Medical Conditions & Diseases / Help paying for surgery
« on: January 02, 2009, 02:47:34 pm »
I was wondering if anyone knows of a program that helps people pay for surgeries on their dog if they need assistance. I work at a vet clinic and we have a 19 month old Bullmastiff that comes in that needs a TPLO and one of his eyes removed due to glaucoma (due to an injury he received as a pup), but the family is unable to pay and is considering euthanizing. They are not willing to turn the dog over to a rescue organization.
Thanks,
Stacie

Remembering those no longer with us. / Harley
« on: March 09, 2007, 02:46:38 pm »
I am very sad to say that we had to let our St. Bernard, Harley go yesterday.     It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make, but I know it would have been selfish of me to put him through anymore. He was doing well on the sterroids until Tuesday evening, then he stopped eating and drinking and was panting and not able to get comfortable.

He  will be missed by many people, but I know he is in a better place now. He was a Certified Therapy Dog and frequently went to nursing homes and hospitals to put smiles on the elderly and childrens faces. But most of all, he was the pride and joy of me and my husband and he added so much to our lives.

I am attaching a few of my favorite photos of my big guy. Thankfully we went to a professional photographer and had these taken almost 2 years ago, so I will always have these to remind me of my special guy.

This picture we had blown up very large and is hanging above our couch in our living room.

Thank you to all who have sent their prayers.

Group Discussions & Photos / Pics of my Snowbabies
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:38:53 pm »
We got over a foot of snow over the last few days, so decided to take some pics of the kids out playing (well, Sully was playing and Harley was tolerating Sully).

Here is a pic of our back yard.

This is our 4 foot fence (notice the outline of a car in the background)

Sully playing

Sully taking a break from playing.

Harley and Sully playing.

More playing on Sully's part and here's where the tolerating comes in on Harley's part.

Smile for the camera.

My Harley baby. I took several days off work to enjoy the little time we have left with my big handsome guy. He is eating well and still seems to be in good spirits.

I hope everyone enjoys the pics.

P.S. Sorry for the repeat for all you Newf.net subscribers, i posted the same pics there as well.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Sick St. Bernard...Please Help
« on: February 19, 2007, 08:00:48 pm »
I have a 6 year old male, neutered St. Bernard (Harley) who was otherwise healthy until he stopped eating last Sunday. It started out gradual, but for the past 4 days he has ate nothing. He also is not drinking, although he will eat ice chips. We have tried everything to get him to eat - all his favorites and some new ones. This is definately out of the norm for him. He has never refused food before. When we did bloodwork, the only thing that was off was that he had a high level of calcium. The doctor also took some samples of his lymph nodes, because he thought they seemed a little larger than normal (but then again, everything about him is larger than normal). Hopefully we will have the cytology from the lymph nodes back tomorrow and I pray to God it is not lymphoma. Another thing he mentioned was Addison's disease. He said it is hard to diagnose although it is treatable. Just curious if anyone else has dealt with this before. I just want to make him all better. I can't bear to watch him starve to death.  : (

Thanks,
Stacie

Here is some pics of the gang. They are Sheba (14 year old GSD), Harley (5 year old St. Bernard), Ozzy (4 year old English Mastiff) and Sully (6 month old Newfie). Our Shepherd is really camera shy, so it is rare to get them all in one pic.

Here is Sully's first attempts at jumping off the dock. It was really neat watching him gain his confidence at each jump. He did such a great job.

I can't believe how fast time goes by. What happened to my little floof ball. He is getting so mature.

This is the day we brought him home.

Here he is a couple of weeks ago.

It is rare that everyone sits nice next to each other for an extended period of time so I thought I would take advantage with some pics.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / My poor Ozzy Roo...UPDATE
« on: August 10, 2006, 03:02:31 am »
Ozzy (4 years old) started limping last week so I brought him to work with me and we did xrays. The vet looked at them and said he had moderate hip dysplasia and severe arthritis in both knees. He sent them off to a board certified radiologist and to top it off, he thinks that he has torn both crucites (not sure if they are partial or full - it was hard to tell with all the arthritis) and he doesn't think surgery will help much because of the severe arthritis.  :'( :'( I am supposed to meet with him next week to go over the percentage of improvement he thinks ACL surgery would help. I can't bear to see my Ozzy in pain. He is staying strong but it is obvious that he is in pain.

The one good thing is that the vet didn't notice any muscle atrophy in his hind end yet. We just had an Hydrotherapy place open up for pets so I want to try that. They have a heated pool with resistance and an underwater treadmill. Has anyone tries these?

He is on a strict diet and has about 10-15 more pounds to lose. He is also on excercise restriction (now if I can just keep him from climbing on the couch). It is hard for him to watch all the other dogs play so we try to stimulate him in other ways.

Please keep my Ozzy in your thoughts. I love him so much. I will keep everyone updated to his progress.

Stacie

OK. So here is what we found out from the radiologist. It is definately a bi-lateral chronic ACL issue. The good news is he does think that, despite his arthritis, the surgery should help him get back to 90%. Not to bad. The bad news is, I sent some recent x-rays of my Saint Bernard and he also has at least one knee (only had xrays of his left knee) that has chronic ACL injury. So now I have to somehow come up with $2800 x 3 to cover each knee. My hubbie has offered to sell his boat, so that will definately help.

I could use anyones experience with recovery of ACL surgery. I know I can only do 1 knee at a time with Ozzy, but do you think I should do Ozzy and Harley at the same time so they can recover together. We also have a very energetic 6 month old newfie that is not going to appreciate not being able to play with his buddies for so long.

Newfoundland Discussions / Sully's First Water Rescue
« on: July 24, 2006, 08:00:28 am »
We took Sully to a local lake for some swimming this weekend. Usually I just wade out with him, but on this day I decided that I also needed a swim. My hubby (Dave) was playing with Sully in the shallow water (throwing his bumper on a line, untangling him then throwing it out again - one of Sully's favorite games) and he didn't notice me going out into the deeper water. I made a splash when I went under and when I came back up I saw Sully making a bee-line towards me. He swam behind me then started pushing me towards the shore. He also tried tugging at my shirt. When that didn't persuade me to head for shallow water he swam back to Dave, grabbed the bumper and line from his hands, then swam it back out to me and proceeded to pull me in.

I was so proud of him I had tears in my eyes. We are just starting his water training by just letting him get comfortable in the water. I never imagined that his instincts would take charge and save his mommy. I guess he was saying that he is ready to go to the next step of training.

On the same day, we also thought we would see if he would jump off the dock. Dave positioned himself at the end of the dock and I was in the water. I expected him to be hesitant about jumping, but he just plowed off the end of the dock like he had done it a million times.

I only wish I could have gotten pictures. I only had my digital with me and didn't want to get it wet. We will definately be investing in some underwater cameras so we won't miss this moment again.

This is the only pic I got of him retrieving his bumper.

Here's another of him on dry land (after his brave rescue).
