Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Dog Crates
« on: March 30, 2005, 04:51:04 pm »
With Lucy I crated her at home for about 6 months. I needed to know she was safe (and out of trouble) while I was at work. In the beginning Lucy was like a puppy as she is an ex-racer. She was learning how to be a family dog instead of a working dog. For the last 3 months she is free while I'm gone. I've had no problem with her out of the crate. For the first week or so I just kept the door open, and most days I would find her in there when I returned. However she has discovered the joys of window watching, most days she waiting in the window when I get home. I also can tell that she sleeps on her dog bed, couch, and my bed while I'm gone. I don't think she can decide where she wants to sleep, so she tries them all out!!! LOL I don't mind. One thing though, i do have a small room in my apt. It's one of those rooms you have no idea what it really is for. Too small for a bedroom, and in a strange place for a dining room, (it's really too small to be that too!) However, I've renamed it Lucy's Room. She has all her toys and a ton of blankets on the floor. When she hangs out in there, I leave her alone. She needs her space sometimes. Also too, I've moved her crate to my Boyfriends house. When we leave to go out for a couple of hours, I always crate her there. She has no problems being crated, and I feel better knowing she's in there while we are out.
That's my 2 cents.

copied from the akc.org website.....

Greyhound History
The Greyhound is one of the most ancient breeds known to man, and can be traced to almost every country on every continent on the globe. The first evidence of the breed was discovered in Egypt, with carvings in old tombs dating back to 2900 and 2751 B.C. depicting dogs of unmistakable Greyhound type attacking deer and mountain goats. While these Egyptian scenes established Greyhounds at a very early date the first complete description of the breed comes from a Roman source, written by Ovid, who lived from 43 B.C. to A.D.17. There is little doubt that the dog of ancient times is the same as the one we know today.

Aristocracy and culture has always surrounded the Greyhound, and in early times royalty only bred them. England has played an important role in the development of the breed, with the first illustrations dating back to the 9th century. It was used on practically all kinds of game from deer, stags, foxes and such, but the hare is the Greyhound's natural quarry. Formal coursing events came on the scene over two centuries ago.

In America, Greyhounds can be traced back to the 1500's, brought in by Spanish explorers to "guard, hunt, intimidate and punish their enemies-in this case, the Indians". During the American Revolution, a huge Greyhound named Azor always accompanied George Washington. Greyhounds were among the first dogs recorded at American dog shows, with an entry of 18 exhibited at the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1877. They were in the second edition of the AKC Stud Book in 1885 with listings of three males and five bitches. Today the breed's most valued trait is companionship - a lovely dog with a lively personality.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Dog friendly places
« on: March 23, 2005, 02:39:53 pm »
Windsor ON has two dog parks... (fenced in areas) Where I can let Lucy run like the wind... Also Oakland County MI has a couple of "bark parks" that are not too far away that we'll go to. (they are a couple of acres) However, we do not have any stores/pubs that will allow our dogs to join us... Boy would Lucy love that!!!!  ;D

Over here in New Jersey....it's getting harder and harder to find pet friendly places...
slowely but surely are parks are even starting to stop allowing them....they say it is too much of a risk.  I just want a place to go where my Zach and my daughter Gwen can play together....

We found two places....one is a small park that allows dog on leashes anywhere...the other allows dogs on the path but not near the playgrounds... .so I walk the dog while my husband plays with my daughter....it just doesn't seem fair....Zach and Gwen love to play with eachother....h e even goes down the slide with her...it's too cute...

I've never seen this show, I don't think, unless it's the ones w/ the famous judges?

Anyway, some of my dogs various and assorted talents include:

Sitting on the couch on his butt while his front feet are on the floor so that he can watch tv in comfort.

Rolling in the grass at least 6 times a day (More if he just had a bath). ::)

Going for tractor rides. 8)

Chasing squirrels (a long-time favorite!) ;D

Snoring. :-X

Helping to clean sliding glass doors by licking them clean. :(

Shaking his head sending drool flying.  (Even onto the ceiling.) ???

Walking back and forth in the back of the Jeep causing it to rock sideways. ::)

The perenniel spring time favorite...get ting sprayed by a skunk (twice). :'(

But his best trick is just being his old lovable self.  Wouldn't trade him for all the dogs who can do fancy tricks in the world!   :)
