Day-z was 1 yesterday, so today we went to the vets for her annual check up and a weigh in.

He asked me how much i thought she weighed and i guessed 120lbs, he said he thought she was more.

Well, turns out she weighed in at a mere 103lbs.  I don't believe the scales, she is a proper big dog.  The vet said we will weigh her again next month.......

I wish i had the same problem.....

Ah well

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Can puppy St.'s handle stairs?
« on: September 01, 2005, 03:51:28 pm »
IMHO they should be kept away from stairs as much as possible.

Day-z has 3 steps down from the front door to the garden and does that many times a day with ease.  She is not really allowed upstairs and in her 11 months on earth has got up their maybe 8 times.  The last time was recently, and she still is scared coming down.

I just think that coming down stairs is just too hard on their little hips, that let's face it have enough on carrying their not so little weight.

Day-z sleeps downstairs and is very happy doing so.

I reckon this board is a God send.

When i was going through the morning piles of poo with Day-z there was not this board to discuss the insanity we put ourselves through.

But now, here it is.  Not so bad when you can find other people doing the same crazy things for the little furry folk.

That is great to hear.  I am constantly watching Day-z for any signs of this, but it is reassuring to hear that things can be done to help should this happen.

He is lucky to have such good people.

Give your boy a big old hug from us.

Well, i did have the trainer (at $100 per hour) telling me that there was no way that day-z would be house-trained unless she slept in a crate, or a crate by my bed, or a plastic crate instead of a wire crate etc, etc.

Fact is, one day by doing nothing different she was house-trained.

She sleeps in her own room, and thought it was OK to do it in there.  I bought a steam-cleaner and some natures miracle and washed everything every day, etc, etc.  If she slept in a crate she just did what she had to do and ended up covered and needing a bath etc.

I do agree that the option of telling them no at the appropriate time, and making a really big deal over it helps.  Be it a rattle, a pan with a lid etc.  But i have a feeling that when they have to go, their little brains sometimes forget.

kind of St Bernard flower crossed with rapper.

Suits her, believe me.

OK, here is the update.....  We are just back from a $20, "difficult nail cut" at the vets.

Rescue Remedy was tried, and much as she loved taking it - it did not work.

It took 2 of them at the vets, which was hardly a surprise, but they gave me a lecture that annoyed me on how she should let people get her to do anything they ask and imagine if she learned that she could really get her way if she was vicious.  I am really annoyed by this as she has never shown any signs of aggression and she is a big girl who hates getting her nails cut.   Think I am looking for another place to take her from now on.

She is the most loving dog i have ever met, sure if she was vicious she would be a problem, but she isn't.  grrr

Hi there,

well, we shall give it another go this weekend.

From her being a baby we have tried this.  We can clean her ears, her teeth, wash her face, wipe her eyes etc, etc

Paws are a different thing altogether.

Dremmel, treats and i will try again.

Will report back on Monday.

Thanks everyone

Hi there,

we have been working on this for months.  But no matter how many treats we give her, no matter how much we play with her feet with no cutting, Day-z will not let us cut her toenails.  She has always hated her feet being touched, but now, given that she is a big strong girl we just cannot get her to let us cut her toenails.

So, other than taking her to the vets to be done, which is fine but they only can do it by having 3 people hold her down, what do people suggest.

We bought a Dremmel and that is no better.

It is her paws being touched that she hates.

Thanks

Day-z and i live in Miami and it is almost 90 here most days, but it feels hotter.

We pretty much only walk our block these days as she looks miserable if she goes much further.

However, she gets plenty of exercise as we play soccer in the lounge in the aircon most days.

We are also going through this, but thankfully Day-z is doing great.

Started off last Friday, i came home quite late and in her room was a smell of blood.  Could not see anything.  Later when stroking her, i discovered blood under her chin - the fur was quite soked and the blood was hard.  Next morning i took her to the vet.  They examined her and shaved her chin and half her face, and took a sample from the wound site.  They gave me spray and antibiotics.

Today I spoke to them, and the test results are back.  4 kinds of bacteria, 3 of which are handled by the existing antibiotics and 1 which is not.  So, she is now on SMZ-TMP as well.

$300 later and we are on our way to health.

The very annoying thing is, i think this started when she came back from being bathed at the vets with wet ears - i thought nothing of it, but that was Wednesday and it seems like the timing fits perfectly.

Shaved bits are all healed now, but she is scratching and biting elsewhere, hopefully this new medicine will help her with that.

Good luck all

Eddy for sure deserves to have his face on here, and he is a very handsome boy.

With a good vet, and a little bit of luck I am sure he can be OK.  Am sure he will have a very full life full of fun with you guys anyway, and he will know that you are trying.

Love from me and Day-z

Hi there,

am sure there are all sorts of horror stories with Iams, but hey, it is working.

Am not sure i want her to be submissive, but she did really well today.  We took her to basic training, and it was OK for socialising her, but group classes did not really work for us as she was a bit young, and is also a bit lazy so would go into the down position when she was supposed to be running around.  We live in Florida and it was a bit hot for her to run i think.

We had a private trainer for a few weeks, that did little more than stop me going insane with an unhousebroken dog.

Me training her has been the most useful i think.

And, the citronella collar was wonderful, it only had to go off 3 times and non stop barking went away :)

Angus looks like a sweet dog.

Cheers

Day-z is on Iams Large Breed Puppy, and loves it.

Do you have pictures of his Mum and Dad, maybe they were smaller.

Day-z looks just like her Dad.

She went to doggy day care today with all the small dogs, feedback is that she is really submissive, ah bless...

Good luck
