Newfoundland Pictures / Youtube Newfs
« on: July 26, 2006, 06:36:34 pm »
Has anybody seen this video on Youtube?  4 NEWFS!!!  A houseful of Newfs, and what a interesting house too.  And what's up with the music in the background??  I think this is from Europe, from the sound of the guys voice. The video is nothing special but the dogs are just so chill and remind me so much of Drake.  Essence of Newf.  Makes me want to get another Newf.

Today, July 14th 2006 is my 33rd birthday!!!  I'm at work and totally worthless.  Today is extra special because we are also going to find out the sex of our baby who is due on December 10th.  I can't wait to find out and let the bonding begin.  I don't care if it's a boy or girl, I just want them to be healthy.  After that, it's off to have a Sushi feast at one of San Francisco's premier sushi restaurant called Blowfish http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/889348

After that it's off to watch the SF Giants play Philly.  It's gonna be a great day!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Since so many of us here love to take pics of our doggies, I thought this might be worth sharing.  The American Humane Association and Bush's Baked Beans are putting on their annual Photo contest and if you submit and win one of the catagories, you will recieve a prize package worth $5000!  No too bad for just submitting a photo.  Here's a link to the contest page, GOOD LUCK!

I just heard the other day that in the UK they call German Shepards, Alsatians.  Is that correct?  Does that go for all of Europe or just the UK?  Is it like the Loo=Bathroom, Queue=Line, Lift=Elevator, Chips=Fries thing?  Why do Americans call them German Shepards?  Are they the exact same dog?  Can anybody explain this?  ???  Just curious.

After waiting and waiting, VIP Fibers finally spun Drake's fur and it arrived in today's mail.  I'M SO STOKED!!!  So now I have the fur, next I'm sending it to my friend in Fresno who Crochets all the time.  Hopefully, she is going to create me a masterpiece to cherish forever, something to keep for when Drake makes his trip over the Rainbow Bridge. (I don't even want to think about that day)  I can't wait for my hat!  To be continued.....

I attached some photos of what they sent me, I love the little seal they put on the packaging and the personalized Drake tag on the yarn.  Good stuff!!!

Newfoundland Pictures / Drake's Not-so-Newfie Tail
« on: May 31, 2006, 05:17:16 pm »
Hey all, thought this would be worth sharing.  Poor Drakey got some nasty hot spots on his tail and we had to take him to the vet.  Long story short, his tail had to be shaved so the sores could heal and this was the result.  It looks kind of like a French Poodle tail, but I like to call it his "Lion tail" so he doesn't get a complex.  I swear he is embarrassed by it.  Everybody laughs when they see him, POOR BUDDY!!! We just hope it grows back quickly.  I added the last picture from our Tahoe trip last weekend for a more majestic look of his tail, I don't think the beautiful scenery helps much, he still looks funny.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Puppies vs. Cat
« on: May 15, 2006, 11:32:28 pm »
This video is great!!!  I love the screaming cat, especially at the end.  Even if you don't think it's that good, who can resist a whole litter of curious, roly poly puppies?  Not me!

During this month at work, whenever I get stressed out or bored, I look up at my BPO calendar and see Bear's big fuzzy mug staring right back at me.  Cheers me up every time.  He looks so mellow, wise and happy all at the same time.  He's got the 1/4 tongue hang going too, LOVE IT!!!  Yogi does that alot too.  Can't wait to see Bear again one day and give him a big hug, plus, he and Drake need to play again.  ;D

Anything Non-Dog Related / Go do the things you never thought to do...
« on: April 18, 2006, 10:20:32 pm »
I know this is totally non-dog related but I thought it was worth sharing.  Last night my wife and I went to dinner in San Francisco.  We met my Mom there and set out to get to the restaurant.  Yesterday was the 100 year anniversary of the 1906 earthquake/fire that destroyed the city and in rememberance of that event, all public trasportation within city limits was free.  So for fun, we jumped on a Cable Car and took it to our restaurant.  It was one of those things we had never thought to do, it is sort of a "touristy" thing to do and not really practical.  IT WAS SO FUN!!!  What a neat way to get around, we hung on the side of the car and talked to the people riding with us and had a great experience.  It's kind of like living in the Napa Valley and never going wine tasting, or living in New York and never going to the Statue of Liberty or eating at the Carnegie Deli.  It was so fun and it gave us a glimpse of what public transportation was like back at the turn of the century.  If there's something in your area that you've always put off doing or experiencing because it seemed trivial or "touristy", go do it!  You may be surprised and have fun.  Just thought this was worth sharing, life is sweet and fleeting.  Enjoy the little things!

