Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: fumble's limping
« on: May 10, 2007, 08:50:56 pm »
We're thinking about you fumble, I hope his healing goes well,  I know he has a great loving support staff at home.

We got a couple of new kongs and stuff for Bava for after his surgery to keep him occupied as he recovered.

I hope he doesn't hurt too much today and is able to just get some rest.

We've also recently switched fully to Innova Evo for Bava and Sophie, I've notice improved energy already, something I didn't really expect.  It's too soon to really tell too much, but I think their coats may be a little better also.

I personally can't see why it would be a problem feeding a pup  Evo if the amount is watched.  And they will feel more full eating protein than if they ate grains, so I don't think that will be a big deal. Just my 2 cents.  Glad you finally found something that agrees with Bubba.. Yay!

Nina, however this turns out, just remember you have done far more than most people would for this poor fellow.

Bava is much more of a gentle soul than those two nuts.  He was inside holding down the floor.  Sophie has turned out to be an awesome awesome dog. She weighed 85 lbs this afternoon at PetSmart.  She is nearly as tall as Bava is now.  She's spunky as heck , but very soft also.  She sorta melts when you pet her... We are very lucky, to have such great pups, they make us proud every day.

That was great!   ;D

I really like the music in the background.  Do you know who it is?

Thanks, the music is called Elan, it's by Secret Garden.

It's an XJS - (A project I have not had much time for lately)
It has a tappet dropped and I need to pull the heads to rework it, which is no easy task on a 12cyl alum block.  Its pretty ghetto looking in the back yard though.. so just pretend you dont see it :)  We're obviously not slaves to yard-work either.. haha :)

Cheesy video of Mowglie & Sophie doing what they do - Tearing around the yard burning off some energy, and the double retrieve. I thought it was cute and figured I would share it.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: shock collar question
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:07:07 pm »
Forgot to mention, there are of course different methods in using it.  I wouldn't want to train a dog like some field dogs are trained, where they are shocked until the perform they action the trainer is looking for.

What we have been doing is avoidance training which is a quick blip as a distraction and not a steady shock until the dog performs what you want them to.. Not sure what that is called, I am sure there is a term for it.

We recently purchased one and I think it is a wonderful tool.  I use it on a setting lower than I have tried on myself.  I shocked myself on a higher setting for the full 10 seconds and it wasn't that big of a deal, it certainly didn't hurt.

As others have said the point isn't to hurt the pup , but to get their attention.  How that is any more cruel than some other kind of training collar I dont know.  I don't think anyone is recommending you jack it up to full power and hurt the poor dog.

Anyways.. It has proven it's worth for us in just a short amount of time.

Our problem has been with Sophie, she barks, counter surfs, steals the cats food, etc.  I love her to death, but she does try our patience at times. :)   It works great if you can catch them in the act, distract them with collar and divert their attention to something less undesirable.

I also use a hot-wire on the inside of our fence outside, and I know that hurts a lot more than a remote collar.  I have probably been shocked more times than the dogs.  But my dogs respect the fence and will not be the ones getting ran over.  Tough love I guess ;)

Mixed Breed Pictures / Re: Mowgli got a truck
« on: January 03, 2007, 07:18:21 am »
I actually bought the truck for him, to help with training him  .  I make him wait (which is tough for him) and then tell him he can go get it.  He is very very prey driven, and we've had problems with that instinct lately.

The bodies are real flimsy, and you can order additional bodies, but the parts underneath are tough, We've flipped it and ran into all sorts of stuff, and nothing broken yet.  I wish it were a little faster, Mowgli can catch up to it with no problem, he grabs the tires and throws it in the air and flips it, like it is some kind of prey.

What is kinda funny, is the our two Newfs will chase and bark at it , but they will NOT touch it, and they sure don't want it touching them.  Mowglie is just the opposite.. kill kill kill :)

Hahahaha.. I know that look soooo well , That is great!

Mowglie and I got a remote controlled truck for Christmas.  He loves killing the thing.  It doesn't stand a chance against the Mowg.  It's hillarious to watch and good exercise for him :)  Wish I had a picture of what the thing looks like now, it is rough, he has chewed it up big-time.
