Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Help paying for surgery
« on: January 03, 2009, 03:43:22 am »
Thank you everyone for your input. I will give the information to the owners and see what they say. I might end up with a new mastiff to add to my brood if they are willing to give him to me, because I can not let them euthanize this sweet dog. They said they would not turn him over to rescue, but maybe they would turn him over to someone they know. I don't even know if my gang would accept him. I already have a 6 year old English Mastiff, a 3 year old Newfie and a 1.5 year old St. Bernard.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Help paying for surgery
« on: January 02, 2009, 02:47:34 pm »
I was wondering if anyone knows of a program that helps people pay for surgeries on their dog if they need assistance. I work at a vet clinic and we have a 19 month old Bullmastiff that comes in that needs a TPLO and one of his eyes removed due to glaucoma (due to an injury he received as a pup), but the family is unable to pay and is considering euthanizing. They are not willing to turn the dog over to a rescue organization.
Thanks,
Stacie

Big Dogs with Jobs / Re: Dock Diving
« on: March 12, 2007, 08:59:14 am »
We don't do it competively, but Sully loves to jump off the dock when we go up to my in-laws cabin in Northern Minnesota. They do use there back legs for pushing off, so I am not sure if that would be good for the ACL.

Here are some pics from last summer.

Remembering those no longer with us. / Harley
« on: March 09, 2007, 02:46:38 pm »
I am very sad to say that we had to let our St. Bernard, Harley go yesterday.     It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make, but I know it would have been selfish of me to put him through anymore. He was doing well on the sterroids until Tuesday evening, then he stopped eating and drinking and was panting and not able to get comfortable.

He  will be missed by many people, but I know he is in a better place now. He was a Certified Therapy Dog and frequently went to nursing homes and hospitals to put smiles on the elderly and childrens faces. But most of all, he was the pride and joy of me and my husband and he added so much to our lives.

I am attaching a few of my favorite photos of my big guy. Thankfully we went to a professional photographer and had these taken almost 2 years ago, so I will always have these to remind me of my special guy.

This picture we had blown up very large and is hanging above our couch in our living room.

Thank you to all who have sent their prayers.

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Ear Cropping
« on: March 03, 2007, 04:33:38 pm »
I don't mean to be rude, but anybody who gets ears cropped just because they "like" the look or any other reason other that medical should have to present for the operation. I am a Certified Vet Tech and used to work for a couple of vets that cropped ears (now it is hard to find one that will and luckily the vet I work for now will absolutely NOT crop ears). No matter how much pain meds you have on board before hand the pup always wakes up screaming in pain. It is really hard (actually impossible for me) to justify putting a pup through that just for a cosmetic reasons.

Other issues (as I am sure others have stated) are that the procedure may not work and you may have to do it again; risk of infection (as are other surgeries such as spay/neuters, but that is not a cosmetic thing); they may turn out to be head shy due to the excruciating pain that they have endured to their ears which it makes it almost impossible to apply ear meds if they ever get an infection.

Please have your husband think otherwise about the procedure (or maybe just have him sit out in the lobby while it is being done). I would also question the type of vet nowadays that will actually perform ear cropping.

Just my 2 cents.

Group Discussions & Photos / Pics of my Snowbabies
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:38:53 pm »
We got over a foot of snow over the last few days, so decided to take some pics of the kids out playing (well, Sully was playing and Harley was tolerating Sully).

Here is a pic of our back yard.

This is our 4 foot fence (notice the outline of a car in the background)

Sully playing

Sully taking a break from playing.

Harley and Sully playing.

More playing on Sully's part and here's where the tolerating comes in on Harley's part.

Smile for the camera.

My Harley baby. I took several days off work to enjoy the little time we have left with my big handsome guy. He is eating well and still seems to be in good spirits.

I hope everyone enjoys the pics.

P.S. Sorry for the repeat for all you Newf.net subscribers, i posted the same pics there as well.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Sick St. Bernard...Please Help

He seems to be doing pretty well (probably better that I am doing). The sterroids are helping him eat and drink more and I just had him to the doctor and he said his lymphs nodes have gone done dramatically in size. We also did more bloodwork to see if his calcium has gone down. He had some mineralization in his intestines that was causing him to be sick as well. We have been puming him with fluids (Sodium Chloride) to try to get the calcium down and I think it must be working, because he is no longer vomiting.

I just keep thinking that I will wake up and this whole thing is just a horrible nightmare.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and prayers. It really means a lot. Harley's lymphoma is too progressed for chemo, so we opted to put him on sterroids and make his last days as comfortable as we can.

Thanks again,
Stacie

Thanks to everyone who replied to my Addison's Disease question. I found out today that the lymph node slides that we sent off to cytology came back as high stage Lymphoma and it was present in all lymph nodes. That's all I can say for now, I am just too upset. : (

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Sick St. Bernard...Please Help
« on: February 19, 2007, 08:00:48 pm »
I have a 6 year old male, neutered St. Bernard (Harley) who was otherwise healthy until he stopped eating last Sunday. It started out gradual, but for the past 4 days he has ate nothing. He also is not drinking, although he will eat ice chips. We have tried everything to get him to eat - all his favorites and some new ones. This is definately out of the norm for him. He has never refused food before. When we did bloodwork, the only thing that was off was that he had a high level of calcium. The doctor also took some samples of his lymph nodes, because he thought they seemed a little larger than normal (but then again, everything about him is larger than normal). Hopefully we will have the cytology from the lymph nodes back tomorrow and I pray to God it is not lymphoma. Another thing he mentioned was Addison's disease. He said it is hard to diagnose although it is treatable. Just curious if anyone else has dealt with this before. I just want to make him all better. I can't bear to watch him starve to death.  : (

Thanks,
Stacie

Food Discussion & Information / Re: What people-food does you dog NOT eat?
« on: December 21, 2006, 09:02:23 am »
Our Saint Harley will not eat pretzels or peanuts. I am not sure if it is the salt or what. He like other salty thing like potato chips and popcorn. He always thinks he needs a pretzel when I am eating them, but if I give one to him he spits it out and looks at me like "Duh, mom, I DO NOT LIKE PRETZELS". One thing he absolutely loves is bananas. When he see me start to peel one he starts drooling like mad.
