Remembering those no longer with us. / Oreo is no longer with us
« on: June 14, 2007, 11:27:07 am »
This past weekend, it became evident that Oreo was nearing the end. The past few weeks were trying on him. His mobility became very compromised, his hair continued to fall out in clumps and he started losing control of his bodily functions. On Monday night, it was with great sadness that I had my good friend put to sleep. Now, I dread coming home to an empty house after work and getting up in the morning without him next to me. He was there every day with me for almost 9 years. The longest and best roommate I've ever had.

I know in my heart it was the best thing for him. But I don't know if my life will ever be the same.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re: Dog meet in Atlanta 04/14
« on: April 15, 2007, 04:40:40 am »
It was great to see Julie and Allan and Max and Dusty at the park yesterday. Max and Dusty got along great with all the other dogs and everyone had a great time. I imagine all the pooches were pooped out by evening, how did everyone else hold up?

It was nice to get out and meet everyone in person. We should do it again soon.

Great Dane Pictures / Then and Now Pics
« on: April 12, 2007, 11:32:11 am »
I was asked by a few people why I haven't posted any pics of Oreo in awhile. My answer is usually that he is camera shy, but I decided to take one this evening. Out of curiosity, I decided to look back on all the pics I had of him, and I found out 2 things. 1) Digital photography has advanced dramatically over the past 8 years and 2) Oreo looks like an old man.

The first pic is when Oreo was 2, the second picture is Oreo now at 10.

I just found out that the Atlanta Humane Society is having a Pet Parade in Candler Park this Saturday April 14th. Festivities start at 9 AM and include events like Doggie Musical Chairs and an Owner/Pet Look Alike Contest. See link for details:

Sorry the link is so long.

Meet & Greet BPOers / Re: SE Meet-N-Greet this coming weekend

I'm going to try to make it out Saturday. I have outpatient surgery on Friday and it will all depend on how I feel. Oreo most likely will not make it out. He'd love to run with the young'uns, but his hips won't let him. Please, keep me posted on events.

I don't know what everyone else is thinking, but the distance doesn't put me off too much.  Lets do this ... anyone post any hotels that are closer than 20 miles from Piedmont park, with no dog limits, or weight limits, and we can check them out.  We do want to make sure we're somewhere safe though, with plenty of parking and potty room.  And we want to move quick.

Sound good guys?

Check out this link:
http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/uscities/guides/us/cities/usonlinecityGAAtlanta.shtml

Most of these listings are within 10 miles of the city and all are within 15. Plus, they seem to all be in safe areas. Of course, I am used to living in this city so your mileage may vary. As far as the multiple dog thing... I think you will have to call them about that.

Parking at the park can be challenging. Most of it is off-street and on the opposite side of the park from the dog park area.

Also, for what it's worth. The Master's Golf Tournament is in Augusta that weekend. Doesn't mean much for Atlanta traffic, but the airport will definitely be more crowded than normal. And normal at Atlanta airport is busy.

Oreo has almost always had raised feeders and it definitely has helped as he has gotten older. I must also add that he had bloat and torsion 5 years ago and I am 99.9% certain that it wasn't linked to raised feeding.

And I second the plant stand idea. We've been using these same inverted flower pots for 8 years now. They are sturdy, washable, and have a slight texture to them to resist the bowls from sliding too much.

Yep, he probably isn't hungry. Oreo has gone through these phases. I just adjust food quantity a bit for both meals. Oreo is eating Pinnacle Food now:

He seems to really like it.

Hahahahahaha, yup that would be the perfect test.

Hey Jason, how have you been.  I miss pics of Oreo.

Hey Tina,
I've been better. I started off 2007 with a herniated disc in my back and I'm still not back to normal. Almost, but not quite.

Oreo is doing OK. He's 10.5 YO now so some skin problems and hip problems, but he still wants to follow me everywhere. I'll try to get a pic posted in the next few days. It will give you an idea what Jack will look like in a few years.

That's a tempting offer, but if they really want to test the flooring, they should do a 12 foot hallway with a bend at the end. In our house, Oreo gets a running start from the bedroom to the hallway and digs his claws (brakes) into the wood to slow down just before the bend so he can make his turn.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Dog ramps and such
« on: December 07, 2006, 05:16:18 am »

By the way, nice to see you Jason. I miss seeing pics of you & the handsome Oreo.

Jamie,
I try to check in every once in a while to see what's going on. As far as posting pictures of Oreo, he has become rather camera shy in his old age. I'll see if he will pose for a picture tonight.
By the way, the site looks great. You and Michael are doing a great job. And Bear looks as awesome as ever.

Holy crap! The laundry basket is a great idea. Does it really support a 130 lb dog? I guess a heavy duty version probably would. Tomorrow, I will be making a visit to Target to step on some laundry baskets. While I am out, I'll visit PetSmart and see what they have on the shelves.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. And keep them coming. I love hearing how other people find resourceful ways around challenges.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Dog ramps and such
« on: December 06, 2006, 05:12:26 am »
It's that time of year again when we load up the truck and head 700 miles north for Christmas. I think Oreo loves to go on this annual trip because he gets to lay in front of the fireplace at my parents' house and roast his bottom. My dilemna this year is that he is increasingly having problems getting in and out of my truck. He seems to be reluctant to jump in or out and I think it is hurting his joints. If it is only once in a while, he can usually do it, but on a long trip like this, he will be in and out of the truck at least 6 or 7 times.

So I think it is time to get a ramp or other device to give him a little help. I constructed one from wood a few years ago that sort of work, but it proved to be very heavy and awkward to handle so I ditched it. Does anyone out there have a suggestion for a ramp suitable for large breeds. It doesn't even need to be a ramp... a 6-8 inch high platform would probably help tremedously. Oreo is a bit skittish, so my criteria is that if I would feel unsure/unsafe on it, he will hate it. Also, portability and economy are important too.

Thanks for any advice.

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Do your Dogs eat Grass?
« on: September 10, 2006, 02:04:13 am »
Oreo eats grass too. Sometimes he goes at it like he hasn't had a meal in weeks. If I catch him eating it like that, he stays out until it comes back up. Most of the time he just grabs a little bit and that's it.
