Medical Conditions & Diseases / Bloating Boxer?
« on: May 01, 2006, 11:29:01 am »
I think I just witness my first time with Bloat.

I was at the Dog Park this evening.  A man just arrived with his young boxer.  As soon as he came into the park, his dog fell over.  I was at the top of the hill when this happened.  So I rushed over to see if I can tell what might be happening.  The dog was tightening up her stomach, gagging, and foaming.  I opened her mouth to see if there was any blockage (visable) ... didn't see any.

So I told the man to bring her immediately to the Emergency Vet.  I hope he made it on time.

Does that sound like Bloat to you?

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re: Frequent reader, new member
« on: April 30, 2006, 08:17:33 am »
After about 3 years of being dogless and lonely, I just had to get a new friend.

I only lasted 4 months being dogless.  I couldn't stand it.  I thought that NOT having a dog would be good.  I would be free-er.  I wouldn't have to run home right after work to de-poop the dog.

WRONG ...  4 months later, I became a first time Dane owner.

I have had him for over a year now and have increased my "herd" by one more Dane.

They are the best dogs in the world (in my opinion).  I can't imagine my life without my dogs.

Welcome to the Group.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Opinion on adoption
« on: April 30, 2006, 07:10:12 am »
That's a tough situation to be in.

Some times family does not stand in the same current as you do.  Some times you need to do for yourself what you truly believe is right and true.  Your family may climb aboard with you ...or they may not.

I am a birth mother to a 4 year old boy that I could not raise.  So I gave him up for adoption.  I feel blessed that there was a loving family to bring him in and treat him as their own flesh and blood.  Today he turned 4 years old.   I celebrate his birthday each and every year.

Do what you believe is right ... follow your own heart.
The boys need someone like you to raise them as if they are your own flesh and blood.

An adopted child or a child from your own groin is a gift from God.   Not all of us have the ability to nurture a gift like that.

God Bless You.

Sincerely,
Barbara

Isn't a male still fertile for a short time after being neutered?

Yes ... a "freshly" neutered male is even more potent than prior to his surgery.  Plus if he is a 1 year old,  his hormones are raging. I have a Great Dane that is a product of neutering the male first because it was cheaper.  The female then came in heat ... and what do you know, 9 puppies where born.  (This did not happen to me, I adopted one of the pups).

Your female is right at the edge of her first heat.

Get her fixed first (right away) before her heat.

Then you will need to keep them separated when you are not there to constantly supervise because he will try to mount her and can cause some internal damage.

Or better yet, if you can afford it, get them both fixed at the same time.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Good Bloat Article - Info
« on: April 24, 2006, 06:42:51 am »
Pretty good article on bloat here..
http://www.alllabs.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/labrador_article_of_month_april2004.htm?E+scstore

Really think this paragraph had some good info, it dispelled some ideas I had for lessening the chance of bloat.  I thought moistening the food was good.. wrong. Anyways some pretty interesting stuff there.
Quote
Several diet-related factors were associated with a higher incidence of bloat. These include feeding only dry food, or feeding a single large daily meal. Dogs fed dry foods containing fat among the first four ingredients had a 170 percent higher risk for developing bloat. Dogs fed dry foods that were moistened prior to feeding and that contained citric acid had a 320 percent higher risk for developing bloat. Conversely, feeding a dry food containing a rendered meat-and-bone meal decreased risk by 53 percent in comparison with the overall risk for the dogs in the study. Mixing table food or canned food into dry food also decreased the risk of bloat.

What are these folks credentials for this article?  The "facts" that they are stating as to what increases and what decreases the potential of BLOAT are in major contradiction to Great Dane experts.

The best source of information and prevention on Bloat is Linda Arndt, the Great Dane Lady.  Her website is http://www.greatdanelady.com

She is the leading expert in Great Dane nutrition and dietary needs and the majority of the Great Dane community, ei: breeders, show exhibitors, etc. rely on what she has publishes.

You might want to take some time in going through her site.

In addition to that, do an internet search on Bloat.  You will find many articles.  Most are pretty close to each other in regards to prevention issues.  Not one of them states what this article is stating.

I personally would go with the majority.

Sincerely,
Barbara

DH and I are leaving Sunday night for two weeks and I don't want to miss anything.  So get it all out in the next two and a half days....and then be quiet.  Go play with your dogs.  Be nice to your husbands and children.  But, for heaven's sake, STAY OFF THE COMPUTER!!!

I noticed that you didn't happen to mention WHERE you are going on vacation !!!!
Not that anyone would be jealous or anything like that.

Okay?  Do we all understand each other??!!!

You mean you're not taking your computer with you so that you can keep up with BPO?  That won't be much of a vacation if you don't have your computer with you.
