that ordeal, in fact the next weekend after she was recovered, she won breed and placed in group. What a tremendous dog! DESI Rocks!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: There is a dead bird in my freezer
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:29:37 am »
I hate to say it but there is a dead bird in my freezer, and it is a whole one not just the tail, and I have no intention of ever eating it. I am a woman and being as how several of my friends also have dead birds in their freezers, the only strange part is that the turkey is whole. Our birds are all ducks and we take them out periodically and use them to teach our our dogs how to handle birds for the purpose of hunt trials and tests. If is really funny to watch a retriever attempt to pick up a dead duck for the first time. They pick them up cause that is obviously what you want, then spit them out instantly cause they have feathers and they don't feel right in their mouth. They usually pick them up and spit them out again several times before the retrieve is accomplished. It's hilarious to see. Unfortunately there is no way around training with birds. It is part of the test, that birds be used to test retrieving ability. Fortunately the birds used are always dead. And when training the birds are good for several sessions (with trips to the freezer) before they shred.

Good new from Memphis! Desi and Thriller were recovered this morning. Thank you for your prayers and spread of info that made these dogs too hot to hang on to.

Here is the press release detailing their recovery :
"STOLEN CURLY-COATED RETRIEVER SHOW DOGS RECOVERED!

Memphis, TN  Media and police alerts, good investigative follow-up and a local Good Samaritan helped Memphis Detective Dennis Akins recover two Curly-Coated Retriever show dogs stolen Friday morning from the secure kennel runs in his back yard. Apparently, the word was out on the street that an intensive search was on for these two purloined retrievers, and the thieves released them near the Methodist North Hospital. A nurse who was on break with co-workers spotted the dogs running loose, realized they were too well-maintained to be strays, and took them to the local no-kill Bartlett Animal Shelter. While out following leads that the dogs had been spotted near the hospital Detective Akins stopped at the home of a local animal control officer Sunday morning and learned that the dogs had been recovered. Even though he was not on duty and the shelter was closed, the worker met Akins at the Bartlett Shelter, where he and his beloved canines were reunited. The $1,000 in reward money raised through friends in the Curly-Coated Retriever Club of American will be split between the nurse and the animal shelter. Crime Stoppers is still offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible party.
Akins was more than relieved to get his two Curly-Coated Retrievers back. With dog-fighting rings active in the area, many pet dogs have been stolen and used as bait to train fighting dogs to kill.
Four-year-old Desi and her two-year-old son, Thriller, are more than just your average pets, both are top show champions. Desi, whose AKC registered name is Ch Pizzazz Topped with Desire, won Best of Opposite Sex at the January 2005 and 2006 Eukanuba Invitational National Championship shows. She is also rated in the Top 25 Curly-Coated Retrievers in the United States and has been invited to compete again at this year’s Eukanuba Invitational. Her son, Thriller, is also a multiple group-placing dog.
Akins was seriously injured in the line of duty in August 2003, suffering a very badly fractured leg while attempting to apprehend a suspect. Caring for his dogs helped him heal emotionally and physically during his long and painful recovery. One of his Curly-Coated Retrievers even saved Akins’ life during a hunting trip.
The Curly-Coated Retriever Club of America (www.ccrca.org) joined Dennis Akins in offering the reward for the return of these rare and beautiful retrievers, and is thrilled that the coordinated efforts of so many people led to a successful outcome in this case. If you have any information about the theft, contact the Memphis Police Department at 901-545-4559 or CRIME STOPPERS 901-528-CASH (2274) and crime stopper tips are anonymous. "

There is a God!
Hopefully these vile people will be caught before any other dogs are stolen for these purposes.

I just had the opportunity to check after being out all day, and DESI and Thriller were recovered this morning. There is a GOD, and I thank you for the safe return of these dogs.

This is the message from the owner : "Apparently the theives felt the heat of the media and dropped the dogs off at Methodist north (human) Hospital. A nurse was on her break with co workers and decided to see if they could get the dogs in her car. Of course they both happily jumpped in the car. She took them to the no kill shelter (Bartlett Animal Shelter)

I was out this morning with a neighbor whose wife had seen the nurses attempting to get these guy s in the car. We followed the lead to the hospital of course they were not working. So we were cruising the subdivision behind the hoispital and stumbled across an animal control truck in the drive of a Home. I marched my butt up to the door apologized for bothering the guy on his day off. I flashed a picture and the guy stated yes we have those. He also went above and beyond by getting his child up from her sleep and met us at the shelter to give us the dogs. I failed to get his name but I think he said it was Bret."

Thank you everyone for your prayers and anything you did to make these dogs too hot for the thieves to hang on to!

Here is a message regarding the missing dogs from the president of the Curly Coated Retriever Club of America.

"I have talked to Dennis:  The reason he knows that the dogs were actually stolen is that the fence was kicked in from outside the yard.  Surge managed to run off, but Desi and Thriller were taken.

The worst problem is that it is known in Law Enforcement circles that a series of dog thefts has occurred in the Memphis area with the dogs being used as bait dogs for dog fighters.  In Tenn. the MAX punishment for dog fighting is less than one year in jail, a misdemeanor.  That is the huge concern here.