Last night, an acquaintance of ours brought a sweet little girl Newf over to our house.  It is a pretty sad story.  She came from what sounds like a total backyard breeder that was being very irresponsible and overbreeding her dogs.  I guess she had one 4 year old St. Bernard as well that had already had 4 litters.  Well this little girl Newf was the offspring of one of this "breeders" Newfs and they had to move and couldn't keep her.  She was given to a shelter and has been passed around several different foster families.  She had really bad cherry eyes and she finally got corrective surgery but I'm not sure one eye is completely corrected yet.  At 10 months old, she still hasn't had her heart and hips checked so I'm not sure of her status there.  She didn't really interact with Drake too much, but that's probably because she's so stressed out.  She is very sweet, but obviously a troubled dog.   Very needy and you can tell she wants someone who will give her the love she's never gotten.  It's like she knows exactly what's going on, probably because she been passed around so much.  She didn't even want to get in the car to leave our place, so sad.  We have thought about getting a rescue Newf and that's why we had our friend bring her to our house, but she is going to require more attention that we can give right now.  We're just being realistic and want to avoid a bad situation and this poor girl being passed over again.  Our friend is currently fostering her, but isn't sure she if she will keep her.  Can anybody help?  Please let me know because this dog really needs a loving family!!!  :( I have contacted the NCNC but I want to spread the word to as many people as possible.

I have a story to share which should serve as a warning to anybody who is planning to board their dog, especially if it's with a new kennel.  My cousin and his wife left for a trip to Canada and they had to board their Chihuahua at a kennel.  They checked it out ahead of time, it was clean and the people there seemed to be good people and animal lovers, so they boarded their precious baby there.  But midway through their trip, tragedy struck.  Their Chihuahua was in it's pen by itself and a Standard Poodle was in an adjoing pen.  The Poodle somehow managed to jump the tall fence between the pens and killed the Chihuahua.  Shook it and broke it's neck.  The kennel called my cousins parents and they had the fun task of calling my cousin and breaking the news.  They were absolutely devastated and cut their trip short.  Can you imagine the grief?  To make a long story short, the kennel claimed it wasn't their fault, my cousin had signed a waiver and they were going to charge him for boarding the dog and having to dispose of it's remains.  GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!  My cousin is a law student and my Uncle is a Superior Court Judge so you can imagine the kind of litigation they were going to slap this kennel with.  The kennel, with their tail between their legs, backed off and paid my cousin $600 for the cost of their dog.  So if you are going to board your dog, especially if it's with a new kennel, think about this tragedy and make sure they have secure pens and they separate dogs with different sizes and temperments.  I know this would be a different situation had their dog been a Newf or a Great Dane, but they can still be hurt badly by other dogs.  Hope you guys never have to deal with this. :-\

Newfoundland Discussions / A Chance BPO Newf Encounter
« on: April 06, 2006, 09:40:08 am »
I was driving to Napa with Drake yesterday and just as I was getting into town, I saw a woman walking a large, black dog down the street.  I thought, "That's gotta be a Newf", so I pulled over to say Hi.  I can't resist an opportunity to meet a Newf.  I pulled over onto the shoulder and rolled down the windows.  Drake stuck his big head out after he saw it was another Newf and the woman walked over to my car.  She suddenly said, "Hey I know you, aren't you Newf Lover on BPO?  And you must be Drake" :o  It turned out to be Locompmo, remember her?  She had that beautiful Newf, Dartagnan that unfortunately ate snail poison?  And she had the big girl Newf, Miss Otis?  She hasn't been on BPO for a while but I think she may come back soon. It was too cool to, just by chance, bump into someone who is a BPO-er.  She had a handsome Newf with her named Solomon who she is currently fostering and we had a nice conversation, right there on the side of the road.  I just thought I would share this with you all, it was a really cool, chance encounter and put a big smile on my face.  Locompmo, if you read this, let's stay in touch and do a Wine tasting tour of Napa with the boys this Summer.   ;D
