Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: Photos of Gandalf

We named him Gandalf because we were hoping he would mature into Gandalf the White, you know all wise and calm etc. We have a year or two to go... :-\ He is super fun to have around. The other guy in the picture is Max. He went to chase cats in the other world in April. We really miss him. Gandalf was so bummed until he realized he was now "THE ONE!" Must be time to get a few more :o ! Wouldn't want him to get too spoiled. Maybe I can start the first Pyr ranch in Alaska!

LMAO If I come back as a cat I hope you come back as a mouse! I'm happy to hear all of you did so much"paw" work on this toxic thing. I too have only heard onions and chocolate agreed on by everyone. I was working at my vet hospital for a while and we had a call that someone's bull dog ate 6 doz. chocolate chip cookies! The vet laughed and said just keep an eye on the dog, and probably keep it outside because it was going to need frequent trips to the yard! :o

The worst thing Gandalf has eaten besides some chicken he got out of the basement trash >:( , was when he was in recovery on our basement, 6 weeks he spent on the family room floor and in his crate, with me sleeping beside him. I was on medication that is also used for depression, and he got ahold of the Rx bottle and ate the last 3 or 4 pills! My kids said he was just trying to feel better about being locked up in the basement for so long! The vet had me mix up baking soda and water and force him to drink it. Then I had to take him outside and shake his belly up. Well, I can say I NEVER want to have to induce vomitting on a Pyr again :P

I also want to say that I am having so much fun with all of you on this site, and I've only been here @ a week. And if I do come back as a cot or dog, I hope to see all of you at the doggy park!

I am surprised that garlic and garlic powder are on the list. Our trainer had suggested garlic powder mixed with cheerios as a treat ??? Even my doggy cookbooks use garlic or garlic powder as an ingredient in many of the receipes. The same trainer did tell us that onions were very deadly. Well, we have tried to be mor careful with what we feed Gandalf.

Thanks for the information. I have saved it for future reference.

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: Great Pryness Barking Problems
« on: June 02, 2005, 08:03:03 pm »
Gandalf's barking was the one thing that has almost caused a divorce, and my searching the house for a shotgun to use on a "blankity blank" neighbor lady >:( (I use the term lady because bitch is too good for her!) Anyway, my hsuband finally convinced me to have him de-barked. It was an expensive surgery, and it didn't take! I miss the deep WOOF now ists more of a whoop, but now everyone realizes he only barks when he thinks there is danger. We live in a neighborhood with LOTS of screaming kids, and barking dogs. My husband is actually selling the house and we are looking for rural property so Gandalf can bark at all the true dangers, and he won't feel the need to protect the entire community!

We also covered the bottom half of all the windows with that tacky contact paper for bathroom windows, our trainer suggested it. It really works, and it kinda grows on you after awhile. No curtains to mess with!

Good luck!

We went through the same thing with Gandalf when he was younger, and he still has some issues. When he was little, he did have knee problems, but he is still afraid of heights.

Once when Gandalf was about 5 months old, he got onto the top of the picnic table, by walking on to it from the upper level of our deck. The neighbor said he heard Gandalf crying like he was in pain. The neighbor ran around to the back yard and saw this BIG puppy too scared to step down 6-8 inches to get off the table! After he finally stopped laughing, he was able to help Gandalf down off the table. Gandalf has NEVER gotten back up there again.

I want to keep that as a quote...All white things are addictive, cocaine, heroine, Great Pyrenees. I have been clean and sober for 7 years, and happy to say I truly can't give up my Pyr addiction. If there is a 12 step program for Pyr addicts DON'T TELL ME! lol

And yes I too love my Gandalf more and more every day! I have had other pets over the years, but he is my baby.

Gandalf was the biggest in puppy school, and of course he was totally intimadated by all the other puppies! We had our issues too. It does make a difference to have a trainer that knows Pyrs.

Gandalf was afraid of water too until he had knee surgery. Part of his rehab was walking on a treadmill in a water tank. Now we have tobe sure the bathroom door is closed securely, or he will try to get into the tub with us!

I don't wish surgery on Neo, but maybe you could try a few sessions at a dog PT place. If we have one or two in Anchorage, I'm sure you must have one on every corner of Seattle! lol

I have spent more time sleeping on the couch or on a matress on the floor in the past two years since we have had Gandalf. My kids and Mother-in-Law aren't real sure just who I care more about ::) I just remind them that if they listened as well as he does to me, I'd sleep on the driveway for them( if I had to!)

Oh the things we do for love.
