Ok, this is somewhat related to summer cuts.  My landlords have an older (9) Pyr male who is strictly an outside dog.  Teddy gets no inside privelages & basically guards the driveway from...well... whatever he wants.  Anyway, the lords noticed a sore on his back, above his tail & upon further inspection, they found (hold on to your stomach) MAGGOTS!!!  Yes, MAGGOTS in his fur!  The flies had laid their eggs in his matted & damp fur and once they went to the vet, they found that he was COVERED in them.  I know, FREAKING DISGUSTING!  Anyway, poor Teddy had to be shaved.  Completely.  He now looks something like a combination between a pink donkey & a Q-Tip!  They left his massive head unshaved, but the rest of him is SKINNY, PINK and BALD!!!  During the day he has to wear an old t-shirt to protect him from sunburn.  I'll have to attach a photo...it's impossible to accurately describe what he looks like.  I feel really sorry for him, but he seems to have quite a spring in his step now that the skin problem has been fixed.

My Bo is usually friendly with EVERYONE she meets, but one time I was walking her in the neighborhood around my office & she went BONKERS about this guy and his Pit.  I mean, straining at the leash, growling, etc.  Totally unusual for her.  I thought that she was upset about the dog...unneuter ed male puppy, of course she'd be upset!  So I thought nothing of it until I mentioned it to one of my clients, who said that the man on the end of the Pit's leash had stabbed a homeless man on the river and had never been charged for it!!!  All this time I assumed it was the dog, when it was really the man!!  Needless to say, I learned to trust her judgement more than my own (I am far too trusting...occ upational hazard).  Anyway, that's just my two cents story to contribute to the discussion!

I am having Bo's "feathers" cut, since they often tend to get really matted.  She recently developed an abcess from a foxtail that got in behind a dreadlock & now has to have her whole left butt cheek shaved!  Yikes!  I also get her a "sanitary trim" because of the issue of certain bodily fluids that get caught in the long hair.  I don't shave her top or sides, just trim the backs of the legs & the genital area.  We live in a rural area in Northern California & the foxtails are MADNESS!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the invitation!  I've been looking for a "community" where I can learn from other Pyr people (or other Big Dog people, as I'm doing with BPO).  I look forward to joining up with y'all!!
Thanks, also, for the information about age-appropriate guarding behavior.  I also figured out that there's a stray cat that is lurking into our yard at night & I think that might be upsetting her applecart, so to speak!  She's a cat chaser...not killer, just chaser.

No changes that I know of!  The only thing that I can relate it to was that there were some problems with our neighbors (they had a creepy guy staying at their house), but that resolved itself a few weeks ago.  I pretty much chalked her recent change up to an age milestone.

My Bo is almost two (on 9/23) & she seems to be going through a change.  In the last few months or so, she's become more vigilant with her guarding behavior, especially at night.  She also has become WAY more protective of us when we're out in public, often barking at people if they approach us.  She's not aggressive, just noisy.  Anyway, this is a change for her, as she's normally not this vocal and/or hypervigilant.  I wanted to know if this was normal for Pyrs of this age range. I'm a first-time Pyr mom & I'm still trying to learn as much as I can about the breed.  I've read all the books, but we don't have a lot of Pyr people around here, so I'm putting it out to the BPO family to see what other pyr parents have seen in their young dogs.
Thanks!

Meet & Greet BPOers / Re: California get together

Yes, Allston is the park I was referring to. I don't think it's that bad...consider ing that there are few alternatives for contained play in our area.  I think that people have worked hard to make the park nice for everyone, and although Bo does get dirty while she's there, she always ends up having a good time & expending some of her excess puppy energy!  Are you from the area?  If you've got a suggestion for another park, I'd love to hear about it...I'm always up for a new dog park adventure!

Count me in, too!  I live in Napa Valley, about 1 1/2 hours from SF!! =)  I'm up for meeting other big dogs & their people!  Perhaps an email group should be set up so that we can just email each other directly?
If anyone is interested in coming up here, there is a nice dog park in Napa that has a large, fenced area for off-leash play (as well as many dog-friendly hotels & restuarants) and trails for hiking!

I think that with proper training, your dog will be a great service dog!  Bo is extremely attentive to me & is always aware of where I am in the house (or work, or the park).  Their size makes them perfect balance/movement service dogs, too.
Good luck!

I live in a relatively small town & EVERYONE stops me to ask about Bo!  Most frequently I get asked about how much she weighs (120lbs), how old is she (almost 2), and how big is her poop (huh?)!!  Sometimes I think I should wear a t-shirt with the answers to the F.A.Qs about my dog!! =)  She sure is an attention getter, though, and I'm really proud to be on the other end of the leash of such a majestic creature!

Separation anxiety is pretty common in guard dogs...we are their flock!  Patricia McConnell (who wrote The Other End of the Leash) has some materials about separation anxiety that you can order on www.dogwise.co m.  Also, adjustment time is also important.  If your dog is a rescue, he's probably got some issues with attachment to begin with.  Just give him time to learn to trust his environment.  I also agree with the crate suggestion...t hat will give him an environment that is consistently safe for him.
Good luck!!

Greetings!  I, too, am new to the board!  I have a female Pyr named Bo who is 1 1/2 years old.  She will be 2 in September.  We live in the Napa Valley, California.  I'd love to hear from other people in California who have Pyrs, as there seems to be very few of us out here!  I am looking forward to sharing and learning information from other Pyr parents!
Sincerely,
Jennifer & Bo
