Hey Nor Cal folks, the Golden Gate Kennel Club is doing their annual dog show both days this weekend at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.  Sarah and I plan to go, probably on Sunday, and it would be great to meet up with some of you.  Can't wait to see all the Newfs!  Here is the link to the show:

Would any of you like to meet up there?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Drake vs. Galluping Horse
« on: January 23, 2006, 01:17:36 pm »
We had a bit of a scare the other day.  While walking down one of our favorite trails with Drake, a woman came flying up the trail on her horse in a full gallup(sp?).  As soon as Drake saw the horse flying up on us, he tucked tail and ran.  At first we laughed because we thought he might be playing, but we soon realized he was totally freaked out.  The woman did not slow down a bit as she approached us and then proceeded to chase Drake.  We were screaming for her to stop but she couldn't hear us.  Poor Drake was running faster than I have ever seen a Newf run.  We began to give chase but he was already off the trail, out in the Parking Lot and heading towards the road.  The woman on the horse finally stopped chasing him because a group of people were on the trail.  Sarah caught up with her and began to chew her out, she thought it was funny to chase a dog on her horse I guess.  Now we were freaking out because Drake had run out in the road where there are lots of blind corners and cars going way too fast.  Luckily he stopped and we found him on the side of the road, completely exhausted and freaked out.  POOR BUDDY!!!  We thought it was really irresponsible for the horse rider to have her horse in a full gallup on a public trail full of people, horses are so strong and someone could have gotten injured.  Fortunately it wasn't a tragic ending.  I know there aren't always a lot of places to exercise your horse, but on a public trail?  Hmmm...  What do you horse people think?

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Circus Animal Petition
« on: January 18, 2006, 01:11:48 pm »
I have just read and signed the petition: "End the use of animals in Ringling Bros. Circuses!"  This is an issue that really bothers me and as an animal lover I had to take part in helping out.  I thought you all would at least be interested in learning more about how to save these animals from a life of chains and mistreatment.

Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference.  We are trying to reach 20,000 signatures - please sign here:

Once you have signed, you can help even more by asking your friends and family
to sign as well.  There are also several other issues at the website below that might be of interest to you as well.

Newfoundland Pictures / Newf Kong
« on: January 16, 2006, 01:25:57 pm »
I went and saw King Kong last night and really enjoyed it.  I encourage anybody who hasn't seen it yet to go do so, gotta see it in the theater because it won't be the same at home.  Throughout the movie, I kept thinking about Drake.  Kong totally reminds me of a Newf!  I found some good online pics to compare, what do you think?

Anything Non-Dog Related / In Theaters Now...
« on: January 08, 2006, 07:34:28 pm »
What do you all think of the current movies out in theaters right now (1/6/06)?  I really want to go see Narnia soon because I read the book and I have heard lots of good things about it.  Is the animation believeable or just OK?  I have heard mixed reviews about King Kong but that might be worth watching, do the 3 hours go by fast?  Munich looks really good, but I don't know anybody who's seen it.  Is it as intense as the commercials make it out to be?  Brokeback Mountain...... ..  uh, I think I'll skip that one.  The hype for it right now is getting rediculous.  The most important movie in the last decade?  Oookaaay....

I saw Hostel last night and it was actually pretty good.  It's not a non-stop gorefest necessarily, but the gory scenes that are in it are pretty disturbing and intense.  There's actually some laughs in it as well, beautiful shots of the European countryside and a lot of tasteful, full frontal nudity.  Overall, I thought it was pretty good but it could wait for home viewing.  Fill me in folks or just share your reviews of any current movies.  ;)

Anything Non-Dog Related / The Holidays Destroyed Me!!!
« on: January 02, 2006, 01:15:00 pm »
It's Monday, January 3rd, 2006 AND I FEEL LIKE CRAPPOLA!!!  This holiday season was filled with lots of fatty, salty food, alcohol and very little sleep.  Although it was very fun and I really enjoyed spending time with family, it has taken it's toll.   Does anybody else feel this way?  Tired?  Screaming liver?  Larger midsection?  :P I am starting a 2 week cleanse today with my wife and my sister-in-law, it's a good thing.....

