My son's second birthday party is today. I know it's short notice, but do you think Ranger could book Elmo for us? That would ROCK!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!  Have your people call his people.  We'll see what he can do!

It's great that someone posted this - I just got home and found it in my email inbox and was going to do so.  Very touching story...

Ranger says "Thank you, Auntie Jenn".  You just give and give.

James Avery was really a lovely man, very sweet to Ranger.  He said he had dogs at home, but I don't think I ever found out what kind...

Mixed Breed Discussion / Ranger's Story - A Tail of Celebrity Obsession
« on: January 26, 2008, 01:11:57 am »
I have a confession to make.  It's about Ranger, and it ain't pretty.  The Roo is on a rocky road to heartbreak.  Yes, Ranger is a fame whore.  He is a slut for celebrities.

It all started one day when we were walking in the park, and the actor who played The Grinch at the theatre I work at petted and payed attention to Ranger during a rehearsal break.  (You were there, Auntie Holly, remember?  We thought the guy might be an escaped mental patient because he was all sweaty and disheveled and dressed strangely and wearing what looked like electrodes taped to his body?  But that was just his mic.  Silly us.)  Ranger liked it.  Liked it a lot.  It felt good.  Better than regular petting.

His next encounter was a crush on a local news man doing a live weather segment in the park.  He wanted to pet Ranger, Ranger wanted to be petted by him.  But their love was not to be - Weatherguy had to go on the air and they were only able to strain towards each other longingly before we had to move away.  From then on every time we saw Weatherguy on TV, Ranger would perk up and pay attention.  If we saw him in the park, Ranger would try to go to him.  He even tried to jump into the open news van a couple times.  Still, it might have worked out if Ranger had not met another.

The man who stole Ranger's heart was James Avery.  That's right - Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.  He was appearing in one of our shows, and would be sitting outside the theatre every night around the time that Scott would bring the dogs down to pick me up from work.  At first their love was slow.  Tentative.  James Avery was in a wheelchair due to a leg injury, and Ranger gives the hard love.  But Ranger would not be denied.  He demanded to be noticed.  He showed the belly and clinched the deal.  Soon Ranger was getting that sweet sweet Uncle Phil petting every night.  It was Ranger's longest celebrity relationship to date.

When James Avery left, I thought things were back to normal.  Things calmed down.  Ranger stopped saying that celebrity hands just "feel different".  He stopped wearing a pashmina, draped just-so.  If I wanted to pet my dog, I didn't have to pretend to be my own agent and schedule a meeting.  I could breathe easy again.  Then Harvey Firestein called him "cookie" in the hallway one day, and it all came flooding back.

Now, we have just learned that Scott Bakula is starring in our latest show.  I think it is a very good thing that Ranger and I will no longer be spending our free time in the park (due to the Great Homeless Ex-Fiance' Incident of 2008).

Bakula dodged a 100-lb. hairy bullet, and he doesn't even know it.  :D

Oh my gosh, that is adorable.  Did he really fall asleep with it in his mouth?

Heather, I'm sorry that happened.  Breaking up sucks whether you know it was for the best or not.  I am going through something similar right now, and I think you just have to get through it one day at a time.  You have to keep knowing that you did the right thing, even if the right thing feels really crappy right now.  It's not going to feel like this forever, no matter how it may seem.  It is definitely better to be alone than to be with the wrong person, even if it is hard to remember that when you are going through the being alone part.  And you aren't really alone - we are all here for you, any time you need us.

I am so in awe of you for telling him that you deserve to be loved and adored.  That is so true, and so wise of you to be able to articulate to him.  I think we all get in relationships where we settle for less (I think my picture is in the dictionary next to this one), and you are my idol for being able to say "enough".  I have a hard time with that one, and only recently learned (very painfully) how to say it.  Stay strong.  You do deserve better and it is worth how ever long it takes to find it.

I also support the macaroni and cheese.  But if you get to the point where you are eating cake frosting straight out of the can with a spoon, please call me.  I will talk you down.  Us single girls with Roo dogs have got to have each others backs!

Interesting.  I know she has been having trouble with her manufacturer and that is why is has been impossible to get canned Solid Gold, but I wonder what the deal is... Thanks for looking that up.

It's going to be awhile, but I think it will either be a Pyr, Leonberger, Tibetan Mastiff or Bull Terrier.

(What? That's narrowed down from the 20 or so I had before...)  :D

Did she address dog vs dog tug? That is really where my concern lays.
I don't recall her saying anything against it...

As long as they get the "give" command and that you are the boss of what ever happens to be getting tugged there should be no harm.
I agree - I think tugging is fine, as long as the dog relinquishes the "prize" immediately when told.  I don't really think my guys think of getting sole possesion of whatever we are tugging on as "winning" - the first thing they do is push it right back at me for more tugging.

Jean Donaldson addresses this in her book "The Culture Clash".  I loaned my copy to someone and haven't gotten it back, but I think her basic theory is that it is ok.  Tugging, she says, is more of a cooperative behavior between dogs (i.e. tugging to bring down prey together) or a play behavior than it is a dominant behavior.  If a dog wants something another dog has he doesn't go and tug on it to get it away from him - he threatens him, or exerts his dominance in other ways until the other dog leaves the item.  She says tug is a great bonding experience between dog and human under two conditions - 1) the dog lets go when told  2) if teeth touch skin, even accidentally, the game ends immediately.

OK, have I bored you all yet?   ;D

That is way too exciting!  I am in love with a Tibetan Mastiff named Murphy who is on the Tibetan Mastiff rescue site right now.  There is no way I will ever be able to have all the breeds I want, but TM's are right up there near the top.  That is great that you have taken the first steps - how cool that you get to go see her dogs!

I am not a football fan, but obviously the game was a big deal here.  I let my staff listen to the radio while the game was on, and I swear I almost saw a couple of my guys cry when we lost.  (I think they also really wanted to smack me when I asked "So, was this an important game?")  ;D
