General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Small dog frustration
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:41:25 pm »
Yesterday we went to our nieces 5th birthday pool party with our gang - always an event.  Before we walked in the door we noticed several people rolling their eyes and said, "Oh no" as soon as they set eyes on our gang.  Rocco and Bella are very well trained, have excellent manners, do not beg for food and are just pleasant to be around. They just want to love and kiss you. So, as soon as we walk in, our brother-in-law's father's dog, Molly (Beagle) barked and challenged our gang.  Our gang hung back, didnt bark or challenge back just looked at her like "Hey, what's your problem? We just came  to swim in the pool."  Well Molly charges up to Rocco and bit his face.  Rocco was stunned but wasnt  hurt, wasnt phased, showed no aggression at all.  Over the course of several hours, Molly harassed our gang, barked and challenged and of course the owner did not correct her, just said, "Oh Molly." Molly did also tried to nip Bella.  Later on I overheard the owner saying to Molly, "You have to protect us from this big mean dogs." ::)

During dinner, Molly was jumping up on chairs, stole someone's hamburger, and later stole a whole hot dog bun with hot dog in it and chowed it down.  She constantly barked, begged for food, jumped on chairs to steal others food and the owners thought this was so cute >:(

Meanwhile, our gang played in the pool, sat in the shade next to us, showed their manners, and never barked or challenged Molly.  Sad to say there were others at the party that shared this sentiment that we have big, uncontrollable dogs.  It was disappointing how big dogs get branded as  the bad guuys and smaller ones, are able to get away with murder.

As always the Newf temperment and personality shined through ;)

Well Rocco was at it again.  The town we live in had their annual "Mellon Fest" to celebrate the summer harvest of mellons.  So we were walking around with our gang on Main St. minding our own business taking in the sites when out of the blue Rocco decides to drop and squat on the middle of the sidewalk :o.  Yes another goey, running one :'(.  The boy has no hangups about where or when he goes.  Bella would never think of doing something as nasty as that - she is too much of a lady.  Who knows where Rocco will strike next...

Last week we took the gang to the lake right by our house to swim.  Every Newfie just loves to swim :D.  They were having a great time retrieving the balls we through out for them.  Our big boy, Rocco starts to causally swim around and all of sudden without any warning we see a blob of diaheria floating from his rear end :o.  We are talking the runny, goey, totally nasty kind.  There was even peas, carrots and other vegetables (ingredients in the dog food he eats) floating towards us - disgusting!  Rocco just had a look on his face like "I don't know what your problem is, it's just a little bit of poop - no big deal ;D"  Thank God no one was around or we would be banned for life.  What a character.

nicki that is the best story ;D  It seems we always have good poop and farting stories around here :)

Our gang here is the WORST.  Tonight we were bushing Rocco, and he was good for about 15 minutes.  Mike started brushing his rear end and all of a sudden this stinky nasty smell over came us.  Yep, a good ole silent but deadly fart.  It was so bad, arent they all?!  I think that was Rocco's way of telling us he was done having his coat brushed ::)

Both of our gang have cleared rooms---the smell is so bad, it makes me sick, and I start gagging once in a while.  Especially if Rocco has an accident in the house, Whew!  I'm sure the neighbors can hear me gagging!!  Rocco just looks at me like "Geez, what's your problem? I didnt do anything."

Through the stench of it all, it still makes me laugh :)

Newfoundland looks beautiful.  My cousin lives in St. John and just loves it.  Actually I have another cousin who went to Newfoundland last week and she showed me her pictures. They were incredible. I think I oohed and ahh'ed the entire time I looked at them. Its absolutely gorgeous!!!!  Defintely a place I want to visit, but think I'd make a summer visit ;)

I agree with what everyone has said.  Sadly he probably didnt learn much from this, and I say they went to easy on him.
Some people should not be allowed to have pets >:(

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss :(
So young but now her struggle with cancer is over and she is at peace.  Everytime you close your eyes you will see her smiling face, giving you drool filled kisses.  She'll always be with you in spirit and will be waiting at the bridge for you.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Sending hugs to you :)

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: my neighbours dog....

I would echo the thoughts that others have already mentioned.  I would avoid walking in the area as well.
Recently, Mike and I took Rocco and Bella for a walk in our development, which is new. So many new people are moving in and the vast majority own dogs.  We were walking and were about to pass a home and I saw a dog, tied out front, not far from the sidewalk.  I think it was Springer or Brittany Spaniel.  As soon as the dog saw our gang he went nuts. We started to walk on the street to put more distance between us and the dog.  This dog was snarling and was foaming at the mouth!!  I have not seen that in years!!!  He was trying to pull free of his chain and my gang looked at him like, "Oh no! What's your problem?"  What irritated me was the owners were on their front porch, saw this happening and said absolultey nothing to this dog.  I'm positive that if the dog got loose he would have attacked my dogs and maybe us.  that dog freaked me out and that doesnt happen too often.  Consequently, we avoid walking in that part of the development.  I see the owners walking the dog in the neighborhod, and they pass on our sidewalk. I keep a very close eye on that dog and am at the point where if my dogs are outside I will say something to this owner.  This dog is scary, not only to other dogs but children as well....The owner falls into the irresponsible dog owner club. >:(

Molly is beautiful.  She looks a lot like our Bella at that age.  Molly looks a little more flat coated (our Bella is too).  Our trainer told us that the flater looking coat is the classic look - Newfies 50 to 100 years ago looked more flat coated.  People always ask us what breed she is - it drives us crazy.  Our Rocco looks like your typical today style Newf - really furry.  There is no mistaken him for anything but a Newf.

My wife Gina want to get a Landseer eventually to add to our brown and black Newfie family.  If I were to agree to add another, I would want a Grey one.  Maybe one day we will have every possible color of Newf :o

Congrats on Molly.  You are going to just love the breed.  You might never want any other breed but a Newfie after Molly.  I know we most luckily never will have any other.

Hi Astrid's mom!  Everyone here has given you a lot of good info.  I would echo what the others have suggested and recommended.  You're in the right place for support and newfie info ;D

We have 2 Newfs, and our youngest is 5 months.  After recently going through 2 puppy phases i can honestly tell you it WILL get better.  That saying is right, having a puppy is like a having a baby.  Which is true, as these pups are babies....just BIG ones ;)

What we did is we crate trained....and at night we have the crate next to our bed.  Rocco, our 5 month old, feels comfortable and safe in his crate, and at bed time will walk in his crate to "retire for the evening"!  He has always liked his crate whereas Bella our 1 yr old never did like it. But she'll go in it if we want her too.  When we got Rocco the weather started to get warmer, and he heats up pretty quick, so we bought a small fan we set next to his crate.  He fell in love with that and loves the fan now.  When he didnt have it and was hoot he wouldnt sleep well and was always moving around trying to get comfy.

As I babble on, my only suggestion would be to move the crate near you in the bedroom, so Astrid feels more safe and comfortable. She's going through an adjustment, being away from her litter mates and mother, and is probably feeling unsure right now. That will soon change. Newfs like to be near and with you so this should help her at night.

Keep us posted. Just know that things will change for the better. Hang in there. We understand :)

Great story Gyp!  Frosty must have been a Pyr in a previous life :)
Frosty will be ruling those puppies, and I would just love to be a fly on the wall to see that!
