Mixed Breed Discussion / Dumb Question
« on: March 09, 2008, 10:17:15 pm »
OK, I have a dumb question...  Ranger potentially ate a bunch of Kleenex today - should I be concerned, or am I just doing my usual overly paranoid freak-out?

I found the chewed, (but remarkably still intact), Kleenex box on the floor when I got home from work, but not any chewed-up Kleenex.  So, I assume that the culprit devoured the evidence, because I can't find it anywhere else.  (I also assume it was Ranger, because that just ain't Gwen's style.  Plus he has been "acting out" a bit lately in the chewing paper-towel-ish type items department.)  I honestly can't remember if there were 2 Kleenex or 200 Kleenex in the box.

He is acting normal and of course, I am keeping an eye on him.  Should I be freaking as much as I am?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: I have a problem

He will now INTENTIONALLY pick something up he shouldn't have because he knows if he drops it he'll get a treat.

Oh boy, can I sympathize with this one!

When I first started letting Ranger play tug-of-war, I would give him a treat for letting go of his toy on command, because I wanted him to learn to "give it".  At least that is what I thought I was teaching him. Apparently, I actually taught him the concept of "trade".

Now whenever I have something he wants (oh, say like... every dinner time) he will go find a toy and bring it to me so that he can "trade" it for the better "treat".  He will drop it and kind of push it towards me and dart his eyes back and forth between the toy and the "treat", like "Hey, check out this awesome pink bunny.  Sure is better than that potato chip.  Maybe we could work a little something out".  He thinks he is being subtle, but it is SO obvious.  Depending on what kind of mood I am in, I either tell him "good trade" and give him something, or "no trade" and deny him.  He doesn't try to trade forbidden items, though.

You have great advice from everyone else - I am just here to sympathize 'cause I am right there with you every night!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: OMG Sh*T UP PEOPLE!!!!

Bwaahaahaaahaa a!  Chiapuffapoo!  That is perfect...

I totally agree Tina - it is usually a little dog that is going after Ranger, rather than the other way around.  As far as them being lunch for him, it is just the opposite. He likes the little guys - it's the other BIG dogs he wants to put in his mouth!  :D

And why do the owners of the little dogs that are attacking think it is super cute?  ???

Kana is a very specific breed of Akita-retreiver...He only fetches and brings back 3-5 times.  After that, you may as well be playing fetch with a snake.  He always looks at me as if to say, "Uh...how about YOU go get one this time!"  :D
He's smart!  He figures if you throw something away 3-5 times, you don't WANT it back!  ;D

Ranger did get the bunny for a bit, with a very disgruntled Gwen in the background...

Well, I went to the biggest dog show that we have in this area today and I had a great time.  (I am working on getting over going places by myself).

I spent A LOT of time loving on the Pyrs in the meet-the-breed area - I was on the floor rubbing one little girl's belly while a big boy leaned his booty on my shoulder. Saw beautiful Danes, Newfies, Irish Wolfhounds, Bull Mastiffs, 2 gorgeous Leonbergers and so on.  I really wanted to see a Tibetan Mastiff in person (there were 3 entered) but I didn't get there early enough.  I did pet a Spinone and several Ibizan Hounds, neither of which I had ever met before.  (Of course I forgot to take the camera).

And, of course, I bought stuff.  The favorite seems to be a bright pink fleece bunny.  The game for the rest of the night round here is Win The Bunny.  Here are some pictures...

1) Ranger and Gwen vie for the bunny
2) Gwen wins the bunny and is a brat when Ranger gets near
3) Rangers investigates just how close he can get to the bunny before Gwen freaks. (Note the presence of several other toys in the vicinity, which are not good enough for him to play with because they are NOT THE BUNNY.

Ranger eventually retired to the couch to lick the arm of the couch and plan his revenge.  The bunny will be his eventually.  Gwen has to sleep sometime...

I can censor with a black bar, if you like.   :P

He lets me sit up there with him, but if I stop petting he kicks me with his back feet.

(Naja - Ranger says "How YOU doing?", while music plays in the background.  Bom-chick-a-bom-bom.)

Gwen is a simple dog.  She is happy to lay on the floor, in the crate, or on her dog bed.  Sometimes my bed, if the mood strikes.

Ranger is another story.  Not only can he never be too comfortable, he is obsessed with my couch pillows and snuggles up to them at every opportunity.

He's not quite ready for Playdog...

He is a cutey pie!  I like the name Lucca, but if you are looking for a male name to go with Frida, you could always call him Diego...   :)

Oh my gosh, hun.  What a horrible decision to have to make, and how hard to have to make it on your own.  I am so sorry for the loss of that sweet girl.  Sometimes there is just no rhyme or reason for why things happen.  Try to hang in there, we're here for you.

I'm so sorry.  Poor Zoey.  Poor you.  You are a great mom to her, don't think any different.  Just take it day by day.

Apparently, while I was posting earlier, the chair got hungry.  The kind of hungry only a dog named Ranger can satisfy.

I guess it didn't have time to finish digesting him before I turned around.

Never trust wicker.  ;D
