Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: My New Topic - What Moves You?
« on: June 30, 2005, 08:25:55 am »
Music has always been a big part of my life and I like to think I keep an open mind and ear toward everything. But as far as what MOVES me to.....

Dance: Latin jazz (Rueben Gonzalez, Bebo and Chucho Valdes, Chacaito), Django (Django Reinhardt, Pearl Django), Los Lobos, Big Band Jazz
Weep: Mahler's 5th Symphony, Brahm's Requiem, Nina Simone
Reflect: Chet Baker, Tom Waits, John Coltrane, film music by Jon Brion
Relax: Miles Davis cool period, Cassandra Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Hartman, Lyle Lovett
Strength: Bjork, Beethoven, AC/DC, Peter Gabriel's music for film (Passion and Long Walk Home), Queen

grumpybunny- which A-ha video? "The sun always shines.." was a favorite of mine.  And I agree with Ranger, Bhangra does sound like squirrels and it will definitely make you move your hips.

yes yes, memphis is HUGE. but your boy, Oreo, is gorgeous. How old is he???
My boy zeus, who passed, was 35inch. at the withers and 120lbs... he was kinda skinny... he was a rescue

Thank you. Tough to say when his exact birthdate is, but Oreo is 8+ now. I got him as a rescue when he was almost two. He has a little different look for a dane, because his former owner had his ears cropped..... poorly. So his ears folded over and creased. It gives him a much squarer head.

OOP. heres a pic to show his height. hes in the back, standing up beside the table. Zeussy is on the right and Little Zero on the left.

Wow! Memphis is a big one. Oreo was afraid of the tape measure so I had to mark the wall and measure there. 35 in at the whithers (if I measured correctly). 39.5 in at the top point of his head. 138 pounds. I guess he can wrestle in the heavy weight class.

Here is a nice perspective shot from moving day that makes him look gi-normous next to this 40 gallon tupperware countainer.

Welcome to Big Paws everyone. I had to read your post again because the first time I thought it said your Jack Russell was a search and rescue dog.  :D But upon reading again, I realized it was the German Shephards. I really have to work on my reading comprehension skills.

So how old are your canine counterparts?

Welcome Sam and Rudy. Rudy looks like he has the same manipulative eyebrows my dane has. The one eyebrow up means "why are you interupting my nap with that camera." I've seen it many times before.

Welcome aboard Alaturka. BPO is a great place to hang out with other dog lovers. It sounds like you have pretty much dedicated your life to dogs. We like people with that type of dedication and passion for our canine friends.

So can you tell us more about the Anatolian Shephard? There is a little bit of info in the BigPawPedia, but I think it conflicts with your description a bit.

Jason,

I love your new avatar.

Tina

Thanks Tina. I had a great pic of my boy, but his other eye was a weird glazed over green dot. Instead of fixing it, I figured I would be kind of artsy.

Nat,
By all means talk to your neighbor after you calm down a bit and gather your thoughts. I mean, if they are as nice as you say, and you explain the situation, I'm sure they will be apologetic and try to resolve the issue. If they need to see proof, have them examine Leo. If you feel their dog should only be outside on leash or fenced, ask for it. If they think that is crazy, explain to them that the next victim could be a young child unable to defend themselves. Maybe that will make them understand that you are not just protecting your dog, but their own liability.

Hope Leo is feeling better and you have had a chance to calm down. Everything will be OK. Just talk to them.

I will have to second the motion on The Incredibles. But, of course, Pixar will always give you a fine story and good characters (Toy Story 2 was actually my favorite). But the best movie I saw last year was Finding Neverland. Just a beautiful movie all the way around.

I'm not much of a Mel Gibson fan, but I had to watch The Patriot because someone mentioned a Great Dane in it that looked like mine.

One of my favorite movies, though is Amores Perros ( translated- Love's a b****). It is gut wrenching, emotional, and heart-breaking at times, but incredibly well done. And it displays the great bond that humans can have with their dogs. A warning though: The movie contains fake dog-fights and blood and the way it is filmed makes everything look very real, but no animals were hurt in the making of the film. It is not everyone's cup of tea (and it is subtitled), but a very different film from the traditional hollywood stuff.

My sister has a female shih-tzu that is petrified of my great dane,Oreo. I don't really think it is a large dog/small dog thing as much as that she was never really socialized with other dogs. She was the queen of the house. So most of the time she hides under tables to avoid Oreo. Other times, she will try to pick a fight. Once she even took a flying leap off the bed to attack Oreo. And, of course, he ran to the other end of the house.

Dogs have a natural way of figuring out the leader of the pack. As long as you and/or your boyfriend hold that role, you should have no problem with additional dogs or children. If your shih-tzu rules the house... well, I can't help you there.

There is an annual festival in Atlanta called the Dogwood Festival that marks the coming of spring and the blossoming of the Dogwood trees. It also became a festival that catered to dogs and dog lovers around the area. A few years back, because of some new laws, they posted signs that no dogs were allowed at the Dogwood Festival. The exception was the dogs that were competing in the frisbee catching competition. Go figure. They have events that center around canines, but don't allow them at the festival otherwise. I boycotted the festival for a few years, but decided to attend this year without my dog. I have to say, the festival was not even half the event without the dogs and I will never attend again.

We have a thin carpet/mat in front of the water bowl since that is where 95 percent of the post drink drool ends up.

Of course as I write this, Oreo has just drooled all over my computer keyboard. I guess that accounts for the other 5 percent.

My mom was a bit hesitant about letting Oreo in her house when I first got him. She eventually came around after meeting him at my home and seeing what a well behaved pooch he is. Of course, my sister's Schi-zsu was welcome in mom's house without question. The dog with the history of chewing wood furniture and molding, the dog that poops on the rug directly in front of you, the dog who barks obnoxiously at dinner time to receive HER share of YOUR meal, the 10 pound ball of fur that launches an aerial attack on my pooch from the top of the sofa.

Now we are all allowed to roam freely around the house. Except my Uncle Gus. He has to stay outside. ;)

pat, pat, pat on the back, back, back....

I second the motion on the dremel tool for nails.

Hey, nic! It is possible that Angus stands/walks funny because of the long nails. I think that was another factor contributing to Oreo's goofy walk as well.
