General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Too Many Accidents!!!! - RANT
« on: October 27, 2005, 09:17:49 pm »
Sorry just have to rant and rave a minute... >:(

Riley is over a year old and he's been having way too many accidents in the house!!!  It makes me soooo angry.  Like last night, when I catch him, its not like I can make him stop - he just keeps goin - pees a whole freakin river!  (Only pee - he hasn't pooed in the house for months thank God!)  And it only happens when we have him out and about in the house.  I mean when we are at work, he has a small area in the office blocked off with a baby gate, where he has his bed and thats pretty much it - so of course he won't go there.  Its just so frustrating.  And I've read that his breed is slow to housetrain, but it just sucks.  Seems like anytime I think "Gee Riley has been so good lately" - he surprises me.  Just had to get that off my chest.

Food Discussion & Information / Home-Made Doggy Treats
« on: October 25, 2005, 09:33:06 pm »
Hey All,

I've read about a lot of BPOers making homemade treats for their little ones and I've decided I'd like to give it a try.  Please share your favorite homemade doggy treat recipe so Riley can try some good old-fashioned homemade treats!   :)

Hey everyone, I need some advice.  Before Riley, I've never owned a dog, so I don't know if this is normal or not.  A couple of weeks ago, we were sitting in the living room and Riley was on the floor next to us.  All of the sudden, we noticed he started licking his nose... excessively and would not stop.  Next thing we know, he is licking the floor/carpet like crazy.  Almost felt like he was trying to swallow or something.  He just kept sticking his tongue out and licking his nose non-stop.  I tried giving him some water, but this didn't really help.  He did this for like 5-10 minutes then stopped.  That was the last of it, so I wasn't worried BUT he did this again a few days ago.  And now its been 3 nights in a row and I'm freaking out.  What could this be?  Should I call a vet???  :'(

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Discussions / We finally fenced the backyard!!!
« on: September 27, 2005, 01:51:28 am »
I just had to share the exciting news!  We just had our new wooden fence installed yesterday and for the first time this morning, we let Riley out without a leash!!!  He was sooo excited, running around the entire yard!  It was great!  Now the only thing is trying to get him back in!  We were almost late to work this morning cause we couldn't get him back in the house! :)

Sidenote - Twice last week (once with me, once with hubby), after he was done doing his business, I unhooked the leash about 5 feet from the back door.   In my instance, I opened the back door and called him in...  he just stared at me and waited for me to make a move.  As soon as I took a step toward him, he dashed through the walkway to the front of the house.  I knew if I chased him, he would run, so I picked up his food bowl and after a few minutes, he followed me thank God!  Unfortunately in my husband's instance, he made the mistake of chasing him and chased him halfway down the street.  Luckily there was a couple outside with their little mojo that distracted him and we caught him.

This is why I am so psyched to have a fence!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Really Dry Paws!
« on: September 08, 2005, 09:28:14 am »
Hi All,

Need some advice.  Riley's paws are REAAAAAAAALLLY dry.  Is that normal?  Is it bad?  I mean like sand-paper dry.  If its not normal, what can I do to soften them up?   ???

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Discussions / Got punched in the schnoz!
« on: September 06, 2005, 12:23:11 pm »
Interesting experience while trimming nails!

The other day, I was using the new nail trimmer to cut Riley's nails (or "Corn Nuggets" as my husband calls them).  After I was done, Riley and I were chilling in the living room.  I was watching tv, and he was sitting next to me by the couch, so I started petting him and scratching his chest.  Of course he gets this glazed look in his eyes.  After a little while, I stopped - and you know what happens when you stop petting a happy, comfy, huge dog?  Paws start flying!  You know, the kind where he starts pawing at you meaning "hey why did you stop???  keep scratching momma!"  Yeah well, I got a nice big freshly cut doggie nail in the face!  Thats right, punched me square in the nose and gave me a little scratch too!   :o  Man that hurt!!  AND on top of that, I've got tons of little scratches on top of my feet from his big-ole-paws walking all over me!   :D

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Discussions / Birthday

Today is Riley's first birthday!!!  I can't even believe it!

Usually, when I go anywhere with Riley, people ooh and aah at him because he is such a rare breed and also cause hes huge.  But there always seem to someone who is scared (understandable since hes so big), and I am always aware of my surroundings, making sure not to get too close to people who look frightened.

Last night, I took Riley to the vet for part 2 of his lyme vaccination.  We walk in, and there is a woman with a kitty in a carrier and then another woman sitting there, staring at me with this mean "oh my god, look at the size of that monster" look in her face.  Obviously I could tell that she was afraid of Riley and didn't want anything to do with him.  After talking to the receptionist, I looked back and she was still giving me the same dirty look - WE'RE AT THE FRICKIN VET FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!  So I say to her, "hes a really nice dog".  She just gave me attitude and with the worst boston accent I've heard, she says to me "puttem ova theyaaa" pointing to the other side of the room.   I wanted to knock her out, but I nicely said "ok."

Riley is the sweetest dog in the world and wouldn't hurt a fly, but just because of his size, people stereotype - I HATE THAT!  Makes me so mad!  >:(

Anything Non-Dog Related / Looking for a Kitty in Toronto
« on: August 29, 2005, 02:31:55 pm »
My grandmother lives in Scarsborough Ontario and really really wants a kitty.  I live in Boston and am driving up to Toronto with my mom in a couple of weeks for a wedding.  Instead of finding a kitty here in Boston and having the poor thing stuck in the car with me in a carrier for 10 hours, I was thinking I could find a kitty from the Toronto area and pick it up on my way to my Grandmothers!  Does anyone know of a 1-2 year old kitty in the Toronto area that needs a home?  Gender doesn't matter, we would preferred spayed/neutered and up to date on shots.  I've checked Petfinder and there isn't much, and I'd rather not deal with a shelter because I'm only going to be up there for a few days and things will probably be really hectic with wedding events the entire weekend.  If you know of a kitty that needs a home in the Toronto area, please let me know!

PS.  My grandmother is 67 retiring and really wants a companion kitty!

Thanks!

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Discussions / Kind of Embarassing
« on: August 26, 2005, 01:02:17 pm »
We've been pretty lucky - Riley has never humped anything in the house before (not a stuffed animal, not the table leg, not OUR legs, not our 2 cats).  However, about a month ago, a friends Yellow Lab came over to play and Riley tried to hump it multiple times!!!  AND, last week, when we had a playdate with a Great Dane, Riley tried to hump it too!!!  Both dogs were older than Riley.  It was soooooo embarassing.  :o  The weirdest part is, all three of them are neutered males!  Explain that!   ???

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Pictures / Riley's Playdate with Sir Bronson!
« on: August 26, 2005, 10:03:21 am »
Up until last week, the only interraction Riley ever had with a dog bigger than him was with a harlequin dane named Lola at the dog park, but only for a few minutes.  Last week a friend and I decided that our two dogs should meet for a playdate.  After the initial butt-sniffing, they had a blast!!  Here are some pictures of Riley and Sir Bronson!