Great Dane Discussions / Danes on the Shoulders
« on: December 18, 2005, 06:53:27 pm »
I noticed something from all the pictures you Dane owners put up.  Do Danes like to jump up on you, or is it a Dane owner thing to pose with your dogs front paws up on your shoulders.  Almost everyone of you have taken a picture in that pose, I just wondered about that.  Drake isn't quite big enough to do that, but he likes to jump on us when were on the floor.  Somebody fill me in on this Dane phenomenon, or am I just trippin'?

Newfoundland Pictures / Happy Holidays From Drake
« on: December 18, 2005, 03:48:20 pm »
Sarah, Drake and I wish you all the best in the coming year and we hope you all have a happy, jolly and safe Holiday season.  It has been a fun year being involved with BPO and it has made Big Dog ownership that much better.  Thanks Guys, you're all good folks!

I wanted to show you all our Christmas Card, but it didn't scan well.  Below it, is the original picture.  We love it, even though Drake was being a brat and just wanted to go play.  ;D

Games & Jokes / HOT SEAT #8 - Mastiffmommy!!! Time to fess up, Marit!
« on: December 11, 2005, 07:30:30 pm »
OK, sorry I lagged on picking the Hot Seatee, I forgot the rules.  Time for Marit to answer some interesting and/or embarassing questions, this should be good....  ;D

What is your favorite part on your body and why?

If you had to give up one of your 5 senses, which would it be?

Do you think the Death Penalty is a fair punishment?

Do nice guys really finish last?

What is your biggest regret in life?

I got this email the other day and I thought it would be worth sharing.  I plan to adopt one as soon as I can.  This is why I am not a hunter, these kinds of things slip through the cracks.  Poor Wolves!  We need to help them.

I have sad news: the wolf killing has begun again in Alaska. I just received word that the first six wolves of the season have been killed in Alaska from the brutal practice of aerial gunning. Since Governor Murkowski and the Board of Game reinstated this awful practice, over 400 wolves have been killed. Easy targets against fallen snow, our majestic wolves and their young can now be gunned down from airplanes or chased to exhaustion and then shot from the ground.

This loss is so hard to bear, but please keep reading, because this year, there is hope for wolves.

In the past three weeks, I've written to update you on Care2's partnership with Defenders of Wildlife (named by Reader's Digest "America's Best Wildlife Charity") and our plans for the coming season's campaign to save Alaska's wolves and stop this brutal slaughter. Your response has been overwhelming. Many of you have adopted wolves for loved ones, and we've raised an incredible $75,000 to protect wolves! This funding is so critical to Defenders' ongoing efforts to end this aerial hunt once and for all.

Have you adopted a wolf this holiday season? Do you have family and friends on your holiday list who love wildlife as much as you do? The holidays are fast approaching, so now is the perfect time to make a truly meaningful gift by adopting a wolf for someone special in your life.

By making a tax deductible wolf gift adoption, you will help support Defenders of Wildlife's critical media, legal and grassroots efforts to end the aerial slaughter in Alaska and support all of Defenders' efforts to protect wolves across the country.

And when you adopt a wolf, Defenders will send your gift recipient a plush wolf toy and a personalized adoption certificate suitable for framing, shipped free in time for the holidays.

This year's aerial gunning of wolves could be the greatest wolf massacre since the 1950's. Defenders of Wildlife and their local conservation partners are using every means possible to stop the blood shed.

Let's help Defenders by adopting a wolf today.

I can't thank you enough for all that you've done to help protect wolves.

I get really excited when, purely by chance, I see other Newfies in public.  Yesterday, we were on a Birthday Party/Wine Tasting trip in Sonoma and as we were pulling into the first winery, there was a woman walking down the road with a HUGE Landseer Newf.  I just got really excited like I always do, I guess it's because the only Newfs I ever see are Drake and Yogi so when I see someone else's monster, it's kind of a shock.  WOW!  I think this is why I love Newfs so much, they never cease to amaze me.  Is anybody out there like that when they see other Newfs or Danes or Pyrs or Berners or whatever breed you own?  Or am I the only weirdo?  ???

Another sicko is exposed!  What is wrong with people?  This just makes me so FREAKING PISSED!!!  I love his reason for doing this as well.  There so many stupid people in the world....
