General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / DIY Dog Beds
« on: August 14, 2009, 11:33:20 am »
I just wanted to share that after searching and finding only expensive options (that weren't even big enough), I turned to BPO.  I did a search for "dog bed" and found several topics on them.  One BPOer had the brilliant idea to use crib mattresses as dog beds!  Being that I have never had a baby, this option had not occured to me.  So I did a search and found that walmart had some for $40.  I bought 2 and covered them with sheets and som old blankets and my guys love them!  ;D

I agree!  Little dogs are great dogs if they are trained.  My best friend has a chihuahua whos is very well trained and I love him!  He even plays well with by two boys.  My Wicket LOVES little dogs!  Its pretty funny to see a 100lb great pyr enamored with a 7lb chihuahua  :D ;D

AWWW! He is TOO CUTE! :D

He looks similar to my Murphy! Murphy is a Great Pyr/Husky Mix and is currently 4 months old and weighs 40lbs.  Murph's dad was full great pyr and his mom was full husky, and he also has the double dews.  Maybe he has some husky in him? :)

Just another quick story.  When I was at the vet's office this morning, there was this little maltese there as well.  The minute I walked in with Murphy, this dog started to go nuts! She was barking, snapping, and growling non-stop.  All her owner did was say (in a voice barely above a whisper)"Maggie hush."  That's it!  That dog did not stop barking until it went into the exam room. Ugg... ::)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Allergic Reaction...

So this morning I wake up to find my little guy, Murphy, with his whole face swollen up!  :o  His eyes were swollen the worst, they looked about the size of golf balls.  Needless to say I was scared to death!  I immediatley loaded him in the car and took off to the vet.  I was a bit optimistic because he was wagging his tail and didn't seem to be in shock.  The vet thinks that he got stung by something, but we couldn't find any stingers left behind.  Which makes me think it might be yellow jackets, because they can sting you and not leave their stinger behind. Vet gave him a shot and some pills to take at home and said that he will be fine.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I used to want a little dog.  Until I worked at a dog baording and daycare.  I grew to dread going into the "little dog" room during daycare.  90% of those dogs were so badly behaved!  I even go peed on once!  And every day when there owners would pick them up I could see why the dogs were the way they were.  Their owners never corrected bad behavior (like growling or biting), they would either laugh or say that we weren't doing our jobs!  Another thing that really peeves me off is how owners of little dogs will say things like "OH! Don't let that big monster anywhere near my little princess!" When their little princess is looking like cujo and my gentle giant is scared to death!  I don't think that little dog owners understand that big dog owners love our dogs just the same as they love theirs and that they are princes/princesses too!  I am not saying this about all little dogs and their owners, just the majority that I have had run-ins with.

So sorry for your loss  :'(. Our prayers and thoughts are with you!

I get "Who's walking who?" a lot too! >:( Just because they are big dogs doesn't mean they aren't well-behaved.

That is so true! Those questions are MEGA-irritating!

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Dog Ramp
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:55:18 pm »
We ended up making one ourselves!  My hubby is very handy  ;)! It took some coaxing for Wicket to finally go up the ramp and he was hesitant to come back down at first.  But now he seems to be just fine with it! Murphy had no problem at all, he just went right up the ramp and into the car, then looked at me like "ok mom, now what?" :D.

Rota is such a cutie! ;D My 2 boys love the water!  We take them swimming at a local dog park and they love going creek crawling (hiking through the creek).  I can't wait to take them to the beach someday, but that would be a road trip because the nearest one is 5 hours away ::).  Does the salt water bother him at all?

Which Essential oil did you try?  I have a blend that is for insect repellent.  This recipe uses Young Living oils, you can check out their website at www.younglivin g.com

Insect Repellent

10 Drops Citronella
10 Drops Purification
10 Drops Eucalyptus globulus
10 Drops Peppermint
8 Ounces of water

Drop the essential oils into the water in a spray bottle or other 8oz container and shake well.

You could also try feeding her garlic, flies hate garlic!
Hope this helps!
