Sanity is my first all mine Dane but I did fostering and rescue and transport and all that before I got him.  Not to mention 8 years of research, but whatever.  Anyways, one day I was at Petsmart and I was taking him out of the back of my truck (Which, by the way has Dane rescue stickers on it, and "I'm a memeber of the GDCA" (Great Dane Club of America), so you think I would know my stuff right?  Well a lady is watching me and says "What is your dog mixed with?"  Because Sanity's a puppy I'm used to people thinking he's a Dane mix, so I say "Actually he's a full blood Dane puppy, he's just not finished growing yet."  The woman looks me right in the eye and says "Young lady (I HATE THAT), I KNOW Great Danes, I've had them for years, and that is NOT a great dane.  They don't even come in that color.  Someone lied to you."  I reassured her, that INDEED they come in this color, infact there's a show Dane that is so nice that she's got her championship and she's got this color (Technically the dark brindling is a mismark and as such is a fault.  The stripes should be even between fawn and black.  For those interested, here's a link to Stormi  http://www.ginnie.com/DaDane282.shtml )

The woman goes on to tell me that she knows all about Danes, and that her dogs are all over 200 pounds, one is even 275!  I said "Wow, they must be really fat then huh?"  "NO, all well bred Danes are supposed to be over 200 pounds."  Since only the most hefty Euros I know of are even close to that weight, I ask if they're imports.  She looks at me blankly.  OK then.....

Sanity is getting antsy right about now and starting to fidget and fuss.  She tells me that that means he has a bad temperment?  What?!?!?!  I decide to go inside, and as I walk away the woman yells after me that she's expecting her first litter in a few weeks if I wanted a real Dane.  Thanks but I'll pass.

PS, don't you *Love* the questions and stupid comments?  Best thing is, everyone thinks they're the first person to ask if you've got a saddle for that thing.

I didn't catch if someone already said this, as I just scanned the thread.  REAL pitbulls were animal aggressive, yes, but NEVER people agressive.  If they showed any vice towards tehir handlers they were destroyed.  These people would have to stick their hands into a mass of adrenaline filled, bloody dog to get their valuable animal.  If they were bred to be people agressive, do you think that anyone would be stupid enough to try it?

The thing is, a REAL pit is still prey aggressive, but NEVER EVER EVER people agressive.  The pits in the media today are simply dogs with bad temperments, bred thoughtlessly with no regards except for size.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Canidae dog food

You can get Canidae shipped to you.

http://www.waggintails.com/store/DisplayProduct.php?sku=CDDK-001

(Just type in Canidae Delivery in Google)

As for the Wolf King/Cub, some dogs have problems with alternative protein sources.  I've learned that there are several top quality dog foods out there but every dog responds differently to each one and it's a trial and error.  I've also heard that alot of dogs can't deal with Duck, and as such avoid those when I'm shopping.  Here are some other good food brands (I went to the food store today and Sanity and I started on Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken).

California Natural
Merrick
Innova
Timber Wolf
Wellness (But NOT if they're already having a problem with loose stools, says the brand rep)

Merrick and Timber Wolf have the prettiest packages.....  I looked at them for a LONG time.  But settled on the Eagle pack.  I've never heard of FROMM.....

You're referring to what I like to call "Puppy Uglies".  Danes get them alot because it seems only one body part grows at a time and it does it totally out of proportion to the rest of it's body.  Like their nose will start growing but not the rest of their head, or their butt will be almost as high as their ears.

As for the price requested by repuatable breeders, I have a link somewhere that has rough estimates of how much it costs to produce a high quality litter, but I just have to find it first.

I would have to agree with Tina to be VERY careful with GG.  I know of people who've gotten great dogs from them, but I also know of people who've gotten sick dogs that wre portrayed as healthy, and aggressive dogs that were played off as well tempered, with no help from the rescue afterwards.  A Dane is nothing to rush into so take your time.  Don't sign up with someone just because they'll give you a dog right away or because you saw them on TV and they looked good there.  Research research RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!!

Yay JEN!  I'm so glad you finally posted, and I just found out how much I'm getting for unemployment and we might be able to make it for the boys' Birthday anyways!  By the way, do you know which pup is Hunter in this pic?  I found Sanity and Timber alright.

Sanity was on and is on Canidae from the time I brought him home.  It's the only thing that put weight on him at all.  I didn't supplement him either.  If you're interested Solid Gold has an alternative protien food for Giant breeds now, Wolf King and it's made with Bison and Salmon

I bought a min pin puppy from a pet store once.  Mind you I don't like Min Pins and I know better than to get one from a petstore.  But I was looking, feeling sorry for the puppies, and these people came by to look at this dog.  They were going to make him live in their pick up as a Guard dog.  They went back for their check book or something and I couldn't stand to have him go to these people so I went up to the manager and told him that I'd give him an extra $200 if he sold the dog to me.  Of course he did, but then I had this dog I didn't want and didn't know what to do with it.  I ended up giving him to a friend and "Shady Business", Shady for short, is the most neurotic, emotionally deranged psychotic dog EVER!  He has a ton of health problems, his temperament sucks. and I show him to people all the time if they're thinking of looking at a pet store.

The thing that really bothers me is that I know that it's not because of money.  Yesterday we secured a million dollar deal where we deal directly with the customer, no general contractors involved.  What I THINK it is, is that the guy I was hired for is from another company that came over to make our company huge, which he is well on his way to doing.  Well his GF who does the job that I do, but at somewhere else, got fired and my placed decided to hire her to show me how to do things.  What I'm thinking happened is that they just decided to keep her and fire me.  I don't know that happened, it just seems logical and the only thing that means I didn't do something wrong.

I was a project administator for a Construction company.  Pretty much I cordinated materials and man power for jobs and kept track of them.  I live in Southern New Hampshire where there really isn't very much work right now.  Relocating isn't an option.

The biggest thing for me is with them not giving me a reason I keep thinking it's something I did.  That it's something I'm going to repeat in the future and it scares the crap out of me.  It's just so weird that it was out of no where.  When I think of all the times I went out to eat and like buying expensive toilet paper VS the sandpaper stuff it makes me ill.  I'll be leaving shortly to buy a newspaper and go through the want ads. :-\

Anything Non-Dog Related / I lost my job today.

I pull up to my work and I see one of the boss's trucks is there.  I think to myself, that's weird, he wasn't supposed to be in today.  I go inside, and he's standing there with an evelope.  He comes up to me and says "I have to give you this check" so I'm thinking it's something good.  Then he says "It's just not working out.  Nothing personal we just have to let you go."  What?  What did I do?  "You didn't do anything, we're not firing you, we're laying you off (Like ther's a difference).  It's nothing personal don't feel bad (Of course it isn't personal for you, you aren't the one losing your job)."  There was no warning, as far as I know things were going great.  When I left yesterday my other boss was giving me things to do for today.

I'm just floored, I feel like such a failure.  I can't go on my trip now because I don't have the money for it.  At least this happened before I spent all the money.  I don't know what I'm going to do.
