Bernard I just wanted to take a second to say hello and welcome to BPO! Your pup is adorable!

Like everyone said it's totally normal for puppies to loose their soft fuzzy fur and grow into their thick adult fur. Feel free to ask any other questions. And of course we want more pictures ;)

Cute!

I used to work at a pool that was by a lake and every morning we would have to catch a frog (or two - or four)  ;)

Oh my goodness! I have never seen such a bad hot spot, and what an odd place for it. I hope it gets better soon!

Like everyone else said, it's totally normal for lots of shedding, and brushing often and with the right brush will help. I would also reccomend a skin/coat supplement if you don't already give one - omega 3s supplements help with shedding a little, not to mention making the coat really nice.

The cheapest I've ever seen a large bed $30-40. I know BJs (similar to costco) has one, and I also have a great one from Target (much nice, but same price). I have two ideas for you instead of buying one if you really need to keep it under $25:

1. Do you know how to sew? If you do, I highly suggest you make you own. You can find a sturdy cheap fabric and buy a couple yards, then fold and sew with a velcro or ziper closing. Then stuff it with polyfill or foam.

2. My dogs have always loved to sleep on our old comfortors. If you have one or two comfortors you can use it as a thin bed (you could buy some at a thrift store and wash them if you don't have old ones).

She looks adorable up there :)

I am thinking a kidney infection too. You should have the vet run bloodwork to check the kidney function to make sure he isn't having acute renal failure

Did Miss Penny teach him this trick? :D ::)

We have a new fangled toilet that doesn't fill verty high so she prefers the "whole head in" approach ;)

I have heard the best things about LL Bean beds - they are supposed to be really good queality and have a great warranty like others have said.

I'm sticking with relatively cheap beds for now (cause of the pee), and my favorite so far has been a target indoor/outdoor one. It's really big and has stayed fluffy for months and it is really durable and was only $40.

When (if, lol) Penny gets huge I will probably make my own. Zoey's old bed was home-made with a really sturdy fabric. I bought a huge peice (4 yards), then folded it in half and double sewed the edges with sturdy yarn, and put a zipper on the last edge (alright, alright, I had someone else sew it saince I can't sew  ;)). Then I put a folded old comfortor and a box of polyfill into it.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Penny's pee problems
« on: July 09, 2008, 05:37:27 pm »
I'm not really worrying too much about the bacteria because I know they can try different antibiotics if she has an infection. But the diluted pee is what I'm really worried about since there is no explaination for why her pee would be too diluted when it was first thing in the morning.

On a practical note, I'm also worrying about getting her to the vet i the morning with a full bladder of first morning pee. How am I supposed to get her to the vet without her peeing on the way to the car, in the car, or in the vet's parking lot. She will pee as soon as we leave the house, so I'm thinking maybe I will carry her to the car, but that's a lot harder than it sounds when she's 50lbs and I won't have anyone with me to open and close the doors  :o

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Penny's pee problems
« on: July 09, 2008, 10:56:22 am »
Penny has these enlarged lady parts and the vet said they'd make her more prone to UTIs. So we weren't suprised a the other week when we decided we thought she had a UTI and the pee test showed white blood cells. But we were suprised when the vet said her pee was too diluted, which could either mean something perfectly harmless like she drank a lot of water before she peed (which I suspected) or a kidney function problem. So we made a plan of action that she would go on antibiotics and then when they were done we with them we would bring in a first thing in the morning pee sample which hopefully would show that the pee wasn't diluted and the infection was gone.

On Sunday Penny finished her 10 day dose of antibiotics, and so on Monday morning I collected her first pee and took it to the vet. I just got a call from the vet and she said it looked virtually the same as the first one: the pee is still diluted and there was still bacteria present.

So now I have to take her to the vet in the morning and they have to put a tube into her to get pee straight from her bladder (to make sure the bacteria wasn't from her skin of the cup, etc), and take a blood test (to check her kidney function). I am worried now because the vet thinks she might have either a bacteria-resistant infection, a congenital kidney disease, or both.  :-[