As President I am going to offer, from the CCRCA, a reward for the safe return of the dogs.  I am contacting another source, but I hope to match five hundred dollars from the CCRCA with other funds for at least a thousand dollars.  After all, most of the thieves and their associates will off Grandma for a thousand dollars!  I understand that Memphis Crimestoppers will also offer an additional reward for information leading to prosecution.

Dennis has also said that the Director of the Memphis PD and the Mayor of Memphis have offered to hold a press conference on Monday to try and secure the return of the dogs.  I am hoping to pull some backing from other national groups on this to support the PDs efforts.  I feel we can also use this to start putting pressure on Memphis and Tennessee at large to enhance penalties and pursue prosecution of dog fighters and those supporting the fights.

Please everyone, I have David working on it but if you can donate to the effort, I think we will be able to accept donations by Paypal.  If the funds (God forbid) are NOT used, we will forward them on, probably into the Roc fund, to be available should this ever happen again.  I also ask anyone and everyone to check with contacts in Tennessee to try and find the dogs.  Further, send e-mails of support to the Police and Mayor of Memphis for their efforts in this case.  Their names and e-mails are:

Hon. Dr. Willie Herenton, Mayor, Memphis, Tennessee     mayor@memphistn.gov
Larry A. Godwin, Director, Memphis Police Department    mpd@memphispolice.org

Everyone please step forward and do what you can; e-mails, phone calls, looking for info on the dogs, etc.  THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OF OUR CURLIES:  THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OF US.  Theft of dogs, and the crimes around dogfighting, are a threat to us all.

Thanks and we will keep everyone posted.

AND PLEASE...not only is permission granted to cross post, but PLEASE CROSS POST!

Jim Crosby, President, CCRCA"

From the sounds of it these could have been anyone's and breed of dog taken. The more people especially in that area who know about the missing dogs the better their chances. Please keep these dogs in your thoughts and prayers.

The dogs were definately stolen or at best attempted (and if it was only attempt, why did only one return). Someone kicked in his fence to get the dogs out, Friday morning. So this was no accidental release of the dogs or canine escape artists at work. The owner is a member of the police dept, so you know his fellow officers are also keeping their eyes open. It is expected that a reward will be offered, and the CCRA is trying to get the media involved. Right now the more people that know in that area, the better the chance the dogs will be recovered.

Two curly coated retrievers were stolen yesterday in Memphis. They are a liver female (Desi), and a black male (Thriller). Anyone in the area please keep your eyes open for them.

This what the owner has to say: It is with a heavy heart I must to all my curly friends that Desi and Thriller have been stolen from my back yard. I hope they will be returned for the reward but I am no very optimistic since the latest trend in Memphis is to steal pet dogs while folks are at work and use them for bait dogs for pit bull fighting. The theives were unable to get Surge as he does what Surge does best, Run off. He returned home about 1200 noon the other two have not been seen.

This is his website so you can know what to look for: http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=16&groupid=234839&ck=

I pray that these dogs may be recovered.

Flat Coated Retriever Discussions & Pictures / Re: Magda the Curly Coat
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:58:50 am »
DixieSugarBear, I just started showing in June this year, so I am quite inexperienced. I take some classes in handling in effort to do better, but so far no payoff. A couple of times the judge has seemed to take a second look in the group ring. Unfortunately the dogs pulled in the group ring are most handled by pro's, and are older more mature dogs. At fourteen months, Magda still looks puppyish beside them. I did try a pro at a show, but still nothing. I have decided to take a break and let her mature some more (curlies are slow maturing), and then try again in the spring. I may try a couple of AKC shows in Maine next year, (they are about eight to ten hours drive away), however mostly I will show in Canada.
How are you making out? any points, any competition in the breed ring.

I get stopped alot and asked if she is a labradoodle, and sometimes if she is a standard poodle. Worst one was at a dog show, where someone was asking their son, if he could identify her breed, suggesting that if might start with I. I corrected quickly, and it turned out she was thinking poorly trimmed Irish Water Spaniel (never seen a liver curly, only the blacks). What made it worst was the next day I saw her again, and it turned out she was a newly trained CKC judge, sporting group.
When I decided to get Magda, I decided to show her, as so many people thought Rica (my black girl)was a labradoodle. The first match she went to, the junior handler who showed her was asked twice if she was a labradoodle). At regular CKC shows, we have no points (win breed everytime, only CCR), and our main job seems to be exposing people to the breed including the other exhibitors. Magda being a very friendly loving girl greatly enjoys her role as breed ambassador.

Here are some more pics of Magda. In March on the picnic table and in May at one of the nearby beaches.
They seem to be an almost unknown breed. In shows around here, she is a one of, inspires much comment as many people have only seen them in books, not in flesh. Unfortunately so far it hasn't paid off in the group ring, although some judges seem to get carried away in running their fingers through her hair. You would think that with hair like that, it would be difficult to care for, but everything just falls out, and to get the coat ready for show, you just allow them a swim in the nearest lake (primps the coat perfectly, and the dog loves it).
