Great Dane Discussions / 1st night with Polar and Willow
« on: December 10, 2006, 11:47:13 pm »
We got in last night about 10pm.  Polar does awesome in the car.  My daughter brought out Willow on a leash and I had Polar and went met down the street.  They were very cute - wrestling with each other.  Willow likes him except when he steals her spot on the couch.  It has been wild, crazy dane wrestling - I hope they settle in soon.  My house will not be able to take much more.  lol it is like clash of the titans - knocking furniture over etc.  I did notice some food aggression from Polar.  He doesn't do it with me - I can stick my hand in his bowl when he is eating without a problem.  But Willow got close and he started growling.  Although he looks half starved and I know the breeder had other big danes - so I am not sure how much he actually got to eat.  I will be trying the Satin Ball recipe.  The poms -  I have just kept up in my bedroom.  I will introduce them this afternoon.  So far so good.  I will try to get some pictures today.  I am glad he is here - he is a sweet baby.

Great Dane Discussions / I got him!!!

Well, I picked up Polar this evening.  And I am glad I did.  He has been terribly neglected.  He is just skin and bones.  I can see his rib and hip bones.  He is skittish like he has been abused.  He was dirty and smelled like oils and gas.  He has scratches all over his face from the other dogs.  When we got into the hotel room - I turned on the TV and he freaked.  I don't ever think he has seen a TV.  But he is such a sweet baby - loves to cuddle and give kisses.  So he has had a bath and is sleeping on the bed...things are looking up for Polar.

Great Dane Discussions / Picking up Polar tomorrow
« on: December 07, 2006, 11:43:46 pm »
Well, I am up here in Portland and I will be picking up my new big baby tomorrow.  I am really excited!!!  Worried though because I have never had a deaf dog before.  It will be great to have him home.  I sure hope the other dogs feel the same way.  Willow is so spoiled I am not sure she wants to share the love.  Anyway, My daughter wants to change his name.  Here are the names on the table: Radar, Wolf Gang, Thorn, Van Gogh.  And other suggestions would be welcome.  I told my daughter that we could change his name every week as long as we keep the sign the same - he won't know.

I know I am jumping into this a little late but I have some experience with this as well.  Being potty trained is about the only thing a toddler can really control about their environment.  And IMO, the more you fight and get upset the worse it is going to be.  I know how frustrating it can be and how it is easy to lose control and act frustrated or angry with your kids, but this will cause the same reaction from them.  Maybe if you relax a bit - don'tmake a big deal out of it and see if eventually he will decide" you know being potty trained is not such a bad deal."  We used a potty chart with  my son with stars.  We had it in the bathroom and when he got 5 stars he got a prize.  My girlfriend went to the 99 cent store and got a box full of little toys and wrapped them up.  Everytime her daughter went pee she got one toy to unwrap and poop was 2 toys.  That worked pretty weel.. It is using positive reinforcment.  Much like training your dogs.  Toddlers are really good at know exactly what pushes your buttons and they they will keep pushing because they are testing their boundries.

I know - I can't keep up with the Pom's coats.  I don't know how you guys with the Hairy Big Paws can do it. :)  I am going to get it for the POms for sure.

Very cute - I can never get any of my dogs to sit for more then 1 sec.  And with the digital cameras ther is a delay from when you click the picture to when the picture is taken - my pictures all have the dogs in the process of leaving the area
